Enhancing the antenatal care quality through incentivized routine health information system in Northwestern Ethiopia: a quasi-experimental study (2020-2021).

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care (ANC) is essential for maternal and newborn health, yet its utilization and quality remain suboptimal in many low-income settings. Evidence on the effectiveness of non-financial incentives to improve ANC is limited. This study examined the effect of a performance-based non-financial incentive (PBNI) intervention on the quality and optimal utilization of ANC in northwestern Ethiopia. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pre-post study with a comparator group was conducted in 2020-2021 involving 1,927 women. The intervention provided non-financial incentives such as smartpho

Homicides among people with disabilities, United States, 2003-2022.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities (PwD) are at an increased risk of experiencing nonfatal violence; however, the risk of fatal violence victimization (i.e., homicide) among this population is less well established. METHODS: We used National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) data for homicide victims with disabilities for 2003 to 2022 in 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. NVDRS is a surveillance system that collects data on violent deaths, linking information from death certificates, coroner or medical examiner records, and law enforcement reports. NVDRS does not cur

PREVENTion and treatment of Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD) through optimising care: development and feasibility cluster randomised trial of the IAD-Manual (PREVENT-IAD).

BACKGROUND: Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is prevalent in long-term care (LTC) facilities and homecare settings amongst adults who are incontinent of urine and/or faeces. Strategies to protect skin integrity are needed. This study aimed to co-design and test the feasibility of a training manual and care guidance (IAD-Manual) to prevent and treat IAD in LTC facilities and homecare settings. METHODS: This was a three-phase study: (1) developing the intervention, (2) designing the empirical study (a cluster RCT with an embedded process evaluation) to assess its effectiveness (not repo

The fertility cascade: infertility prevalence, access to treatment, and successful live birth.

BACKGROUND: Access to fertility care in the United States is limited by availability of services, inadequate insurance coverage, restrictive legislation, and social determinants of health. Despite increasing demand for fertility services, national estimates of fertility care utilization and outcomes-particularly across sociodemographic groups-remain poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To quantify infertility awareness, treatment access, and live birth using a cascade of care framework, overall and by sociodemographic characteristics. STUDY DESIGN: We used a cascade of care framework to estimate

Trends and differences in cardiovascular disease and alzheimer's disease-related mortality among older adults in the United States, 1999 to 2023: A CDC WONDER database analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are leading causes of death in the United States and often co-occur, worsening outcomes. AD contributes to CVD mortality through shared risk factors, neurovascular dysfunction, and secondary complications such as immobility and dysautonomia. As global aging intensifies, mortality trends and disparities between these diseases remain poorly summarized. This study examines CVD- and AD-related mortality trends from 1999 to 2023 among U.S. adults aged 65 and older, by sex, race, and region. METHODS: The death certificates of ind

Trends and disparities in anencephaly-related early childhood mortality in the United States between 1999 and 2020: A nationwide CDC WONDER analysis.

Anencephaly is a severe neural tube defect that affects approximately 1 in every 5250 live births in the United States. This fatal congenital condition is linked to modifiable risk factors, including folic acid deficiency, maternal diabetes, and exposure to teratogenic medications such as certain anti-epileptics. Despite public health efforts to promote folic acid supplementation, disparities in mortality persist. This study aimed to evaluate national trends in anencephaly-related early childhood mortality from 1999 to 2020 using the CDC Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC

Stalled progress and emerging disparities in acute myocardial infarction mortality among U.S. older adults (> 65 Years) with renal failure, 1999-2023.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) experience disproportionately high mortality after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Contemporary national trends-and their variation across demographic and geographic strata remain poorly defined. METHODS: Using the CDC WONDER Multiple Cause-of-Death files, we identified U.S. decedents ≥ 65 years in whom ICD-10 codes for AMI and renal failure appeared anywhere on the death certificate between 1999 and 2023. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRS) per 100,000 population were standardized to the 2000 U.S. census. Joinpoint regression qua

Stroke incidence, mortality, subtypes in rural and urban populations in five geographic areas of India (2018-2019): results from the National Stroke Registry Programme.

BACKGROUND: Increasing stroke burden in India demands a long-term stroke surveillance framework. Earlier studies in India were urban-based, short term and provided limited data on stroke incidence and its outcomes. This gap is addressed by the establishment of five population-based stroke registries (PBSRs) of the National Stroke Registry Programme, India. This paper describes stroke incidence, mortality and age, sex, and subtypes distribution in the five PBSRs with urban and rural populations. METHODS: First-ever incident stroke patients in age group ≥18 years, resident for at least one year
