Stubby prostheses have been used in the habilitation of very small children with bilateral lower limb deficiencies, particularly bilateral above knee limb deficiencies. While we reported on "The Use of Stubbies For the Child with Bilateral Lower Limb Deficiencies" in 1973, the literature has very little except in relation to the geriatric amputee. We have continued since 1973 to use stubbies in the bilateral above knee limb deficient child, as well as in the child with an above knee/below knee combination, with great success in establishing early balance, followed within several months by the

Two hundred and eighty-six patients over the age of 65 (age range 65-102, mean age 82 years), who were hospitalized in geriatric wards, were examined clinically for the presence of sebaceous gland hyperplasia and senile comedones. The degree of solar elastotic change present was scored on a visual analogue scale. The prevalence rate of sebaceous gland hyperplasia and of senile comedones was found to be 26% in each case. Approximately one third of patients had both lesions. Neither of these lesions was related to either the degree of solar elastotic change or the skin type with regard to tannin

The actions of various drugs in an aging organism has a number of characteristics. The major reasons are the age-related shifts of the morphological, biochemical and functional origin that result in a change with age both of drug pharmacodynamics, and drug pharmacokinetics. The important rule of geriatric pharmacology is to prescribe strictly individual reduced dosages of drugs, especially of those to which the organism is the most sensitive ( Chebotarev , 1978). These primarily include cardiac glucosides, narcotic, hypotensive and neuroplegic drugs. The elderly should be prescribed as fewer d

The results of treatment of a group of severely ill and geriatric patients with chronic or subacute subdural hematoma using the twist drill craniostomy (TDC) with closed system drainage are presented. Of the 22 patients selected for this procedure because of the high risk of general anesthesia, 18 had a total removal of the hematoma with the first procecure, 1 required a second TDC, 1 required craniotomy, and the procedure failed in 2 patients. There was no mortality or significant morbidity associated with this procedure performed under local anesthesia, and there were no infections. The abse

In several different populations of wild mice, observed over a 35-month period in laboratory geriatric colonies, a direct correlation was found between the prevalence and titer of spleen complement-fixing gs (p30) antigen and C-type particles in newly trapped healthy mice and a predilection to lymphoma and a hind leg paralytic disease upon aging. Other studies have established the indigenous C-type virus as the essential etiological determinant of both diseases in wild mice. An increased incidence of breast carcinomas, hepatomas, and pulmonary adenomas associated with C-type virus also occurre

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite the growing use of assistive technologies in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia care, adoption remains fragmented because the existing technology acceptance models overlook the relational, cultural, and ethical dimensions. This concept analysis aims to clarify the defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of technology adoption in AD and dementia care.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using Walker and Avant's concept analysis framework, 25 studies from 2015 to 2025 across gerontology, nursing, computer science, and rehabilitation

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is a progressive skeletal muscle disorder associated with adverse clinical outcomes, including functional decline, frailty, and mortality in older adults. Although dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is recommended as the reference method for the assessment of muscle mass, its limited availability restricts widespread clinical implementation. Musculoskeletal ultrasonography (US) has emerged as a promising alternative due to its portability, low cost, and absence of ionizing radiation; however, its validity relative to DXA in older populations remains insufficiently

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Propofol is widely used in clinical anesthesia, but its cardiorespiratory depressive effects may limit its safety in older patients. With the growing number of older adults requiring anesthesia, ciprofol has attracted interest because of its higher potency and relatively mild hemodynamic impact. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of ciprofol compared with propofol in older patients undergoing general anesthesia or painless endoscopy.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science up to 7 Nove

A strong association between frailty and in-hospital delirium in nonsurgical patients has been shown. Physical and cognitive frailties have been associated with decline and dysfunction in the frontal cognitive domains. Risk factors for frailty are similar to risk factors for postoperative delirium (POD). Frailty can be screened and diagnosed by various tools and instruments. Different anesthetic techniques have been studied to decrease the incidence of POD. However, no anesthetic technique has been conclusively proven to decrease the risk of POD. Patients with dementia develop delirium more of

