Loureirin C and Xanthoceraside Prevent Abnormal Behaviors Associated with Downregulation of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor and AKT/mTOR/CREB Signaling in the Prefrontal Cortex Induced by Chronic Corticosterone Exposure in Mice.

Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is one of the most abundant neurotrophic factors, and its deficits are involved in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorders (MDD). Loureirin C (Lou C) is a compound derived from red resin extracted from the stems of Chinese dragon's blood. Xanthoceraside (Xan) is a triterpenoid saponin extracted from the husks of Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge. These compounds have neuroprotective effects through upregulation of BDNF. The present study aimed to evaluate whether Lou C and Xan attenuate abnormal behaviors induced by chronic corticosterone (CORT) admin

Grazing Seasons and Stocking Rates Affects the Relationship between Herbage Traits of Alpine Meadow and Grazing Behaviors of Tibetan Sheep in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Under the combined effect of stocking rate and grazing season, it is very significant to ascertain whether there is a quantitative relationship between plant community characteristics, chemical composition of forage, and grazing behaviors of Tibetan sheep to better utilize native pasture in the northeast region of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). The two consecutive year observation experiments on Tibetan sheep's grazing behavior were conducted to evaluate the above-stated relationships between stocking rates of 8 sheep/ha and 16 sheep/ha stocking rates in the both the warm and cold seasons.

Rigidity and Sensory Sensitivity: Independent Contributions to Selective Eating in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults.

Objective: Selective or "picky" eating (SE) refers to rejection of a wide range of familiar and unfamiliar foods based on aversions to their … of core ASD symptoms, repetitive/restrictive behaviors (e.g., rigidity), and sensory sensitivity on feeding behaviors. These traits are found not only in ASD but also in other clinical groups and the general population, albeit often at subclinical levels. Identifying mechanisms of SE across various populations is critical to inform intervention approaches. Methods: …

Dopaminergic modulation of olfactory-evoked motor output in sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus L.).

Detection of chemical cues is important to guide locomotion in association with feeding and sexual behavior. Two neural pathways responsible for odor-evoked locomotion have been characterized in the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus L.), a basal vertebrate. There is a medial pathway originating in the medial olfactory bulb (OB) and a lateral pathway originating from the rest of the OB. These olfactomotor pathways are present throughout the life cycle of lampreys, but olfactory-driven behaviors differ according to the developmental stage. Among possible mechanisms, dopaminergic (DA) modulation in

Intrauterine Growth Restriction Modifies the Accumbal Dopaminergic Response to Palatable Food Intake.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) associates with increased preference for palatable foods and altered insulin sensitivity. Insulin modulates the central dopaminergic response and changes behavioral responses to reward. We measured the release of dopamine in the accumbens during palatable food intake in IUGR rats both at baseline and in response to insulin. From pregnancy day 10 until birth, gestating Sprague-Dawley rats received either an ad libitum (Control), or a 50% food restricted (FR) diet. In adulthood, palatable food consumption and feeding behavior entropy was assessed using an e…

Association of Household Food- and Drink-Sharing Practices With Human Herpesvirus 8 Seroconversion in a Cohort of Zambian Children.

BACKGROUND: Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection occurs in early childhood and is associated with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV- … 93-.99). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to find a temporal association between limited child feeding behaviors and risk for HHV-8 infection. Child food- and drink-sharing behaviors should be included in efforts to minimize HHV-8 transmission, and households with a large number of siblings should receive additional counseling as childhood infections occur in …

Comparison of biochemical stress indicators in juvenile captive estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) following physical restraint or chemical restraint by midazolam injection.

Using a prospective, randomized study design we demonstrate that midazolam sedation minimizes acidosis compared with physical restraint in captive juvenile estuarine crocodiles during handling or noninvasive procedures at preferred body temperature. A dose of midazolam (5.0 mg/kg) was administered intramuscularly into the forelimb of 20 male estuarine crocodiles weighing 2-3.5 kg. Their heart and respiratory rate and degree of sedation were monitored until recovery and then daily for 7 subsequent days. Blood samples were taken at 30, 60, 90, 180, and 360 min. We recorded lactate, partial press

Intrahypothalamic pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide regulates energy balance via site-specific actions on feeding and metabolism.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that both the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei (PVN) and ventromedial nuclei (VMN) regulate energy homeostasis through behavioral and metabolic mechanisms. Receptors for pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) are abundantly expressed in these nuclei, suggesting PACAP may be critical for the regulation of feeding behavior and body weight. To characterize the unique behavioral and physiological responses attributed to select hypothalamic cell groups, PACAP was site-specifically injected into the PVN or VMN. Overall food intake was signifi…

Methamphetamine causes anorexia in Drosophila melanogaster, exhausting metabolic reserves and contributing to mortality.

Methamphetamine (MA) appears to produce neurotoxic effects, in part, through disruptions of energy metabolism. A recent study of the whole-body proteome of Drosophila melanogaster showed many changes in energy metabolism-related proteins, leading us to hypothesize that MA toxicity may cause whole-body disruptions of energy metabolism. To test this, we monitored the response of energy reserves and other metabolites to MA-exposure with and without the addition of dietary glucose. We also monitored changes in feeding behavior, locomotor activity and respiration rates associated with MA-exposure t…

The effect of body weight on some welfare indicators in feedlot cattle in a hot environment.

