A rare case liver hydatid cyst containing multiple calculi.

The hydatic cyst disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a potentially lethal, which can be found anywhere in the world, but especially in endemic areas such as the Mediterranean Basin, North Africa, Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Middle East. This parasite is mainly found in the liver (3/4 of the cases), being asymptomatic in most cases and discovered accidentally on a routine abdominal ultrasound or an ultrasound done for diagnosing other pathologies. Liver hydatid cyst threatment is multimodal, which includes medical, surgical, and interventional radiologic techniques. KEY WORDS: Co…

Complication of Hepatic Hydatid Cyst Surgery Presenting as Obstructive Jaundice.

The liver is the commonest organ affected by hydatid disease. We report a rare case of a 25-year-old female patient who was treated surgically for hepatic echinococcosis two weeks ago with laparoscopic excision of hepatic hydatid cyst with marsupialization and omentoplasty. She then presented with features of obstructive jaundice, which is a known complication following hydatid endocystectomy. Cholangiogram revealed a communication of the residual hydatid cyst with right segmental intrahepatic biliary radicals. She was treated with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)-guided s…

Expression of Tim-3/Galectin-9 pathway and CD8+T cells and related factors in patients with cystic echinococcosis.

OBJECTIVE: One of the primary reasons for the successful patriotization of Echinococcus multilocularis in patients is its ability to induce host immune tolerance. This study examined the expression of the immunosuppressive Tim-3/Galectin-9 pathway, CD8+T cells, and related factors in AE patients. The aim was to analyze the relationship between the Tim-3/Galectin-9 pathway and CD8+T cells in this disease and further understand the mechanism of immune tolerance induced by cystic echinococcosis. METHODS: Using flow cytometry, we evaluated the expression of CTL, CD8+CD28-T cells, CD8+CD28 + IFN-γ…

A massive primary hydatid splenic cyst was successfully managed through open total splenectomy: a case report and review article.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic infection that is caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. CE is very common, especially in the rural areas of developing countries. The most commonly affected organs by hydatid cysts are the liver and the lungs. However, the primary splenic hydatid cyst (PSHC) is a very rare manifestation of CE with an incidence of 0.5-8%. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old female patient presented with abdominal pain which gradually increased over months, along with anorexia and vomiting. Computerized tomography showed a massive splenic cystic mass.…

Giant Hydatid Cyst of the Liver Presenting With Severe Chest Pain and Deformity.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic disease caused by a larval stage (metacestode) of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus), which is still endemic in many countries worldwide, despite the efforts of the World Health Organization (WHO) to reduce the disease burden in those countries. The hydatid cysts of the liver tend to grow gradually over a long period of time and may cause a variety of symptoms, either related to compression of adjacent organs or rupture. Here we report an unusual case of a giant hydatid cyst of the liver presenting to the emergency room (ER) of our hospital with c…

A rare case of hydatid cyst-associated AA amyloidosis and literature review of hydatid cyst-associated nephropathy.

Hydatid disease is an infective picture caused by echinococcus, which progresses with cysts in various organs, especially in the liver. Renal involvement is an unusual location in the course of the disease. Although mostly asymptomatic renal cysts are seen, rarely glomerular or tubular associated nephropathy develops. In addition, the development of amyloidosis has been shown previously in patients with untreated chronic hydatid cysts. We wanted to bring a 27-year-old female patient with a 10-year history of hydatid cyst and AA amyloidosis to the literature. In addition, in our literature revi…

Hydatid Disease of the Liver.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis also known as hydatid disease is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by a tapeworm. It has a worldwide distribution. For long, it was thought to be a problem of the poorly sanitized "third world" and not given the importance it deserved. However, its occurrence in countries like Australia and New Zealand and recently in countries in Central Europe has meant that it is included in a WHO list of neglected diseases, has recently been the subject of extensive epidemiological studies, and has been the recipient of increased research funding. SUMMARY: The diagnosis is sti…

Intramuscular hydatid cyst of paraspinal muscle: A diagnostic challenge.

Hydatid cyst is a zoonosis caused by ingestion of eggs of Echinococcus-a tapeworm. Following ingestion of the eggs, oncosphere larvae are released which penetrate the intestinal wall to invade various organs of the body including liver, lungs, and skeletal muscles via. blood vessels. Due to their contractile nature and high lactic acid content, skeletal muscles are typically not a suitable site for attachment of hydatid cyst. In our case report presented below, we report a rare case of an isolated hydatid cyst of paraspinal muscle presenting as a slow-growing asymptomatic mass in the back, pos…

Echinococcal Disease of the Fallopian Tube as a Rare Cause of Primary Subfertility.

Echinococcosis is a significant zoonotic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus, which has a worldwide distribution. In India, the annual incidence varies from one to 200 in 100,000 people. The liver and lungs are often affected, making diagnosis difficult when infections occur in uncommon areas. We report a case of a hydatid cyst in the fallopian tube, which presented as subfertility and was confirmed by radiological imaging.

Effects of protoscoleces excretory-secretory products of Echinococcus granulosus on hepatocyte growth, function, and glucose metabolism.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most widespread and harmful zoonotic parasitic diseases, which most commonly affects the liver. In this study, we characterized multiple changes in mouse hepatocytes following treatment with excretory-secretory products (ESPs) of Echinococcus granulosus protoscoleces (Eg-PSCs) by a factorial experiment. The cell counting kit-8 assay (CCK-8), the 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) assay, and flow cytometry were used to detect the growth of hepatocytes. Inverted microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were u…

miRNA based biomarkers for the early diagnosis of Echinococcus granulosus in experimentally infected dogs.

Cystic echinococcosis, which is caused by the Echinococcus granulosus. Carnivores, as final hosts, contain adult tapeworms in the small intestine, and a variety of mammals, including humans, harbor the metacestod. This study was designed to investigate the miRNA-based biomarkers for early and accurate diagnosis of E. granulosus in experimentally infected dogs. A liver with an obvious hydatid cyst was obtained from a slaughterhouse and then protoscoleces were collected. Following, viable protoscoleces were administred to three experimental dogs (ED1, ED2 and ED3) and another uninfected control …

Surgical techniques/case videos-complex aortic case: top tips (TAAAR).

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most common orthopedic injuries. While Hamstring Tendon (HT) autograft reconstructions have been the most frequent graft type over the last decade, quadriceps tendon (QT) autografts have become increasingly popular in the past 2 years. The procedure of vancomycin graft soaking has become the state-of-the-art in many institutions as it avoids septic knee arthritis after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). In the present study, we analyzed all patients presenting with an ACL rupture who subsequently underwent pri
