Hearing Aid Amplification Improves Postural Control for Older Adults With Hearing Loss When Other Sensory Cues Are Impoverished.

Recent studies suggest that sound amplification via hearing aids can improve postural control in adults with hearing impairments. Unfortunately, only a few studies used well-defined posturography measures to assess balance in adults with hearing loss with and without their hearing aids. Of these, only two examined postural control specifically in the elderly with hearing loss. The present study examined the impact of hearing aid use on postural control during various sensory perturbations in older adults with age-related hearing loss. Thirty individuals with age-related hearing impairments and

Evaluation of a Fast Method to Measure High-Frequency Audiometry Based on Bayesian Learning.

This study aimed to assess the validity of a high-frequency audiometry tool based on Bayesian learning to provide a reliable, repeatable, automatic, and fast test to clinics. The study involved 85 people (138 ears) who had their high-frequency thresholds measured with three tests: standard audiometry (SA), alternative forced choice (AFC)-based algorithm, and Bayesian active (BA) learning-based algorithm. The results showed median differences within ±5 dB up to 10 kHz when comparing the BA with the other two tests, and median differences within ±10 dB at higher frequencies. The variability incr

Congenital hearing loss: introduction of the R67 large gene panel in England.

BACKGROUND: Congenital hearing loss is a chronic condition which occurs worldwide. In the past, investigations focused on testing the most common genes associated with hearing loss (such as Connexin 26-related hearing loss). Targeted testing of specific genes was requested only when a particular syndrome was suspected. Recent advances have led to the development of a large gene panel which utilises next-generation sequencing to simultaneously test for pathogenic variants in many genes associated with hearing loss. AIM: This review article aims to highlight the changes in the approach to conge

Contribution of Tinnitus and Hearing Loss to Depression: NHANES Population Study.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss affects the emotional well-being of adults and is sometimes associated with clinical depression. Chronic tinnitus is highly comorbid with hearing loss and separately linked with depression. In this article, the authors investigated the combined effects of hearing loss and tinnitus on depression in the presence of other moderating influences such as demographic, lifestyle, and health factors. DESIGN: The authors used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (2011-2012 and 2015-2016) to determine the effects of hearing loss and tinnitus on depression in

Potential overestimation of cognitive impairment because of hearing loss: impact of test modalities on cognitive test scores.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing impairment in older adults may affect cognitive function and increase the risk of dementia. Most cognitive tests are delivered auditorily, and individuals with hearing loss may fail to hear verbal instructions. Greater listening difficulty and fatigue in acoustic conditions may impact test performance. This study aimed to examine the effect of decreased audibility on cognitive screening test performance in older adults. METHOD: Older adults (n = 63) with different levels of hearing loss completed a standard auditory Mini-Mental State Examination test and a written version o

Fitting a Hearing Aid on the Better Ear, Worse Ear, or Both: Associations of Hearing-aid Fitting Laterality with Outcomes in a Large Sample of US Veterans.

Longitudinal electronic health records from a large sample of new hearing-aid (HA) recipients in the US Veterans Affairs healthcare system were used to evaluate associations of fitting laterality with long-term HA use persistence as measured by battery order records, as well as with short-term HA use and satisfaction as assessed using the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA), completed within 180 days of HA fitting. The large size of our dataset allowed us to address two aspects of fitting laterality that have not received much attention, namely the degree of hearing asymm

Preliminary Guidelines for Replacing Word-Recognition in Quiet With Speech in Noise Assessment in the Routine Audiologic Test Battery.

OBJECTIVES: For decades, monosyllabic word-recognition in quiet (WRQ) has been the default test of speech recognition in routine audiologic assessment. The continued use of WRQ scores is noteworthy in part because difficulties understanding speech in noise (SIN) is perhaps the most common complaint of individuals with hearing loss. The easiest way to integrate SIN measures into routine clinical practice would be for SIN to replace WRQ assessment as the primary test of speech perception. To facilitate this goal, we predicted classifications of WRQ scores from the QuickSIN signal to noise ratio

[Organoids-the key to novel therapies for the inner ear? German version].

The sensitivity and the complexity of the human inner ear in conjunction with the lack of regenerative capacity are the main reasons for hearing loss and tinnitus. Progress in the development of protective and regenerative therapies for the inner ear often failed in the past not least due to the fact that no suitable model systems for cell biological and pharmacological in vitro studies were available. A novel technology for creating "mini-organs", so-called organoids, could solve this problem and has now also reached inner ear research. It makes it possible to produce inner ear organoids from

Cognitive control in age-related hearing loss: A narrative review.

Recent evidence suggests links between hearing loss and cognitive impairment in older adults with peripheral age-related hearing loss (ARHL). Earliest cognitive changes have been observed in cognitive control; however, a cohesive account of cognitive control alterations in older adults with peripheral ARHL is lacking. Cognitive control refers to cognitive processes that manage and regulate one's behavior to achieve desired goals. This review summarizes behavioral evidence on alterations in three cognitive control processes, including cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, and working memor

Teaching Children With Hearing Loss to Recognize Speech: Gains Made With Computer-Based Auditory and/or Speechreading Training.

OBJECTIVES: Transfer appropriate processing (TAP) refers to a general finding that training gains are maximized when training and testing are conducted under the same conditions. The present study tested the extent to which TAP applies to speech perception training in children with hearing loss. Specifically, we assessed the benefits of computer-based speech perception training games for enhancing children's speech recognition by comparing three training groups: auditory training (AT), audiovisual training (AVT), and a combination of these two (AT/AVT). We also determined whether talker-specif
