The Photocycle of the Red Light-Sensitive Plant-like Cryptochrome CryP from Phaeodactylum tricornutum.

Cryptochromes act as photoreceptors in diverse organisms and bind flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) as a chromophore. The plant-like cryptoc … al radical state takes hours with a time constant of 40 min. Moreover, we validate the existence of energy transfer between the two chromophores depending on the flavin redox state using fluorescence spectroscopy. We propose a detailed mechanism for the photocycle of CryP, highlighting the contribution of two separate reduction pathways.

Electrochemical determination of dihydroxybenzene isomers utilising poly-L-cystine-AgTiCrO2 nanohybrids.

The catechol (CH), hydroquinone (HO), and resorcinol (RN) belong to the class of dihydroxy benzene isomers (DHBIs) and pose a detrimental influence on living organisms and the ecosystem. The development of the electrocatalyst for the reliable low-concentration determination of DHBIs is of current research significance. In this context, the AgTiCrO2 nanohybrid is synthesised by employing the combustion (CN) method. The synthesised nanohybrid is analysed for phase structure and vibrational modes via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The elemental composition and morphological featu

Toward Efficient Hydrogen Production: Impact of Solid Solution of Tungsten on Nickel-Iron Hydroxide OER Catalysts.

Designing catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that are platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) is vital for making the production of hydrogen via water splitting more cost-effective. A trimetallic catalyst, NiFeW-(OH)2, was synthesized and studied using electrochemical methods, exhibiting higher catalytic performance than bare nickel-iron, manifested by faster reaction kinetics, evidenced by a lower Tafel slope and reduced effective resistance. This catalyst served as a parent compound for heat-treated catalysts in various conditions, such as air and inert atmosphere, to study the e

Machine-Learned Dynamics of Surface Polarons at Reduced Oxide Surfaces.

Reducible oxides exhibit a rich interplay of electronic, structural, and chemical properties that underpin applications in catalysis, photovoltaics, batteries, and energy storage. This interplay is strongly shaped by excess electrons, often introduced by oxygen vacancies, which localize as small polarons and influence charge transport and surface chemistry. At surfaces, these polarons play a central role in charge localization, mobility, and reactivity, yet their finite-temperature dynamics remain difficult to access from first-principles due to the long time scales needed to adequately sample

Decoupling X-Ray Absorption and Emission: Ionic TADF Scintillators With Heavy-Atom-Functionalized Organic Anions.

Organic scintillators hold great promise for x-ray imaging due to their solution processability and low cost, yet their practical application is fundamentally limited by weak x-ray absorption and inefficient exciton utilization. Here, we overcome these limitations through a functional-separation design that yields exceptional radioluminescence in a purely organic system. We have developed ionic phosphonium scintillators integrating thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) cations with heavy-atom-containing organic anions. In this architecture, the organic anions act as sensitizing anten

Computational exploration of anticancer drug adsorption on a porous organic nanocage: Insights from density functional theory for targeted nanocarrier design.

Designing efficient nanocarriers for targeted cancer therapy requires a deep understanding of drug-nanomaterial interactions at the molecular level. In this study, the adsorption behavior of four clinically relevant anticancer drugs, 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), hydroxyurea (HU), chlormethine (CM), and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), on a CC1 nanocage was systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT). Geometry optimizations and thermodynamic analyses were performed at the ωB97XD/6-31G(d, p) level, while optical properties were assessed through time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations at

Catalytic Anionic Substituents Effects as Selectivity Mediators in Photocatalytic Hydrogen Atom Transfers.

Photo-induced hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalysis has become a powerful platform for the direct and selective functionalization of ubiquitous C─H bonds. Traditionally, the outcome of these transformations is dictated by the interplay between C─H bond dissociation energies and polar effects, enabling predictable yet inherently substrate-controlled selectivity. Recently, a fundamentally new strategy has emerged that relies on the catalytic and reversible modulation of substrate electronics to transiently enhance the reactivity of targeted C─H bonds. Notably, catalytic full or partial deproton

Restoration of Neuronal Metabolism and Memory in Alzheimer's Disease by Reprogramming the Exosomal microRNA Network.

Historically the development of amyloid-β plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles have been used as the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there is increasing evidence suggests that these pathological hallmarks are secondary to deeper metabolic defect in the brain. AD is progressively being recognized as a metabolic synaptic disorder characterized by insulin resistance, impaired cellular energy homeostasis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and synaptic degeneration. Synaptic plasticity is closely linked to the insulin-sensitive system of glucose utilization, mitochondrial activity, and

Mitigating triplet loss in 2D WSe2/non-fullerene heterostructures using halogenated acceptors.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) can be combined with organic semiconductors to form hybrid van der Waals heterostructures. Specially, non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) stand out due to their excellent absorption and exciton diffusion properties. Here, we couple monolayer tungsten diselenide (ML-WSe2) with two well performing NFAs, ITIC, and IT-4F (fluorinated ITIC) to achieve hybrid architectures. Using steady state and time resolved spectroscopic techniques, we reveal sub-picosecond free charge generation in the heterostructure of ML-WSe2 with ITIC, where however, bim

The Water Droplet Contact Line Probed with Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes at the Air-Water Interface.