Lymphoma in elderly patients has unique treatment challenges due to baseline co-morbidities, nutrition status, impairment in functional capacities and fitness. While geriatric-specific assessment can be used to tailor treatment decisions, lack of adequate representation of elderly patients in lymphoma clinical trials impairs generalizability. Radiation treatment has traditionally been associated with high response and local control for lymphomas. The volume and dose of radiation in lymphomas has gradually decreased over the decades, which has led to improved compliance and lower toxicities. Th

AIM: Malnutrition is highly prevalent among older subjects, yet no universal method for its identification has been established. This study aimed to evaluate the concurrent and predictive validity of the GLIM criteria in older adults.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in five databases involving older adults (≥60 years). Concurrent validity utilizes reference nutritional assessment tools, while predictive validity focuses on key outcomes, including mortality, hospitalization, and healthcare costs.
RESULTS: The search yielded 683 references. Thirteen hospital-based

BACKGROUND: Populations are ageing globally and Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) are experiencing the fastest rates of demographic change. Few studies have explored the burden of frailty amongst older people in hospital in LMICs, where healthcare services are having to rapidly adapt to align with the needs of older people. This study aimed to measure the prevalence of frailty amongst older people admitted to hospital in Tanzania and to explore their demographic and clinical characteristics.
METHODS: This study had a prospective observational design. Over a six-month period, all adults

INTRODUCTION: Population aging longevity and advances in robotic surgery suggest that increasing numbers of older women having gynaeoncological surgery is likely. Postoperative morbidity and mortality are more common in older than younger women with the age-associated characteristics of multimorbidity and frailty being generally predictive of worse outcome. Priorities that inform treatment decisions change during the life course: older patients often place greater' value on quality-of-life-years gained than on life expectancy following cancer treatments. However, data on post-operative cogniti

Lung cancer has one of the highest morbidity and mortality rates in the world. Frailty is common in many countries and is a major cause of premature functional decline and premature death in older adults, and may affect the treatment and prognosis of lung cancer patients. To investigate the predictive value of frailty at diagnosis on all-cause mortality in lung cancer patients, this study retrospectively collected and analysed clinical information on lung cancer patients from 2015-2018. A total of 1667 patients with primary lung cancer were finally included in this study. The median follow-up

BACKGROUND: The trajectory of frailty and intrinsic capacity (IC) often overlap in older adults. Longitudinal analyses of transitions of frailty and IC, and their associations with incident functional decline are limited. The present study aimed to identify transitions of frailty status and IC, and explore associations between transitions of frailty and IC, and future disability among community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: In the West China and Aging Trend Study, 808 participants aged ≥ 60 years completed baseline and three years follow-up (frailty, IC and disability assessments). Physical

Frailty is a clinical presentation resulting from age-related cumulative declines in several physiological systems. The aim of this study was to adapt the concept of frailty to the domestic dog, as a model for frailty research, by characterizing a 5-criterion frailty phenotype using objective measurement, and to investigate its independent association with death. A prospective cohort including 80 Labrador and Golden Retriever dogs aged 9 years or older was conducted between March 2015 and July 2020. An adapted frailty phenotype was defined according to the presence of 5 criteria (weakness, slo

The SENIOR study followed a cohort of older people living in nursing homes for 8 years and examined their adverse health events. The results were analysed after 1, 3 and 8 years to identify predictive factors and improve care. After 1 year, residents with poorer motor and muscle function had a higher incidence of adverse health events such as death and falls. Sarcopenia predicted mortality, while poor physical performance was associated with falls. At 3 years, poor nutritional status and poor balance were important predictors of mortality, falls and loss of independence. At 8 years, younger ag

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between frailty, sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and disease severity of older adults with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). A total of 57 hospitalized patients ≥60 years with ACS were assessed for frailty through the Tilburg Frailty Indicator. Disease severity was assessed by the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events, by the maximum troponin level, and by the number of severely obstructed coronary arteries. The relationship between variables was assessed by Mann Whitney's test, Pearson's chi-square test, likelihood-ratio test, Fishe
