INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumors of tendon sheath (GCTTS) are benign soft-tissue lesions commonly affecting the digits, which occasionally cause pressure atrophy of an adjoining bone; but perforating the cortex to expand into the medullary canal is quite uncommon. We report such a case of suspected recurrent ganglion cyst with eventually manifested as a GCTTS with an intra-osseous involvement of the capitate and hamate bone.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old lady had been diagnosed as a case of recurrent ganglion cyst of the dorsum of the left wrist - 6 years ago and 4 years ago - both of which

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis is caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum and is highly lethal in humans and dogs if left untreated. The frequency of this parasite and associated histological changes in the pancreas of dogs are poorly studied. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the frequency of detection and load of amastigotes in the pancreas of L. infantum-seropositive dogs and to identify the clinical signs and histological changes associated with parasitism of this organ.
METHODS: One hundred forty-three dogs from an endemic area in Brazil that teste

BACKGROUND: Posterior instability is less common than anterior instability but can be seen in contact athletes and posttraumatically. Distal tibial allograft reconstruction for glenoid bone loss was first described by Provencher and colleagues in 2009 and an arthroscopic technique for posterior glenoid reconstruction using a distal tibial allograft was later described by Gupta et al in 2013.
INDICATIONS: The primary indications for posterior distal tibial allograft include the failure of conservative management, recurrent instability after an arthroscopic stabilization, or glenoid bone loss >

BACKGROUND: Vascularized composite allotransplantation opens new possibilities in reconstructive transplantation such as hand or face transplants. Lifelong immunosuppression and its side-effects are the main drawbacks of this procedure. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have clinically useful immunomodulatory effects and may be able to reduce the burden of chronic immunosuppression. Herein, we assess and compare characteristics and immunomodulatory capacities of bone marrow- and adipose tissue-derived MSCs isolated from the same human individual across defined human leukocyte antigen (HLA) barrier

Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a relatively common chronic inflammatory joint disorder, with a prevalence of about 0.2-0.5% worldwide. The primary target of the pathological process is the enthesis, where tendons and ligaments attach to underlying bone. These insertion sites are hotspots of bone formation (enthesophytes), which can lead to ankylosis. Unfortunately, the mechanisms causing the onset and progression of entheseal ossification remain largely unknown. Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), a lipid generated after sphingosine phosphorylation by sphingosine kinases 1 and 2 (SK1/2), plays importan

Introduction Fracture of the scaphoid bone is the most common fracture of the carpus. However, the fracture union occurs late or may not heal. Sometimes, fracture healing requires prolong immobilization. Because of potential for joint stiffness, muscle atrophy, or the inability to use the hand during and after prolonged immobilization, there is great incentive to develop therapies that will accelerate bone healing and allow a quick return to work. To date, the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on scaphoid fracture has not been studied. We aimed to assess the effect of intra-articular PRP in

BACKGROUND:: The periarticular medial clavicle fracture is a rare injury and can be treated conservatively in the majority of cases. However, up to 8% of the patients develop symptomatic nonunion, and fracture dislocation correlates with the number of poor functional results. Operative treatment may be beneficial in these cases. Studies with large series of operated patients are still missing. METHODS:: We investigated 10 patients with operative treatment of periarticular medial clavicle fractures. Preoperative X-ray or computed tomography scan was obtained, and follow-up assessment was perfor

The objective of this study was to evaluate the benefits of intra-operative ultrasonic guidance in the management of isolated nasal bone fractures. A prospective, randomized, controlled, double blinded study was designed. Sixty-eight patients who had isolated fracture nose were treated by either a simple closed reduction or by ultrasound-guided reduction (34 patients each) with a follow up for an average of 4.5 and 5.5 months, respectively. Post-traumatic and post-reduction nasal profiles were compared (by blinded photographer), and patient's satisfaction was analyzed after reduction in both g

OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of osteoarthritis (OA) on bone density measurements and whether OA at one site is associated with OA at other sites.
METHODS: Nonrandomized, cross sectional observational study; secondary analysis of a general population database. Sixty-four subjects derived from a longitudinal study of long distance runners and community controls had a complete peripheral radiographic evaluation for osteoarthritic changes in hands, knees, and lumbar spine. Forty-four of these were studied in 1984 with quantitative computed tomography (QCT) of L1, and 54 were studied in 1

