Lactose maldigestion is not an impediment to the intake of 1500 mg calcium daily as dairy products.

BACKGROUND: A National Institutes of Health consensus conference concluded that a daily calcium intake of 1500 mg reduces the severity of osteoporosis. Because dairy products are the main natural source of dietary calcium, a diet providing 1500 mg Ca must contain large quantities of dairy products. However, it is widely believed that the lactose content of these products will not be tolerated by persons with lactose maldigestion (approximately 30% of the adult US population). OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the symptoms of lactose maldigestion and digestion when the diet was supplemented with dairy p

Effect of ethanol and cocaine treatment of the immune system of v-Ha-ras-transgenic mice.

The objective was to investigate if the presence of the v-Ha-ras oncogene could induce immune changes different to the ones observed in normal mice. Therefore, we decided to use Oncomice, the transgenic mice with an activated v-Ha-ras oncogene under the control of the mouse mammary tumor virus-promoter, and their normal inbred counterparts, FVB mice. Both strains of mice were fed the Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet with ethanol or the isocaloric control diet and were injected daily with cocaine or saline. The percentage and absolute number of T and B lymphocytes in the spleen and thymus were determ

Effect of oat gum on the physical properties of the gastrointestinal contents and on the uptake of D-galactose and cholesterol by rat small intestine in vitro.

Recent reports indicate that oats have a relatively low glycaemic effect in comparison with other carbohydrate food, and that their consumption leads to a reduction in plasma-cholesterol levels in man. These properties may be due to a soluble non-starch polysaccharide in oats. The present study was undertaken to explore the physiological properties of this material. Three groups of male Wistar rats were meal-fed on a control diet free of soluble dietary fibre for 10 d before being given a 10 g meal of either the control diet, a diet containing oat gum (beta-glucan), or finely ground rolled oat

Prenatal ethanol exposure decreases hippocampal mossy fiber zinc in 45-day-old rats.

The long-term consequences of prenatal ethanol exposure on histochemically detectable hippocampal mossy fiber zinc was examined using a recently developed quantitative histofluorescence procedure. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were maintained throughout gestation on one of three dietary regimens: (a) a liquid diet containing either 3.35% ethanol, (b) an isocalorically matched liquid diet pair-fed to the 3.35% ethanol group, or (c) lab chow ad libitum. At 45 days of age, offspring from each of the three diet groups were sacrificed for determination of hippocampal mossy fiber zinc and zinc analys

Nutritional contributors to cardiovascular disease in the elderly.

Cardiovascular disease, so common in the elderly, has become an urgent public health concern. Major contributing factors include hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose tolerance, physical indolence, and cigarette smoking. Diet plays a major role in atherogenesis by its influence in blood lipids, blood pressure, and glucose tolerance, although its impact in the elderly is speculative owing to a paucity of direct evidence. But a rationale exists. Most cardiovascular risk factors are more prevalent in the elderly than in the young adult. The rise in blood pressure and blood lipids with adva

Impact of a High-Fiber, Fruitless Diet on the Gut Microbiome, and Health of Captive Orangutans.

Diet is a crucial factor in modulating the gut microbiome, and understanding these interactions in captive primates is essential for their health and welfare. This study assessed the impact of the transition to a high-fiber, low-sugar diet on the gut microbiome, behavior, and physical health of five captive Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus). We hypothesized that altering dietary patterns would significantly influence gut microbiome diversity and composition, as well as behavioral and physiological indicators. Over 12 weeks, the orangutans were gradually transitioned from a fruit-rich diet to

Personalizing nutrition therapy in inflammatory bowel disease: Practical applications and review of the latest studies.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a chronic condition influenced by genetic and environmental factors, including diet. Dietary interventions modulate IBD pathophysiology through microbiome reshaping, short-chain fatty acid production, and immune regulation. While pharmacologic therapies remain central, dietary interventions have emerged as evidence-based adjunctive strategies for inducing and maintaining remission. In UC, the Mediterranean diet (MED) demonstrates consistent improvements in clinical symptoms and inflammatory mark

The impact of junk food on male fertility in mice: therapeutic interventions targeting advanced glycation end-products and oxidative stress.

