Multiple sclerosis in childhood: clinical and radiological features.

We analyzed the medical records and cerebral imaging of 30 children with early onset multiple sclerosis to compare the clinical and neuro-radiological features with acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis and adult multiple sclerosis. The female:male ratio was 1.3 before the age of 12 years and increased to 4.3 after age 12 years. Optic neuritis and pyramidal dysfunction were the most common presenting clinical features. The most common radiological features at first imaging were periventricular (77.2%), corpus callosal demyelination (63.6%), gadolinium enhancement (62.5%), and Dawson's fingers

Longitudinal associations between complex posttraumatic stress disorder and depressive symptoms: A four-wave study among de facto unattended children in China.

Complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) typically occurs following long-term, repeated trauma and involves two distinct symptom clusters: posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and disturbances in self-organization (DSO). CPTSD is widely comorbid with depression, but the mechanism of mutual influence at the within-person level remains unclear. De facto unattended children in China are children whose parents are deceased, missing, imprisoned, or severely disabled/chronically ill, or who have one such parent while the other is likewise unable to provide care, leaving them without effective g

Evaluation of foot biomechanics following surgical interventions, including SPOTT and SPLATT procedures in the management of equinovarus deformity in cerebral palsy hemiplegia.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of disorders affecting movement and posture and is the most common physical disability in children. Surgical interventions, such as split anterior and posterior tibial tendon transfers (SPLATT and SPOTT), can be necessary to correct foot and ankle deformities in CP. This is a retrospective pre-/post-operative cohort study that aims to specifically investigate effects on lower limb and foot biomechanics in children with CP. METHODS: Fifteen children aged 8-16 years at initial assessment (10 girls, 5 boys) underwent SPLATT and SPOTT procedures as part

Clinical presentations of macrodactyly in adults vs. children: a descriptive analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Macrodactyly of the hand is an uncommon anomaly. There are few studies looking at late presentation or adults with macrodactyly. This study specifically aims to describe the presentation and surgical management of adult macrodactyly and to compare these findings with those in children, highlighting the distinct challenges associated with late presentation. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 13 adults (18 years or older) and 19 children with macrodactyly of the upper limb who underwent surgery in a 13 year period. Clinical features including radiographic findings, number a

Prenatal Counseling and Diagnosis of COX20 Gene-Related Mitochondrial Complex IV Deficiency: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: COX20-related mitochondrial complex IV deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder that arises from biallelic loss-of-function mutations. Given the lack of specific treatments, affected children are at a heightened risk of disability. Consequently, prenatal counseling and prenatal diagnosis should be conducted to reduce the birth rate of children with such mitochondrial diseases. We report a case of COX20 gene associated mitochondrial complex IV deficiency in a child, and describe the prenatal counseling and prenatal diagnosis of the mother in subsequent pregnancies

Surgery and the first 8000 days of life: a review.

The first 8000 days of life, from birth to adulthood, encompasses critical phases that shape a child's health and development. While global health efforts have focused on the first 1000 days, the next 7000 days (ages 2-21) are equally vital, especially concerning the unmet burden of surgical conditions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Approximately 1.7 billion children globally lack access to essential surgical care, with LMICs accounting for 85% of these unmet needs. Common surgical conditions, including congenital anomalies, injuries, infections, and pediatric cancers, often go u

Exploring the support needs of Australian parents of young children with Usher syndrome: a qualitative thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in genetic testing have led to Usher syndrome now being diagnosed at a much earlier age than in the past, enabling the provision of early intervention and support to children and families. Despite these developments, anecdotal reports suggest there are substantial gaps in the services and supports provided to parents of children with Usher syndrome. The current study investigated the support needs of parents of children with Usher syndrome Type 1 when their child was aged 0 to 5 years. METHOD: Purposive sampling was used, and six semi-structured interviews were conduc

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Normocephalic Colombian Children with Antenatal Zika Virus Exposure at School Entry.

The long-term neurodevelopmental effects of antenatal Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure in children without congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) remain unclear, as few children have been examined to the age of school entry level. A total of 51 Colombian children with antenatal ZIKV exposure without CZS and 70 unexposed controls were evaluated at 4-5 years of age using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI-CAT), the Bracken School Readiness Assessment (BSRA), and the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC). Epidemiology of paediatric injuries in Nepal: evidence from emergency department injury surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Globally, injuries cause >5 million deaths annually and children and young people are particularly vulnerable. Injuries are the leading cause of death in people aged 5-24 years and a leading cause of disability. In most low-income and middle-income countries where the majority of global child injury burden occurs, systems for routinely collecting injury data are limited. METHODS: A new model of injury surveillance for use in emergency departments in Nepal was designed and piloted. Data from patients presenting with injuries were collected prospectively over 12 months and used to d

Failure to replicate a robust Down syndrome advantage for maternal well-being.

BACKGROUND: Family members caring for children with intellectual disability (ID) routinely report heightened levels of psychological distress. However, families of children with Down syndrome typically report better outcomes (known as the Down syndrome advantage). We examined whether the Down syndrome advantage would be present for maternal psychological distress, impact of caregiving, life satisfaction and perceived positive impact of the child with ID when controlling for external variables. METHODS: Mothers of children with Down syndrome (n = 111) and mothers of children with ID of mixed a

The prevalence of specific learning disorder in mathematics and comorbidity with other developmental disorders in primary school-age children.

Mathematics difficulties are common in both children and adults, and they can have a great impact on people's lives. A specific learning disorder in mathematics (SLDM or developmental dyscalculia) is a special case of persistent mathematics difficulties, where the problems with maths cannot be attributed to environmental factors, intellectual disability, or mental, neurological or physical disorders. The aim of the current study was to estimate the prevalence rate of SLDM, any gender differences in SLDM, and the most common comorbid conditions. The DSM-5 provides details regarding these only f

Perception of Families of Children with Specific Learning Disorder: An Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Parents have a tremendous influence on their children's academic and social success. Unfortunately, a majority of them do not have a concrete idea on how to assist their children, impacting negatively on both the parents and the child. Currently, there is sparse research on parents' experiences in dealing with children with specific learning disorders (SLD). The current study was planned to explore the perception of families of children with SLD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five focus group discussions (FGDs) including 30 parents of children with SLD aged between 8 and 14 years were ca

Usefulness of inflammatory biomarkers in discriminating between bacterial and aseptic meningitis in hospitalized children from a population with low vaccination coverage.

INTRODUCTION: Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae are the most frequent pathogens responsible for meningitis beyond the neonatal period. Aseptic meningitis is a disabling condition, but bacterial meningitis if left untreated is 100% fatal. The aim of the study was to analyze the usefulness of biochemical and hematological parameters in distinguishing between bacterial and non-bacterial meningitis in children with meningitis from a population with low rates of vaccination against S. pneumoniae and N. meningitidis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is a retrospective chart review
