The aim of this study was to assess bone healing and secondary fracture displacement after corrective osteotomy of the distal radius without any cortical contact using palmar locking plates without bone grafting. Between 2009 and 2021, 11 palmar corrective osteotomies of extra-articular malunited distal radius fractures and palmar plate fixations without the use of bone grafts and without cortical contact, were assessed. All patients showed complete osseous restoration and significant improvement in all radiographic parameters. Except for one patient, there were no secondary dislocations or lo

RATIONALE: The treatment methods of pediatric scaphoid nonunion are still controversial. To our knowledge, arthroscopic-assisted treatments for pediatric scaphoid nonunion has not been reported in the English-language literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to report the use of arthroscopic-assisted bone grafting for scaphoid nonunion fracture in 3 patients and present a literature review.
PATIENTS CONCERNS: Two 15-year-old patients developed carpal joint injuries over a year, prior to their hospital presentation, since they had not received adequate treatment. The third patient,

Fractures of the tubular bones of the hand are common and potentially debilitating. The majority of these injuries may be treated without an operation. Surgery, however, offers distinct advantages in properly selected cases. We present a review of hand fracture management, with special attention paid to advances since 2008. The history and mechanisms of these fractures are discussed, as are treatment options and common complications. Early mobilization of the fractured hand is emphasized because soft tissue recovery may be more problematic than that of bone.

Paediatric bones exhibit greater elasticity due to their distinct biomechanical properties, enabling them to absorb and dissipate mechanical forces more effectively than adult bones. This inherent flexibility provides increased resistance to fractures under comparable loading conditions. However, despite this resilience, high-energy trauma can still result in complex injury patterns. Fractures involving the physis are of particular concern, as they carry a significant risk of growth disturbances and long-term deformities. We present a rare case of a girl in early childhood (preschool) who susta

Osteoporosis is a generalized disease of bone that increases fracture risk. Multiple factors influence this risk, besides low bone mass. To decrease osteoporotic fractures, those patients who require preventive management should be readily identified. This paper aims to review current information on the use of the fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX) in Latin America. Bone mineral density measurement is currently the method of reference for evaluating the fracture risk and opting for treatment; but, it misses a notable proportion of individuals who have clinical risk factors for osteoporosis a

Facial bone and especially mandibular fractures are injuries in which first aid and management of late complications require dental professionals, and consequently all dentists should be familiar with the modern principles of their treatment. Tooth involvement is common in mandibular and maxillary fractures and can require more treatment than does the jaw fracture. Nonsurgical treatment of bone fractures involves immobilization, which for the facial bones is achieved with maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) using dental fixed arch bars. Hence, associated tooth injuries are difficult or impossible

Stress fractures are part of a continuum of changes in healthy bones in response to repeated mechanical deformation from physical activity. If the activity produces excessive repetitive stress, osteoclastic processes in the bone may proceed at a faster pace than osteoblastic processes, thus weakening the bone and augmenting susceptibility to stress fractures. Overall stress fracture incidence is about three cases per 1,000 in active duty Servicemembers, but it is much higher among Army basic trainees: 19 per 1,000 for men and 80 per 1,000 for women. Well-documented risk factors include female

This prospective study aimed to compare computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the preoperative assessment of acute midfacial trauma. Twenty patients received posttraumatic CT and MRI scans using a 3T scanner with a dedicated 15-channel dentomaxillofacial coil. Five MRI protocols were evaluated: UTE, DESS, Dark Bone, StarVIBE, and STIR. Three observers qualitatively assessed fracture detection, image quality, fracture line visibility, cortical delineation, and bone-to-soft-tissue contrast using a five-point scale. Descriptive statistics and inter-observer reliability

