The Effect of Test, Electrode, and Rate on Electrocochleography Measures.

BACKGROUND: Electrocochleography (ECochG) is the measurement of stimulus-related cochlear potentials and the compound action potential (AP). Its primary clinical application is with the assessment of inner ear disorders. There are few studies examining the variability of ECochG measures. PURPOSE: The objective of the study was to examine the effect of test (i.e., initial versus retest), electrode (i.e., extratympanic versus tympanic), and stimulus rate (i.e., 7.7 versus 77.7/sec) on ECochG indices (i.e., summating potential [SP] amplitude, AP latency, AP amplitude, SP/AP amplitude ratio, and

Auditory P3 in female alcoholics.

BACKGROUND: The P3 (P300) has been considered to be a phenotypical marker of the risk for alcoholism. Although reductions in visual P3 in male and female alcoholics have been replicated, studies of auditory target P3 have been inconsistent. Our objective was to study the magnitude of auditory P3 reduction in female alcoholics and to establish the association between P3 reduction and alcoholism while taking into account comorbid depression and psychoactive drug dependence. The characteristics of P3 reduction were further examined by studying the reduction in family history-positive and -negativ

Auditory event-related potentials in poor readers.

Although poor readers (PR) are considered the major group among reading-disabled children, there are not event-related potentials (ERP) studies reported of PR on the subject. In this study, attentional and memory processes were studied in an auditory oddball task in PR and normal controls. ERP to auditory stimuli were recorded in 19 leads of the 10/20 system, using linked earlobes as references, in 20 normal children (10 female) and 20 PR (10 female) of the same age (10-12 years old). Two pure tones (1000 and 3000 Hz) were used in an oddball paradigm. No significant differences were observed i

Dynamics of free intracellular Ca2+ during synaptic and spike activity of cricket tibial motoneurons.

For all nervous systems, motoneurons are the main output pathway. They are involved in generating episodic motor activity as well as enduring motor rhythms. To determine whether changes in cytosolic Ca(2+) correlate with motor performance, we studied the spatiotemporal dynamics, mode of entry and role of free intracellular Ca(2+) in cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus) front leg tibial extensor and flexor motoneurons. Synaptic activation or intracellular depolarising current injection uniformly increased Ca(2+) with the same dynamics throughout the primary and secondary branches of the dendritic tree

Assessment of reorganization in the sensorimotor cortex after upper limb amputation.

OBJECTIVE: We wanted to investigate plastic changes occurring in the motor and somatosensory cortex after upper limb amputation, and their possible relationship to phantom pain. METHOD: To assess these plastic changes, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and source localization of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). Eleven patients with upper limb amputation were investigated. The phantom pain intensity was assessed by visual analogue scaling (VAS). RESULTS: Using TMS mapping, we found a significant lateralization of the amplitude-weighted centre of gravity (P<0.01) and an enl…

Effects of high-frequency sound on the guinea pig cochlea. Electrophysiological study using cochlear microphonics, action and endocochlear potential.

There are only a few studies investigating the effect of high-frequency sound on hearing. Authors investigated experimentally the effect of long exposure to high-frequency sound (19 and 25 kHz) below 100 dB (SPL) on guinea pig inner ear. Changes in cochlear microphonics (decrease of maximum output voltage) and especially in endocochlear potential (decrease of the absolute value of negative potential) were observed. The effects of high-frequency sound (10-30 kHz) on the inner ear were discussed.

Predicting spinal neurological prognosis in patients with surgical treatment for thoracic spinal stenosis based on neurological and neurophysiological evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to investigate the spinal neurological outcomes in patients who have undergone surgery for thoracic spinal stenosis (TSS) and to identify high-risk factors for poor spinal neurological prognosis.  METHODS: Patients were categorized into four subgroups based on TSS causes: thoracic disk herniation (TDH), ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligaments (OPLL), ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF), and OPLL + OLF. The following data were collected: (1) demographic and clinical data; (2) neurological evaluation; and (3) neurophysiological evaluation by combining somat

Changes in pitch height elicit both language-universal and language-dependent changes in neural representation of pitch in the brainstem and auditory cortex.

Language experience shapes encoding of pitch-relevant information at both brainstem and cortical levels of processing. Pitch height is a salient dimension that orders pitch from low to high. Herein we investigate the effects of language experience (Chinese, English) in the brainstem and cortex on (i) neural responses to variations in pitch height, (ii) presence of asymmetry in cortical pitch representation, and (iii) patterns of relative changes in magnitude of pitch height between these two levels of brain structure. Stimuli were three nonspeech homologs of Mandarin Tone 2 varying in pitch he

[Functional assessment of cochlear nerve and hearing].

