BACKGROUND: Fractures of the mandible are among the most common injuries to the bones of the facial skeleton and are associated with a relatively high incidence of complications, particularly purulent-inflammatory conditions, especially when treatment is delayed. These complications and surgical interventions can damage the masticatory muscles, disrupt their physiological balance, impair mandibular movement and contribute to pain syndrome development. This study aimed to investigate the dynamics of pain severity, the restoration of stomatognathic apparatus function following purulent-inflammat

BACKGROUND: In microvascular decompression (MVD) procedures for hemifacial spasm (HFS), surgeons often encounter a rhomboid lip which may obscure the root exit zone (REZ) of the facial nerve. This study aims to explore the anatomical variations of rhomboid lips and their surgical implications to improve safety and effectiveness in MVD surgeries.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 111 patients treated for HFS between April 2021 and March 2023. The presence of a rhomboid lip was assessed through operative video records, and its characteristics, dissection methods, and impact on

Spinal anesthesia is one of the most frequently performed regional anesthesia techniques for a variety of surgeries world-wide. Cranial nerve palsy is a rarely reported complication of central neuraxial block. The etiology varies; however, it is most often associated with nerve compression or traction due to intracranial hypotension. In October 2023, we searched PubMed and Google Scholar databases for English-language articles published between 1952 and 2023. The following search terms were used in the search strategy: olfactory, optic, oculomotor, trochlear, trigeminal, abducens, facial, vest

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Paediatric maxillofacial trauma accounts for 15% of all maxillofacial trauma but remains a leading cause of mortality. The aim of this prospective, multicentric epidemiological study was to analyse the characteristics of maxillofacial fractures in paediatric patients managed in 14 maxillofacial surgery departments on five continents over a 1-year period.
METHODS: The following data were collected: age (preschool [0-6 years], school age [7-12 years], and adolescent [13-18 years]), cause and mechanism of the maxillofacial fracture, alcohol and/or drug abuse at the time of traum

Introduction. Glanzmann's thrombasthenia is a rare clotting disorder caused by impaired platelet function. Lack of awareness of the appropriate management of rare medical conditions may lead to patient dissatisfaction and potentially poor treatment outcome. Case Report. A 78-year-old male with a history of Glanzmann's thrombasthenia was admitted to the trauma service following a fall in which he sustained a facial laceration as well as maxillary sinus and nasal fractures. He received DDAVP 20 mcg and tranexamic acid upon presentation to the emergency department (ED). In the ED, the patient req

There is ample investigation into the optimal timing and approach to orbital blowout fracture (OBF) repair; however, less attention has been directed toward postoperative care. This is a multicenter IRB-approved retrospective review of patients with OBF presenting to our study sites between November 2008 and August 2016. Those with isolated OBF, over 18 years of age, and who had not suffered additional facial injuries or globe trauma were included. A total of 126 surgical cases of isolated OBF repair were identified that met our inclusion and exclusion criteria; 42.1% were outpatient repairs w…

BACKGROUND: Injuries of the maxillofacial complex represent one of the most important health problems worldwide. At present, in developing India, due to poor traffic sense, maxillofacial trauma and fractures are most epidemiologic diseases. Mandible is the largest and strongest facial bone and it is the second most commonly fractured bone. Mandibular fractures can involve only one site or can often involve multiple anatomic sites simultaneously.
AIMS: The present study is aimed to know the age- and sex-related prevalence of parasymphyseal fracture, fracture of angle, condylar fracture, symphy

Mandibular fractures are rare, most commonly occurring in young male patients who present with facial trauma. The etiology, incidence, and presentation vary among previous publications depending on cultural and socioeconomic factors of the region of origin. This multi-institutional study aims to present demographic characteristics, surgical treatment, and clinical outcomes of surgical repair of mandible fractures in the United States. An analysis of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) adult databases of the years 2006 through 2014 was perf

INTRODUCTION: Because of its functional and cosmetic importance, facial injuries, especially bony fractures are clinically very significant. Missed and maltreated fractures might result in malocclusion and disfigurement of the face, thus making accurate diagnosis of the fracture very essential. In earlier times, conventional radiography along with clinical examination played a major role in diagnosis of maxillofacial fractures. However, it was noted that the overlapping nature of bones and the inability to visualise soft tissue swelling and fracture displacement, especially in face, makes radi…

OBJECT: Similar to glioblastomas, high-grade meningiomas are difficult pathologies to control. In this study, the authors used boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), a tumor-selective intensive particle radiation modality, to treat high-grade meningioma.
METHODS: From June 2005 to September 2011, BNCT was applied 28 times in 20 cases of recurrent high-grade meningioma. All patients had previously undergone intensive treatments such as repetitive surgeries and multiple sessions of radiation therapy. Fluorine-18-labeled boronophenylalanine ((18)F-BPA) PET was performed before BNCT in 19 of the 2

OBJECTIVE: The treatment of frontobasilar fractures is a demanding aspect of craniofacial fracture management. A sequel of inadequate or improper fracture management presents cosmetic and functional problems which are very difficult to correct. The aim of this manuscript was to examine a group of growing patients treated for frontobasilar fractures and provide clinicians a possible therapeutic option for the treatment of these challenging fractures.
METHODS: In this investigation, 12 patients under the age of 16 years treated for severe injuries to the frontobasilar region were included. Thei

BACKGROUND: Precise repair of orbitozygomatic complex fractures is essential for proper re-establishment of facial symmetry, ocular globe position, and infraorbital nerve function. Controversy regarding the optimal treatment method remains.
METHODS: To compare uniform study groups, only patients without previous craniofacial injuries or operations who had sustained moderate-energy orbitozygomatic complex fractures, based on preoperative computed tomography scans, and who were treated using the Gillies repair or open reduction and internal fixation were selected. Quantifiable end-points, inclu…

Infragluteal deformities are a challenging complication following liposuction, particularly when injury occurs to the fibrous osteocutaneous bands of the gluteal crease. Various surgical solutions have been proposed, including autologous fat grafting, skin-lifting procedures, and flap reconstructions, yet a consistent, scar-free, and minimally invasive technique remains elusive. In this report, we present a new modified net suture technique, inspired by the hemostatic net used in aesthetic facial surgery, as a promising treatment for post-liposuction infragluteal deformities. After aggressive

Traumatic tattoos (TTs) with chronic scarring present a complex dermatological challenge, often requiring protocols to optimize pigment clearance and skin texture. This case report evaluates the synergy between a picosecond laser (Nd:YAG 1064 nm), a fractional CO₂ laser, and biostimulants. A 33-year-old female presented with a facial TT and scarring resulting from a 10-year-old injury. The lesions were located on the right forehead and the periocular area, the latter involving an underlying titanium plate. Management began with a fractional CO₂ laser combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) fo

BACKGROUND: Parotid oncocytoma is a rare benign neoplasm for which surgical excision remains the standard treatment. Although the recurrence rate is generally low, it increases significantly in cases with multifocal lesions or incomplete surgical excision. In such scenarios, postoperative radiotherapy (RT) has been shown to improve local control, reduce recurrence rates, and minimize the need for reoperation. This report presents a representative case of parotid oncocytoma, with a focused discussion on therapeutic decision-making from a radiation oncologist's perspective.
CASE REPORT: We repo