Heat stress has important effects on the welfare of livestock. The effects of heat stress in cattle include changes in biological functions and behaviors. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavioral differences between light and heavy feedlot cattle reared in a hot environment. Sixteen male Holstein feedlot cattle were allocated to light (353.8 ± 15.5 kg, n = 8) and heavy (737.1 ± 15.8 kg, n = 8) groups according to their live weight and were kept in a semi-open feedlot barn. The individual behavioral response variables measured were standing, lying, feeding, drinking, ruminating,

The neuroimmunoendocrine network in the complex host-parasite relationship during murine cysticercosis.

We review here the role that sex steroids play in experimental intraperitoneal Taenia crassiceps cysticercosis of male and female BalbC/AnN mice. Briefly, estrogens favour and androgens hinder the reproduction of cysticerci by at least two main mechanisms: 1) through estradiol tilting the TH2/TH1 immune system balance towards parasite-permissive TH2 response, which is IL-6 dependent mediating P450-aromatase over expression, shunting testosterone towards estradiol and thus creating a positive feed-back loop which progressively favours TH2 response, blocking in turns TH1 and furthers parasite gro

Persistence of a behavioral food-anticipatory circadian rhythm following dorsomedial hypothalamic ablation in rats.

Circadian rhythms of behavior in rodents are regulated by a system of circadian oscillators, including a master light-entrainable pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus that mediates synchrony to the day-night cycle, and food-entrainable oscillators located elsewhere that generate rhythms of food-anticipatory activity (FAA) synchronized to daily feeding schedules. Despite progress in elucidating neural and molecular mechanisms of circadian oscillators, localization of food-entrainable oscillators driving FAA remains an enduring problem. Recent evidence suggests that the dorsomedial hypothala

Long-lasting effects of early barbiturates on central nervous system and behavior.

Forty years of prescribing barbiturates to pregnant women and infants, and thirty years of animal research have shown that barbiturates affect the developing central nervous system (CNS) and behavior. This paper compiles and reviews animal and selected human literature in this research area. Early barbiturate exposure in animals reduces brain weight with related changes in brain biochemistry and neuromorphology. Significant changes may be found in surviving adult offspring. Evidence of CNS and behavioral damage in human beings due to early barbiturate exposure is not clearcut, however, confoun

Development of a subacute ruminal acidosis risk score and its prediction using milk mid-infrared spectra in early-lactation cows.

A routine monitoring for subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) on the individual level could support the minimization of economic losses and the ensuring of animal welfare in dairy cows. The objectives of this study were (1) to develop a SARA risk score (SRS) by combining information from different data acquisition systems to generate an integrative indicator trait, (2) the investigation of associations of the SRS with feed analysis data, blood characteristics, performance data, and milk composition, including the fatty acid (FA) profile, (3) the development of a milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectra-bas

[Antidepressant effects of the extract of Dendrobium nobile Lindl on chronic unpredictable mild stress-induced depressive mice].

To investigate whether the extract of Dendrobium nobile Lindl (DNL) has an antidepressant effect on chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depressive mice, 72 BALB/c male mice were randomly divided into the control group, the CUMS model group, the extract of DNL groups (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg DNL, i.g.) and the paroxetine group (10 mg/kg, i.g.). The different doses of DNL or the paroxetine was administered orally once daily to CUMS mice for 8 weeks (containing two-week preventive medication before the modeling). The same volume of distilled water was given to the control group and the

Ultrasonic vocalizations and maternal-infant interactions in a rat model of fetal alcohol syndrome.

When isolated from their dams and littermates, rat pups emit ultrasonic vocalizations to elicit attention and retrieval from their dams. This study examined the effects of perinatal alcohol exposure on ultrasonic vocalizations and maternal-infant interactions. Alcohol was administered throughout gestation to the dams and during the early postnatal period to the pups. Control groups consisted of a nontreated control and an intubated, pair-fed control. Ultrasonic vocalizations were measured on postnatal day (PD) 5 under varying conditions of isolation. Maternal behaviors were examined on PD2, 4,

Valorization of Distilled Paint Waste as a Modifier of Polymer Matrices Based on ABS, PP and PS.

This study evaluates the feasibility of incorporating a specific batch of distilled paint waste into acry-lonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) matrices at nominal feed contents of 10, 20, and 30 wt.%. After drying and grinding, the waste was compounded by extrusion and specimens were produced by injection molding. Melt-flow behavior, density, impact and tensile properties, thermal stability, thermal transitions, and dynamic-mechanical response were investigated. The effect of waste addition was strongly matrix dependent. In PS, MFR increased from 9.52 to

An insecticide oral-dosing method for the German cockroach (Blattodea: Ectobiidae).

BACKGROUND: Insecticide baits are commonly used to control the German cockroach [Blattella germanica (L.)]. Because bait performance is dependent on foraging and feeding behavior, forced external exposures with bait active ingredients are often used to estimate physiological susceptibility without behavioral confounders. However, relying on external contact methods may not be appropriate for baits because of their oral route of entry. To increase the utilization of oral exposures for German cockroaches, we describe a novel method of conducting precise oral dosing of insecticides in an accessib…
