Influence of Cholecystokinin-8 on Compound Nerve Action Potentials from Ventral Gastric Vagus in Rats.

OBJECTIVE: Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) has shown great promise as a potential therapy for a number of conditions, such as epilepsy, depression and for Neurometabolic Therapies, especially for treating obesity. The objective of this study was to characterize the left ventral subdiaphragmatic gastric trunk of vagus nerve (SubDiaGVN) and to analyze the influence of intravenous injection of gut hormone cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) on compound nerve action potential (CNAP) observed on the same branch, with the aim of understanding the impact of hormones on VNS and incorporating the methods

High variability of facial muscle innervation by facial nerve branches: A prospective electrostimulation study.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To examine by intraoperative electric stimulation which peripheral facial nerve (FN) branches are functionally connected to which facial muscle functions. STUDY DESIGN: Single-center prospective clinical study. METHODS: Seven patients whose peripheral FN branching was exposed during parotidectomy under FN monitoring received a systematic electrostimulation of each branch starting with 0.1 mA and stepwise increase to 2 mA with a frequency of 3 Hz. The electrostimulation and the facial and neck movements were video recorded simultaneously and evaluated independently by t…

Multi-session transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) elicits inflammatory and regenerative processes in the rat brain.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is increasingly being used in human studies as an adjuvant tool to promote recovery of function after stroke. However, its neurobiological effects are still largely unknown. Electric fields are known to influence the migration of various cell types in vitro, but effects in vivo remain to be shown. Hypothesizing that tDCS might elicit the recruitment of cells to the cortex, we here studied the effects of tDCS in the rat brain in vivo. Adult Wistar rats (n = 16) were randomized to either anodal or cathodal stimulation for either 5 or 10 consecutive

The two sides of associative plasticity in writer's cramp.

Neuronal plasticity is to be kept within operational limits to serve its purpose as a safe memory system that shapes and focuses sensory and motor representations. Temporal and spatial properties of motor cortical plasticity were assessed in patients with writer's cramp using a model of long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) of synaptic efficacy. Paired associative stimulation (PAS) combined repetitive electric stimulation of the median or ulnar nerve (MN or UN) with subsequent transcranial magnetic stimulation of the contralateral dominant motor cortex at 21.5 ms (MN-PAS2…

Nasal trigeminal inputs release the A5 inhibition received by the respiratory rhythm generator of the mouse neonate.

Experiments were performed on neonatal mice to analyze why, in vitro, the respiratory rhythm generator (RRG) was silent and how it could be activated. We demonstrated that in vitro the RRG in intact brain stems is silenced by a powerful inhibition arising from the pontine A5 neurons through medullary alpha(2) adrenoceptors and that in vivo nasal trigeminal inputs facilitate the RRG as nasal continuous positive airway pressure increases the breathing frequency, whereas nasal occlusion and nasal afferent anesthesia depress it. Because nasal trigeminal afferents project to the A5 nuclei, we appli

Ultraviolet B Treatment of the Forearm Alters Supraspinal Nociceptive Processing.

Exposing the skin to high levels of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation induces an inflammatory response that upregulates local nociceptive processing; this, in turn, facilitates protective responses to limit further injury. In this study, the UVB model was used to explore additional effects of inflammation on supraspinal nociceptive processing. Thirty-one healthy participants attended two sessions approximately 24 h apart. In each session, pressure-pain thresholds and sensitivity to sharp stimulation and heat were assessed in both forearms, and pressure-pain thresholds and sensitivity to sharp stim

Visuomotor paired associative stimulation enhances corticospinal excitability in post-stroke patients with upper-limb hemiparesis.

We assess the effectiveness of a visuomotor paired associative stimulation (vm-PAS) protocol targeting the Action Observation Network (AON) in chronic post-stroke patients with upper-limb mild hemiparesis. Vm-PAS consisted of hand-grasping action observation stimuli repeatedly paired with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) pulses over the ipsilesional primary motor cortex (M1). Fifteen post-stroke patients underwent a session of the vm-PAS and, as a control, of the standard excitatory PAS (M1-PAS), during which slow-rate electrical stimulation of the paretic limb was paired with M1-TMS. An Adaptable Phase-Tracking System for Parkinsonian Rest Tremor: Design and In-Clinic Feasibility.

BACKGROUND: Tremor is the most common movement disorder and a prevalent symptom of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Given the limitations of medication, which may not effectively treat tremor, and the limited availability of surgical treatments such as deep brain stimulation, there is a pressing clinical need for non-invasive therapeutic alternatives, including peripheral electrical stimulation. The high variability of PD tremor poses a challenge to such therapies and calls for person-specific stimulation parameters. METHODS: We developed a wrist-worn system inco

Episcleral venous pressure response to brain stem stimulation: Effect of topical lidocaine.

Episcleral venous pressure (EVP) is important for steady state intraocular pressure (IOP), as it has to be overcome by aqueous humor in order to leave the eye. Recent evidence suggests a neuronal tone being present, as topical anesthesia lowered EVP. The superior salivatory nucleus in the brainstem could be identified to elicit increases in EVP during electrical stimulation. In the present study the effect of topical anesthesia on the stimulation effect was investigated. 8 Spraque Dawley rats were anesthetized, artificially ventilated with CO2 monitoring and continuous blood pressure monitorin

Bimodal neuromodulation combining sound and tongue stimulation reduces tinnitus symptoms in a large randomized clinical study.