Within the issue of sessile droplet evaporation, particularly important is the behavior of the triple phase contact line governed by pinning phenomena. We demonstrate how pristine, insoluble multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) can exhibit ordering phenomena at the air-water interface, contribute to droplet pinning, and are also responsive to the evolving shape of evaporating water droplets at the contact line. The arc-discharge-synthesized MWNTs were of high quality, but they were mixed with graphitic impurity particles in the 10-100 nm size ranges. The MWNTs were ordered into chain structures

Beyond pressure and volume: mechanical power levels in a cohort of intensive care unit patients.

BACKGROUND: Several ventilator parameters can be used to evaluate gas exchange and mechanical properties of the respiratory system in acute respiratory failure patients. The calculation of mechanical power (MP), a critical parameter that summarizes the energy transferred from the ventilator to the patient's lungs, is not routinely made in these patients. METHODS: This study analyzed the distribution of MP in a cohort of 70 patients requiring mechanical ventilation and investigated its association with clinical outcomes. RESULTS: This study included 39 men and 31 women with a mean age of 57.7…

Atomic Hydrogen Mediated Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation Reactions.

Although atomic hydrogen (H*) is a crucial active species during the electrocatalytic hydrogenation process, its excessive production accelerates its self-quenching into hydrogen (H2), which decreases the reduction efficiency of the target reactant and causes cathode instability. Herein, a universal strategy is proposed to enhance the efficiency of diverse electrocatalytic hydrogenation reactions (such as cyanide (CN-), nitrate (NO3 -), carbon dioxide (CO2), or oxygen (O2) reductions) based on the supply-demand balance of H*. Through passivating the terminal oxygen sites with unsaturated coord

Detection of Gas-Phase Formaldehyde via C2H5O+ Produced by VUV Illumination and Enhanced by Doping Propionaldehyde.

Formaldehyde (CH2O) is one of the main indoor organic pollutants due to its carcinogenicity and teratogenicity. However, CH2O has been an undetectable species for common VUV lamp-based photoionization mass spectrometry (PI-MS) due to its high ionization energy. In this article, we report a mass spectrometric technique developed for detecting gas-phase CH2O by monitoring C2H5O+ (m/z 45) formed in VUV illumination and enhanced by doping propionaldehyde. The unique mass peak at m/z 45 was observed by VUV illuminating ppm-level CH2O in ∼1300 Pa of nitrogen or synthetic air. The m/z 45 ion was assi

Macronutrients, Micronutrients, and Malnutrition: Effects of Nutrition on Immune Function in Infants and Young Children.

The function of the immune system is not only dependent on factors like genetics, age, the environment, and exposure to infectious agents and allergens but also on our microbiota and our diet. It has been known for centuries that food can influence health and vulnerability to infection. This is especially true for infants, young children, and the elderly. This review focuses on how nutrition can support immune function from gestation to school-aged children. Immune support begins during pregnancy by the mother's diet and transfer of nutritional components as well as antibodies to her fetus. Af

ERICH4 is not involved in the assembly and secretion of intestinal lipoproteins.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The small intestine plays a central role in lipid metabolism, most notably the uptake of dietary fats that are packaged into chylomicrons and secreted into the circulation for utilisation by peripheral tissues. While microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) is known to play a key role in this pathway, the intracellular assembly, trafficking, and secretion of chylomicrons is incompletely understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using human transcriptome datasets to find genes co-regulated with MTTP, we identified ERICH4 as a top hit. The gene encodes for glutamate-rich prote

The efficacy of a cellular approach to resilience-oriented operation of distribution grids based on eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix.

This study aims to address the following research query: In the event of an imminent disaster poised to impact distribution grids, what constitutes the optimal course of action for the distribution system operators to keep the lights on? To address this challenge, we propose a cost-efficient cellular model for enhancing the resilience of smart distribution grids. This model prioritizes resilience in the face of natural disasters or other disruptions that could impact service delivery. This method benefits both grid operators and consumers by ensuring reliable power supply while minimizing ener

Insight into the Corrosion Inhibition Performance of Pistia stratiotes Leaf Extract as a Novel Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel in 1 M HCl Solution.

In this research, the Pistia stratiotes leaf (PSL) extract was evaluated as a green corrosion inhibitor for the corrosion of mild steel in 1 M HCl using electrochemical measurements and surface characterization. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) spectra showed that the inhibitory activity of the phytochemical compounds enhanced with increasing concentration up to 400 ppm, which was reflected in the increase in the charge transfer resistance and double-layer capacitance. Regarding the effect of immersion time, EIS results indicated that the persistence of the PSL extract was between