The historical background to the disorder is unfolded. It was originally regarded as a dermatological curiosity, and later sarcoidosis was recognized as a disorder diffusely involving most tissues of the body. Clinical syndromes described include those presenting to the dermatologist, ophthalmologist, chest physician and radiologist, gastroenterologist and neurologist. Tissues commonly involved are lungs, lymph nodes, eyes, skin and bone in that order of frequency. Granulomatous uveitis in the presence of skin lesions should always arouse the suspicion of sarcoidosis; ocular and bone involveme

The presence of anomalous muscles in the hand are present in around 22-35% of individuals, leading to potential clinical implications. During a routine cadaveric dissection of a 72 year old male, a unique hypothenar muscle variant was identified: the pisi-palmaris muscle. Detailed dissection and literature review determined the origin, insertion, and relationships of the muscle. The pisi-palmaris originated from the pisiform bone, deep to the tendon of the flexor carpi ulnaris and the volar carpal ligament, and inserted onto the transverse carpal ligament, merging with fibers of the abductor a

Nodular fasciitis is a benign reactive fibroproliferative lesion that is exceedingly rare within the wrist and hand, particularly when involving bone. Its rapid growth and clinical presentation can often mimic sarcomas or metastatic disease, creating a significant diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 59-year-old male patient with a history of multiple malignancies who presented with a rapidly enlarging dorsal wrist mass. Advanced imaging revealed a large lesion eroding the carpus, raising significant concern for metastasis. However, histopathologic evaluation confirmed nodular fasciit

Chondromas are rare benign cartilaginous tumours, typically arising in the small bones of the hands and feet. Laryngeal chondromas are exceptionally uncommon and account for a very small proportion of head and neck neoplasms. We present a case of a 72-year-old male referred with a painless, slowly enlarging right-sided neck mass. Multimodal imaging, including ultrasound, CT, and MRI, revealed a well-circumscribed lesion with internal calcification arising from the thyroid cartilage. Differential diagnoses included chondroma and low-grade chondrosarcoma. Initial cytological assessment was incon

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumors of the bone (GCTB) are challenging neoplasms, particularly in the proximal humerus.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 46-year-old male with proximal humerus GCTB who was managed with extended curettage, proximal humerus internal locking system (PHILOS) plating, and fibular strut grafting. The patient presented with shoulder pain and restricted movement. Imaging revealed a lytic lesion in the metaphyseal-epiphyseal region, and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. Extended curettage was performed using the deltopectoral approach, followed by cryotherapy and recon

Metastatic melanoma is the most life-threatening skin cancer due to its significant tendency to metastasize and its substantial resistance to therapeutic interventions. Melanomas spread aggressively, particularly to lymph nodes, the brain, and lungs, and can also involve the adrenal gland, liver, bones, and small intestine. Metastasis to the endometrium is exceedingly rare, with only a handful of documented cases. Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is an excellent modality for detecting metastases. A meta-analysis showed that PET/CT has superior

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common renal tumor, with lung, bone, and liver being the primary sites of metastasis. Thyroid metastasis, on the other hand, is relatively uncommon. Metastatic tumors in the thyroid gland typically manifest as multiple or isolated nodules, which can be easily overlooked due to the lack of specific clinical and imaging features. However, the identification of thyroid metastasis suggests the presence of systemic metastasis and is indicative of a poor prognosis for patients. In this paper, we present two cases of thyroid metastasis following nephrectomy, wit

Body composition has recently been attracting people's attention, not only from a cosmetic standpoint but also from the perspective of health and longevity. The body is classified into three components: fat, bone, and lean soft tissue, and it is common to see an increase in body fat and a decrease in total body muscle mass with aging. Aging-related loss of muscle mass and muscle function is referred to as primary sarcopenia, while sarcopenia caused by disease-specific conditions is referred to as secondary sarcopenia. On the other hand, the liver-muscle axis has been attracting attention in re