Frequent consumption of poor-quality diets "junk food" leads to the accumulation of sugar-derived advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), promoting inflammation and oxidative stress (i.e., diminished endogenous antioxidant defenses). This biology has been linked to reduced male fertility, but it is unclear whether reversing AGE damage or boosting antioxidant defenses can restore reproductive function. We used a mouse model to test two approaches: Alagebrium (ALT-711), an investigational drug which breaks AGE cross-links, and Fertilix®, an antioxidant micronutrient blend. Sixty-eight male C57BL

Taste receptor downregulation in diet-induced obesity reveals circumvallate papillae-specific taste-inflammatory networks.

INTRODUCTION: Beyond their role in chemosensory perception, taste receptors function as metabolic regulators extra-orally. While decreased taste receptor expression in gustatory tissue is linked to obesity-associated inflammation, we tested the hypothesis that taste receptor-inflammation interactions extend to extra-oral contexts. METHODS: Obesity-associated metabolic syndrome-like phenotype was induced in female C57BL/6 mice by administration of a cafeteria diet for 18 weeks. The controls consumed a standard diet. Gene-expression levels of Tas1r2, Tas1r3, CD36, Ffar1, GPR84 and Ffar4 were an

Ameliorating Effect of Bifidobacterium breve CM02-09T on High-Fat Diet-Induced Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Mice.

Evidences have demonstrated that the regulation of gut microbiota by probiotics can be utilized to prevent nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); Bifidobacterium was widely used as a potential therapeutic alternative for metabolic diseases. In this study, the probiotic functions of Bifidobacterium breve CM02-09T and its effects on NAFLD were investigated through genome annotation and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model. The genome of B. breve CM02-09T consists of a single circular chromosome of 2 372 890 bp. Eighteen male C57BL/6J mice were fed a normal chow diet (NCD), a high-fat diet,

Ketogenic Diets Alter the Gut Microbiome, Resulting in Decreased Susceptibility to and Cognitive Impairment in Rats with Pilocarpine-Induced Status Epilepticus.

A ketogenic diet (KD) is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, and low-protein diet that exerts antiepileptic effects by attenuating spontaneous recurrent seizures, ameliorating learning and memory impairments, and modulating the gut microbiota composition. However, the role of the gut microbiome in the antiepileptic effects of a KD on temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) induced by lithium-pilocarpine in adult rats is still unknown. Our study provides evidence demonstrating that a KD effectively mitigates seizure behavior and reduces acute-phase epileptic brain activity and that KD treatment alleviates hippo

Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise enhanced dopamine signaling in diet-induced obese female mice without preventing body weight gain.

Obesity continues to rise in prevalence and financial burden despite strong evidence linking it to an increased risk of developing several chronic diseases. Dopamine response and receptor density are shown to decrease under conditions of obesity. However, it is unclear if this could be a potential mechanism for treatment without drugs that have a potential for abuse. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether moderate-intensity exercise could reduce body weight gain and the associated decreases in dopamine signaling observed with high-fat diet-induced adiposity. We hypothesize

Taurine amino acid supplementation impacts performance, blood hematology, oxidative stress, and jejunum morphology in broiler chickens.

Excess levels of free radicals cause oxidative damage to cells. Taurine is a rare amino acid with antioxidant effects whose dietary deficiency increases oxidative damage to the cell membrane. To investigate the effects of dietary taurine supplementation on performance, blood hematology, oxidative stress, and jejunum morphology in broilers, 300 broilers (Ras 308, 1D of age) were randomly allocated into 4 groups with 5 replicates of 15 birds. The experimental treatments included basic diet (control treatment) and basic diet with 1, 3, and 6 g/kg taurine amino acid. During 1 to 45 days, the inclu
