The relationship between major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) remains controversial. Previous research has reported differences and similarities in risk factors for MDD and BD, such as predisposing personality traits. For example, high neuroticism is related to both disorders, whereas openness to experience is specific for BD. This study examined the genetic association between personality and MDD and BD by applying polygenic scores for neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness to both disorders. Polygenic scores reflect the wei…

BACKGROUND: Substantial uncertainty exists about prevalence of mood disorders in patients with cancer, including those in oncological, haematological, and palliative-care settings. We aimed to quantitatively summarise the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and adjustments disorders in these settings.
METHODS: We searched Medline, PsycINFO, Embase, and Web of Knowledge for studies that examined well-defined depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorder in adults with cancer in oncological, haematological, and palliative-care settings. We restricted studies to those using psychiatric interviews.

Specific changes of bioelectrical brain activity was found in 27 patients with different level of posttraumatic consciousness depression by the methods of crosscorrelation, coherence and factor analysis of EEG. The changes of activity of morphofunctional systems of intracerebral integrations were revealed partially by decreasing of unspecific activity from brainstem structures reflected with increasing of slow wave activity and decreasing of EEG coherence in alpha- and beta-range. Depression of system organization of interconnections of bioelectrical brain activity in frontal and occipital reg

Simultaneous coexistence of anxiety with depressive disorders is probably one of the major current problems in Medicine. The pharmacological approach for Panic Disorder and Major Depression includes "high-powered" benzodiazepines for the rapid, but transitory relief of same symptoms and especially antidepressant compounds. Recently physical-instrumental approaches have been tested for the treatment of these complex diseases, like Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES), Trans-cranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and Radio Electric Asymmetric Treatment (REAC). The REAC apparatus was designed to…

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of Haitian immigrant and refugee youth have emphasized "externalizing" behaviors, such as substance use, high risk sexual behavior, and delinquency, with very little information available on "internalizing" symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. Analyzing stressors and "internalizing" symptoms offers a more balanced picture of the type of social and mental health services that may be needed for this population. The present study aims to: 1) estimate the prevalence of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Haitian immigrant students; and 2) ex

BACKGROUND: Previous theory and research suggest links between substance use and externalizing behavior problems, but links between substance use and internalizing problems are less clear. The present study sought to understand concurrent links among diagnoses of substance use disorders, internalizing disorders, and behavior disorders at age 18 as well as developmental trajectories of illicit substance use prior to and after this point.
METHODS: Using data from 585 participants in the Child Development Project, this study examined comorbidity among substance use, behavior, and internalizing d

This study examined the relationships between behavioural inhibition (BI), anxiety disorders, depression and CD4 counts in 456 HIV-infected adults attending primary healthcare HIV clinics in South Africa. Our first hypothesis was that BI would be positively correlated with anxiety disorders and with depression. Our second hypothesis was that BI, anxiety disorders and depression would be negatively correlated with CD4 counts. Participants completed the Retrospective Self-Report of Childhood Inhibition scale (RSRCI), the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES-D) and the Mini-Inte

OBJECTIVES: Evidence in the literature suggests stress-related changes of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in mobbing. We investigated the association between HPA activity and psychological profiles in mobbing, using a multidisciplinary approach.
DESIGN: Forty-eight victims of mobbing were evaluated by a working group of the Departments of Occupational Medicine, Psychiatry and Internal Medicine. After an informed consent, a detailed occupational history, a psychiatric interview with Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2) administration and a blood sample (8:00 AM) for

OBJECTIVE: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is frequently associated with mood disorder. However, it is typically difficult to distinguish between disturbed mood as a causal agent and disturbed mood as a consequence of the experience of IBS. This report considers the association between mood and symptom severity in a patient with diarrhea-predominant IBS and stable, rapid cycling bipolar disorder with a predominantly depressive course. Such a case provides an important opportunity to determine the direction of the relationship between mood and IBS symptom severity because the fluctuations of moo

BACKGROUND: Antidepressant-induced periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) may limit the tolerability of some antidepressant medications and interfere with treatment response. Given the role of dopamine in PLMD and the effects of bupropion sustained-release (SR) on central dopaminergic function, we hypothesized that bupropion SR would not be associated with antidepressant-induced PLMD.
METHOD: In an expanded case-series design, we compared the effects of bupropion SR, after about 10 weeks of treatment, on measures of PLMD, depression, and sleep in 5 depressed (Research Diagnostic Criteria) pat

Much of the scientific literature on affective states in primary care settings is derived from instrument-based diagnoses, typically without the benefit of clinical in-depth examination. In a naturalistic family practice setting, we prospectively evaluated 108 consecutive anxious and/or depressed patients. All diagnoses derived from semistructured interviews conducted by a family physician with enhanced training in mood disorders. Nonbipolar depressions were found in 60 of 108 patients (55.6%), nearly half of whom were in the depression not otherwise specified (DNOS) category; yet on careful h

This study investigated sleep EEG during placebo and after cholinergic stimulation with RS 86 in 36 healthy subjects, 34 patients with major depression and 20 patients with anxiety disorders. Cholinergic stimulation with RS 86 led to a decrease of slow wave sleep and REM latency. RS 86 had a more profound impact on REM latency in patients with major depression than in healthy controls and patients with anxiety disorders. Six out of 36 healthy controls, three out of 20 patients with anxiety disorders and 24 of 34 patients with depression displayed sleep onset REM periods after cholinergic stimu

PURPOSE: Major depressive disorder with acute suicidal ideation or behavior (MDSI) is a substantial humanistic, economic, and clinical burden on patients. Data on health care resource use (HRU) and costs among patients with MDSI initiated on esketamine nasal spray relative to traditional treatments are limited. This study sought to describe HRU and medical costs of patients with MDSI initiated on esketamine, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), antidepressant with second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) augmentation, and antidepressant monotherapy in the United States.
METHODS: Adults with MDSI fro…

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is among the most common psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. While previous meta-analyses have synthesised evidence on the efficacy and acceptability of newer-generation antidepressants in this population, specific adverse events (AEs) remain poorly characterised. This is of high clinical importance, as AEs are burdensome for patients, can reduce treatment adherence and lead to discontinuation. Here, we present a protocol for a network meta-analysis designed to evaluate the specific AE profile and comparative tolerability of newer-ge…

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) co-occurs with major depressive disorder (MDD) in approximately 50% of cases, and this comorbidity is associated with greater severity of depressive symptoms, sleep disturbances and poorer clinical outcomes. Although continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is effective in treating OSAS and alleviating symptoms of MDD, poor adherence during the initial weeks of treatment remains a major clinical challenge. Bright light therapy has been shown to rapidly improve sleep, wakefulness, cognitive function and mood in patients with MDD. …

AIMS: Caused by multiple risk factors, heavy burden of major depressive disorder (MDD) poses serious challenges to public health worldwide over the past 30 years. Yet the burden and attributable risk factors of MDD were not systematically known. We aimed to reveal the long-term spatio-temporal trends in the burden and attributable risk factors of MDD at global, regional and national levels during 1990-2019.
METHODS: We obtained MDD and attributable risk factors data from Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We used joinpoint regression model to assess the temporal trend in MDD burden, and age…
