Do Infants With Robin Sequence Have Improved Feeding and Weight Gain After Mandibular Distraction?

PURPOSE: Infants with Robin sequence (RS) typically have impaired weight gain, presumed to result primarily from upper airway obstruction. Operations that improve airway obstruction are therefore theorized to facilitate feeding and weight gain, but the relationship between airway intervention and feeding improvement remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate weight gain over the first 3 years of life in patients with RS. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with RS treated at Boston Children's Hospital from 1995 to 2016. The primary predictor variable was type

Effect of lower esophageal gastric tube implantation in postoperative enteral nutritional support in patients with laryngeal cancer: A study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: For a long time, postoperative nutritional support for laryngeal cancer patients has depended on the gastric tube for enteral nutrition. Silica gel gastric tube is often used in clinical practice; however, the gastric tube placed in the conventional depth often leads to various complications in the stomach, thus damaging the nutritional status of patients and leading to the poor prognosis. METHODS/DESIGN: A total of 80 patients with laryngeal cancer in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery department of Deyang people's hospital from May 2020 to April 2022 will be selected and rand

Adoptive transfer of Pfkfb3-disrupted hematopoietic cells to wild-type mice exacerbates diet-induced hepatic steatosis and inflammation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hepatic steatosis and inflammation are key characteristics of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, whether and how hepatic steatosis and liver inflammation are differentially regulated remains to be elucidated. Considering that disruption of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-biphosphatase 3 (Pfkfb3/iPfk2) dissociates fat deposition and inflammation, the present study examined a role for Pfkfb3/iPfk2 in hematopoietic cells in regulating hepatic steatosis and inflammation in mice. METHODS: Pfkfb3-disrupted (Pfkfb3 +/-) mice and wild-type (WT) litter

Hepatic stellate cell activation promotes alcohol-induced steatohepatitis through Igfbp3 and SerpinA12.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Steatohepatitis drives fibrogenesis in alcohol-related liver disease. Recent studies have suggested that hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) may regulate the parenchymal cell injury and inflammation that precedes liver fibrosis, although the mechanism remains incompletely defined. Neuropilin-1 (NRP-1) and synectin are membrane proteins implicated in HSC activation. In this study, we disrupted NRP-1 and synectin as models to evaluate the role of HSC activation on the development of steatohepatitis in response to alcohol feeding in mice. METHODS: Mice with HSC-selective deletion of

Preventive health counselling during antenatal care using the pregnancy risk assessment monitoring system (PRAMS) in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Maternal behaviours during pregnancy have short- and long-term consequences for maternal and infant health. Pregnancy is an ideal opportunity to encourage positive behaviour change. Despite this, limited information exists about the nature and content of lifestyle advice provided by healthcare professionals during antenatal care. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Ireland is based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed PRAMS that monitors maternal behaviours and experiences before, during and after pregnancy. The aim of the study was to a

High Dietary Protein Does Not Alter Renal Prostanoids and Other Oxylipins in Normal Mice or in Those with Inherited Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: Ex vivo studies suggest that increased renal prostanoids can mediate effects of high-protein (HP) compared with low-protein (LP) diets on normal and diseased kidneys. However, a short-term HP feeding study in normal male rats failed to demonstrate higher renal prostanoids in vivo. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether long-term HP feeding alters renal prostanoids in male and female mice, with and without kidney disease. METHODS: Weanling normal mice (CD1) and mice with kidney disease (CD1-pcy/pcy mice) were fed standard diets with normal protein [NP,

Toxoplasma gondii in small exotic felids from zoos in Europe and the Middle East: serological prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii infections and cases of clinical toxoplasmosis have been recorded in zoo animals. Wild felids in human care can serve as definitive hosts that shed oocysts, but also as intermediate hosts for the parasite. Some felid species, such as the Pallas's cat (Otocolobus manul) or sand cat (Felis margarita), may suffer from clinically apparent toxoplasmosis. In the present study, our main aim was to assess risk factors for T. gondii infections in small exotic felids. METHODS: A seroepidemiological study was conducted using the reduviid bug Dipetalogaster maxima for blood

Antivirus effectiveness of ivermectin on dengue virus type 2 in Aedes albopictus.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease over the past 50 years, with a 30-fold increase in global incidence. Dengue vector control is a key component for the dengue control strategy, since no absolutely effective vaccine or drug is available yet. However, the rapid rise and spread of mosquito insecticide resistance have become major threats to the efficiency of insecticide-based vector control activities. Thus, innovative vector control tools are badly needed. This study aims to confirm the antivirus effectiveness of ivermectin on dengue virus type 2