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Since otoneurosurgical pathologies are being diagnosed increasingly early, the functional prognosis of surgery is gaining in importance. Hearing and cochlear nerve exploration can be carried out using three principal methods: pure-tone and speech audiometry, evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs), and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). The aim of this paper is to present the current knowledge on auditory functional assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical and scientific literature from the Pubmed-Medline database was reviewed. Recently published related book…

Effects on neural function of repleting vitamin E-deficient rats with alpha-tocopherol.

A severe and chronic deficiency of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is associated with a characteristic neurological syndrome with typical "clinical," neuropathological, and electrophysiological abnormalities in both humans and experimental animals. Repletion of vitamin E-deficient human subjects with alpha-tocopherol typically halts the progression of the neural signs and symptoms, and in some cases, can result in objective improvement. Electrophysiological parameters provide an objective measure of neural and visual function and improvement of some of these measures has been reported after reple

Comparison of second lumbrical and interosseus latencies with standard measures of median nerve function across the carpal tunnel: a prospective study of 450 hands.

The second lumbrical-interosseus distal motor latency (2LI-DML) was compared prospectively in 450 hands. Median nerve function was assessed by standard motor and sensory electrophysiological tests. In a control group of 100 hands the upper limit of normal for the 2LI-DML was 0.5 ms. In all hands studied the correlation coefficients of 2LI-DML were higher with sensory nerve tests than with motor studies. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) was diagnosed clinically in 276 hands, and 174 showed no clinical signs of CTS. The 2LI-DML was prolonged in 269 of the 276 hands, with clinical signs of CTS and no

Abeta-fiber mediated activation of cingulate cortex as correlate of central post-stroke pain.

A patient is presented who suffered a lateral brainstem infarction which selectively abolished pain and temperature sensitivity in the lower right limb. One year later central post-stroke pain had developed in the affected limb with touch and cold allodynia. P40m dipoles calculated from magnetoencephalographic fields after electrical stimulation of both tibial nerves were localized in SI as is seen in normal subjects. However, stimulation of the affected side caused deep pain sensations and elicited a large N80m component, best explained by an additionally active dipole in cingulate cortex. Th

Mechanisms underlying the depression of evoked fast EPSCs following in vitro ischemia in rat hippocampal CA1 neurons.

The mechanisms underlying the depression of evoked fast excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) following superfusion with medium deprived of oxygen and glucose (in vitro ischemia) for a 4-min period in hippocampal CA1 neurons were investigated in rat brain slices. The amplitude of evoked fast EPSCs decreased by 85 +/- 7% of the control 4 min after the onset of in vitro ischemia. In contrast, the exogenous glutamate-induced inward currents were augmented, while the spontaneous miniature EPSCs obtained in the presence of tetrodotoxin (TTX, 1 microM) did not change in amplitude during in vitro

Long duration ventral root potentials in the neonatal rat spinal cord in vitro; the effects of ionotropic and metabotropic excitatory amino acid receptor antagonists.

Long duration, primary afferent evoked ventral root potentials (VRP's) have been recorded in vitro from hemisected spinal cords prepared from 8-12-day-old rat pups. Single shock stimulation of a dorsal root at stimulus strengths sufficient to recruit C/group IV afferent fibres evoked a long duration (11.9 +/- 1.2 s) ipsilateral VRP in all preparations. This long duration VRP consisted of two components, (i) a slow wave, time to peak 137.0 +/- 5.1 ms, the amplitude of which was reduced to 8.7% of mean control value in the presence of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist D-AP5 (40 microM),

Vestibular stimulation enhances hippocampal long-term potentiation via activation of cholinergic septohippocampal cells.

Vestibular stimulation induced acetylcholine release in the hippocampus, and acetylcholine is known to facilitate long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus. Thus, we hypothesize that vestibular stimulation enhances LTP in CA1 in freely behaving rats, and this enhancement depends on the activation of septohippocampal cholinergic neurons. Field excitatory postsynaptic potentials were recorded in CA1 area of behaving rats following stimulation of the basal dendritic afferents. LTP was induced by a single stimulation train (100 pulses at 200 Hz) during passive whole-body rotation or during a