UNLABELLED: Pediatric forearm bowing fractures, also known as plastic deformation fractures, are a clinically important but often underdiagnosed injury pattern. These fractures usually occur from longitudinal compressive forces such as falls on an outstretched hand, causing plastic deformation that exceeds the elastic limit of pediatric bone. Patients often present with nonspecific symptoms like pain, swelling, and limited pronation-supination, and these injuries can be subtle on radiographs. Using standardized measurement methods, such as the percentage of radial bowing relative to total bone

Background/Objectives: Pycnodysostosis is a rare genetic disorder causing skeletal dysplasia. It is determined by a gene mutation leading to cathepsin K deficiency and predisposes a patient to osteosclerosis, resulting in increased bone fragility. The altered bone quality typical of this disease is responsible for an increased risk of fractures. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the orthopedic manifestations and potential pitfalls in the surgical treatments of pathological fractures in a series of patients treated in our institution who were affected by pycnodysostosis. Methods: We retr

To date 45 autosomal recessive disease-causing variants are reported in the FKBP10 gene. Those variant were found to be associated with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) for which the hallmark phenotype is bone fractuers or Bruck Syndrome (BS) where bone fractures are accompanied with contractures. In addition, a specific homozygous FKBP10 mutation (p.Tyr293del) has been described in Yup'ik Inuit population to cause Kuskokwim syndrome (KS) in which contractures without fractures are observed. Here we present an extended Palestinian family with 10 affected individuals harboring a novel homozygous sp

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell disorder with related organ dysfunction, including hypercalcemia, renal insufficiency, anemia, and bone disease. Osteolytic bone lesions that result in pain and pathologic fractures are a major source of morbidity and the use of bisphosphonates is generally safe and effective treatment in reducing myeloma-related skeletal fractures and associated morbidity. We present a 73-year-old African American woman with MM in remission and on intravenous (IV) bisphosphonate therapy in the past five years who reported gradually worsening bilateral thigh pain of six m

Abstract Few studies exist evaluating fracture prediction in women aged 50-59. Clinical risk factors are important determinants for fracture prediction in younger postmenopausal women since most fractures occur outside the range of an osteoporotic bone mineral density. Although fracture incidence rates in this age group are about one-half of those aged 60-69, considerable costs and loss of quality-adjusted life years are still incurred in this age group. We sought to determine what clinical risk factors would predict subsequent fractures. Questionnaires were mailed out to 546 rural women who u

Osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality through its association with age-related fractures. Although most effort in fracture prevention has been directed at retarding the rate of age-related bone loss, and reducing the frequency and severity of trauma among elderly people, evidence is growing that peak bone mass is an important contributor to bone strength during later life. The normal patterns of skeletal growth have been well characterized in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. It has been confirmed that boys have higher bone mineral content, but not volumetric bone de

Advances in the understanding of the physiological process of bone healing and its impairment (i.e., nonunion) require appropriate models and precise standardization. The femoral osteotomy and external fixation mouse model meets these requirements, but a comprehensive spatio-temporal characterization of callus mineralization along the bone healing process has not been available. Here, we differentiated into three regions within the healing bone and examined eight time points post-osteotomy. We were able to demonstrate a gradual increase in callus mineralization alongside endochondral ossificat

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease with chronic hyperglycemic state, which incidence has been globally rising during the past decades. Besides the well-known diabetic complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy, T1D is characterized also by poor bone health. The reduced bone mineralization, quality and strength lead to vertebral and hip fractures as the most important clinical manifestations. Suppressed bone turnover is the main characteristic of T1D-associated bone disorder.
RESULTS: This is thought to be due to hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia, auto

AIM: Classic metaphyseal fractures are highly suggestive of inflicted injury. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an important differential in infants presenting with unexplained fracture(s), and some argue that classic metaphyseal fractures occur accidentally in children with OI. This study sought to assess the prevalence of classic metaphyseal fractures in children with OI during the first 2 years of life.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective observational cohort study of children with OI less than 2 years of age between 01/01/2010 and 31/12/2021. Radiographs and reports were reviewe