Tinnitus is a phantom auditory perception coded in the brain that can be bothersome or debilitating, affecting 10 to 15% of the population. Currently, there is no clinically recommended drug or device treatment for this major health condition. Animal research has revealed that sound paired with electrical somatosensory stimulation can drive extensive plasticity within the brain for tinnitus treatment. To investigate this bimodal neuromodulation approach in humans, we evaluated a noninvasive device that delivers sound to the ears and electrical stimulation to the tongue in a randomized, double-

The relationship between seizure in electroconvulsive therapy and pupillary response using an automated pupilometer.

OBJECTIVES: Seizure duration and morphology, postictal suppression, and sympathetic nervous system activation are all recommended as assessments of adequate seizure in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). However, blood pressure and heart rate are not typically assessed as part of sympathetic nervous system activation because of the administration of anesthetic or cardiovascular agents during ECT. Although the pupils are known to reflect to the activity of autonomic nervous system and the degree of brain damage, previous studies have not examined the relationship between seizure of electroconvulsi

The value of synchro-cystourethrometry for evaluating the relationship between urethral instability and overactive bladder.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between urethral instability (URI) and overactive bladder (OAB) in children. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 126 children with OAB and 36 children without OAB using synchro-cystourethrometry. The prevalence of detrusor overactivity (DO) and URI, and the diagnostic sensitivity of DO alone and DO combined with URI, was compared. The OAB children with URI voluntarily received transcutaneous electrical pudendal nerve stimulation with anisodamine (stimulation group, SG) or anisodamine alone (non-stimulation group, NSG). The effectiveness of treatmen

Application of Compound Action Potential of Facial Muscles Evoked by Transcranial Stimulation as a Reference Waveform of Motor-evoked Potential in Spinal Surgery.

Transcranial electrical stimulation motor-evoked potential (TES-MEP) has been widely used to monitor major motor pathways in cranial and spinal surgeries. However, the results of TES-MEP might be strongly influenced by anesthetic agents and muscle relaxants. To compensate for this effect, a technique using compound muscle action potentials of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB-CMAP) evoked by median nerve stimulation has recently been reported. In this article, we adopted the transcranial electrical stimulation motor-evoked potential of facial muscles (TES-FMEP) instead of APB-CMAP as a referen

Dorsal Root Ganglionic Field Stimulation Relieves Spontaneous and Induced Neuropathic Pain in Rats.

UNLABELLED: Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) electrical stimulation (ganglionic field stimulation [GFS]) is effective in relieving clinical pain, but its mechanism is unknown. We therefore developed a rat model for GFS to test analgesic effects in the context of neuropathic pain. GFS was applied with a bipolar electrode at L4, using parameters replicating clinical use (20 Hz, 150-μs pulse width, current at 80% of motor threshold). Neuropathic pain was generated by tibial nerve injury (TNI). Pain behavior was monitored by determining the threshold for withdrawal from punctate mechanical stimuli, by i

Dopamine and glutamate interaction mediates reinstatement of drug-seeking behavior by stimulation of the ventral subiculum.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction is a chronic brain disease characterized by recurrent episodes of relapse to drug-seeking/-taking behaviors. The ventral subiculum, the primary output of the hippocampus, plays a critical role in mediating drug-seeking behavior. METHODS: A d-amphetamine intravenous self-administration rat model was employed along with focal electrical stimulation of the ventral subiculum (20 Hz/200 pulses) to examine its role in reinstatement of drug-seeking behavior. Dopamine efflux in the nucleus accumbens was measured by in vivo microdialysis and subsequent HPLC-ED analyses. Phar

Trigeminal Proprioception Evoked by Strong Stretching of the Mechanoreceptors in Müller's Muscle Induces Reflex Contraction of the Orbital Orbicularis Oculi Slow-Twitch Muscle Fibers.

OBJECTIVE: The mixed orbicularis oculi muscle lacks an intramuscular proprioceptive system such as muscle spindles, to induce reflex contraction of its slow-twitch fibers. We evaluated whether the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle function as extrinsic mechanoreceptors to induce reflex contraction of the slow-twitch fibers of the orbicularis oculi in addition to those of the levator and frontalis muscles. METHODS: We evaluated in patients with aponeurosis-disinserted blepharoptosis whether strong stretching of the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle from upgaze with unilateral lid load indu

Recurrent inhibition of the bladder C fibre reflex in the cat and its response to naloxone.

Recurrent inhibition of the bladder C fibre reflex was studied in adult female cats anaesthetized with alpha-chloralose. Test reflexes were evoked by electrical stimulation of bladder Adelta and C afferents in the right pelvic nerve and were recorded from the proximal end of a small ipsilateral pelvic nerve branch, transected close to the bladder. Such test reflexes were consistently depressed by repetitive electrical stimulation of the contralateral bladder pelvic nerve (20 Hz, 20 s) at intensities sufficient to recruit axons of bladder preganglionic neurones. The inhibition could be evoked a

Pacing of interstitial cells of Cajal in the murine gastric antrum: neurally mediated and direct stimulation.

Phase advancement of electrical slow waves and regulation of pacemaker frequency was investigated in the circular muscle layer of the gastric antra of wild-type and W/W(V) mice. Slow waves in the murine antrum of wild-type animals had an intrinsic frequency of 4.4 cycles min(-1) and were phase advanced and entrained to a maximum of 6.3 cycles min(-1) using 0.1 ms pulses of electrical field stimulation (EFS) (three pulses delivered at 3-30 Hz). Pacing of slow waves was blocked by tetrodotoxin (TTX) and atropine, suggesting phase advancement was mediated via intrinsic cholinergic nerves. Phase a
