A retrospective multicenter study of carbon-ion radiotherapy for external auditory canal and middle ear carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study to assess the clinical outcomes of carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) for head and neck malignancies (Japan Carbon-Ion Radiation Oncology Study Group [J-CROS] study: 1402 HN). We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CIRT in patients with external auditory canal (EAC) and middle ear (ME) carcinomas. METHODS: Thirty-one patients treated with CIRT at four Japanese institutions were analyzed. Fourteen patients (45.2%) had squamous cell carcinomas, 13 (41.9%) had adenoid cystic carcinomas, and four (12.9%) had other types. Nineteen (61…

Modulation of the dichotic right ear advantage during bilateral but not unilateral transcranial random noise stimulation.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) has been increasingly adopted to modulate perceptual and cognitive functions, but the effects on auditory perception are still relatively uncharted. Starting from the evidence that a stronger right ear advantage effect (REA) in dichotic listening positively correlates with speech sound processing, the present study was aimed at modulating the REA by means of high-frequency transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (hf-tRNS). Stimulation was applied over the auditory cortex (AC) either unilaterally (Experiment 1, N = 50) or bilaterally (Experiment 2, N = 24…

Use of In Vivo Imaging System Technology in Leishmania major BALB/c Mouse Ear Infection Studies.

Novel treatments for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) are needed, due to current lack of effective universal treatments, increasing resistance among the parasite, and toxic effects or impracticality of the current therapeutics. Models of direct infection with high number of Leishmania parasites in the current research of CL involving the BALB/c mouse or Golden Syrian Hamster are considered not suitable for the assessment of antileishmanial drug efficacy because of the lack of disease similarities with humans. The saliva of the sand fly vector is known to affect the host response to infection by th…

Human middle-ear muscles rarely contract in anticipation of acoustic impulses: Implications for hearing risk assessments.

The current study addressed the existence of an anticipatory middle-ear muscle contraction (MEMC) as a protective mechanism found in recent damage-risk criteria for impulse noise exposure. Specifically, the experiments reported here tested instances when an exposed individual was aware of and could anticipate the arrival of an acoustic impulse. In order to detect MEMCs in human subjects, a laser-Doppler vibrometer (LDV) was used to measure tympanic membrane (TM) motion in response to a probe tone. Here we directly measured the time course and relative magnitude changes of TM velocity in respon…

Decellularization of the Porcine Ear Generates a Biocompatible, Nonimmunogenic Extracellular Matrix Platform for Face Subunit Bioengineering.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess whether perfusion-decellularization technology could be applied to facial grafts. BACKGROUND: Facial allotransplantation remains an experimental procedure. Regenerative medicine techniques allow fabrication of transplantable organs from an individual's own cells, which are seeded into extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffolds from animal or human organs. Therefore, we hypothesized that ECM scaffolds also can be created from facial subunits. We explored the use of the porcine ear as a clinically relevant face subunit model to develop regenerative m…

Do combined otoplasty techniques really improve the surgical outcomes for prominent ear correction in adult patients?

OBJECTIVE: Prominent Ear is a genetic malformation of the human ear. It occurs due to malformation of cartilage during primitive ear development in intrauterine life. Multiple surgical techniques for the correction of protruding ears have been described which include: incisions, sutures, and cartilage scoring, isolated or in combination. To date, no ideal method that fulfills the aim of a complete surgical resolution has been described in adult patients. The aim of our study is to discuss the main surgical technique' described in order to identify technical association to obtain optimal surgic…

A Case of Contrast Enhanced Cystic Mass of External Ear Canal Diagnosed as Engorged Hard Tick.

A 58-year-old female complained earfullness and otalgia and came to the clinic. Dark gray colored cystic mass obstructing the left ear canal was observed during the endoscopic exam. Contrast enhanced CT image showed an oval shape soft tissue lesion in the mid part of the external auditory canal with a homogenous increased contrast uptake. The mass was removed under microscopic view at outpatient clinic. While dissecting the mass in the ear canal, a pod like structure was visualized. The external organism was densely adherent to the skin and turned out to be an engorged hard tick. Considering t…

Silver Sulfadiazine Retards Wound Healing and Increases Hypertrophic Scarring in a Rabbit Ear Excisional Wound Model.

This study evaluated the effects of topical use of silver sulfadiazine cream (SSD) on wound healing and subsequent scarring in a rabbit ear wound model. Seven millimeter full-thickness excisional wounds were created in rabbit ears. Twenty-four rabbits were randomized into four groups in which each group received base cream, 0.01% SSD, 0.1% SSD, or 1% SSD, respectively. Each treatment was applied at 2-day intervals from postoperative days (PODs) 2 to 14. At POD 7, half of the rabbits from each group were killed and tissues were harvested to measure wound healing parameters that included epithel…

Microbiological Profile From Middle Ear And Nasopharynx In Patients Suffering From Chronic Active Mucosal Otitis Media.

BACKGROUND: Chronic otitis media is described as a tympanic membrane perforation and ear discharge for more than six weeks duration. Ascending infection from the nasopharynx into the middle ear cleft has been attributed to prevent resolution of chronic otitis media. This research aims to determine the association between the microbiological flora of the nasopharynx with that of the middle ear in patients suffering from chronic (active) mucosal otitis media.. METHODS: Our study is a hospital-based cross-sectional survey. It was conducted from December 2015 to February 2017 at the Department of…

Intrapetrous internal carotid artery aneurysm diagnosed on the basis of middle ear effusion: A case report.

The present study reports a rare case of a giant intrapetrous internal carotid aneurysm that compressed the internal jugular vein causing recurrent middle ear effusion in a 13-year-old female. Images obtained by computed tomography revealed middle ear effusion occupying the right side of the attic. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) resulted in a diagnosis of a giant aneurysm of the right intrapetrous carotid artery, with a diameter of 25 mm and a neighboring area of compression of the internal jugular vein. The patient was treated successfully using coil embolization. The present study the…

A new model for non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae middle ear infection in the Junbo mutant mouse.

Acute otitis media, inflammation of the middle ear, is the most common bacterial infection in children and, as a consequence, is the most common reason for antimicrobial prescription to this age group. There is currently no effective vaccine for the principal pathogen involved, non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi). The most frequently used and widely accepted experimental animal model of middle ear infection is in chinchillas, but mice and gerbils have also been used. We have established a robust model of middle ear infection by NTHi in the Junbo mouse, a mutant mouse line that spontaneo…
