Reduced-size hepatic transplantation (RSHT) was developed to alleviate the mortality resulting from the scarcity of suitable cadaveric grafts. RSHT consists of various techniques that reduce a full liver to a smaller size. These techniques include reduced-size cadaveric liver transplantation (RLT), split liver transplantation (SLT), and living-related liver transplantation (LRLT). RLT utilizes part of a liver, while the rest is discarded; in SLT, the whole liver is used for two recipients after bipartition; and in LRLT, a portion of the liver retrieved from a living donor is transplanted. Scrub typhus is an acute febrile illness that generally causes non-specific symptoms and signs of which fever is the most common. It is one … lactate dehydrogenase and 44.7% for serum bilirubin. Six patients presented with a picture of true hepatitis similar to acute viral hepatitis. The results indicate that hepatocellular damage does occur in scrub typhus, and is perhaps, more common than previously realized. We recommend that the differential diagnosis of patients from high-risk groups and en …

A 64-year-old man with hepatic actinomycosis presented with several months of weight loss and poor appetite. However, no fever was noted before admission. Findings on abdominal sonography and computed tomography scan were suggestive of hepatocellular carcinoma. A sono-guided percutaneous liver biopsy specimen demonstrated only chronic fibrosing inflammation. Therefore, laparotomy was performed and the diagnosis of hepatic actinomycosis was established after surgical resection. The patient was then successfully treated. The fact that hepatic actinomycosis may be very similar to hepatocellular c

The principles of generation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are resumed by briefly explaining the effects of an external magnetic field (EMF) on hydrogen nuclei and of pulses of radiofrequency (RF) radiation. The latter creates a resonant effect, and the same nuclei, moved from the external field axis, when RF pulse is stopped, will "relax" to their original alignment in the magnetic field and in so doing radiate the absorbed energy to their surroundings. This energy provides a signal that can be detected and spatially resolved by the receiver coil wrapped around the patient, through a co

Thirty one children with typhoid fever aged 2 months to 12 years and blood culture positive for multidrug resistant S. typhi were prospectively studied for their hepatic functions at the time of hospitalization and 2-3 weeks after completion of antibiotic therapy. Hepatic manifestations included hepatomegaly (51.6%); jaundice (16.1%); raised levels of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) (61.3%), serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) (48.4%), alkaline phosphatase (AP) (22.6%) and serum bilirubin (SB) (6.1%); reduced levels of serum albumin (SA) (41.9%); prolonged prothrombin tim

The authors present their experience with resection of the liver in children. In 1986-1993 they performed a total of 34 major resections of the liver. The mean age of the operated children was 4 years and 5 months, the youngest patient was operated at the age of 4 days and the oldest one at the age of 17 years. The group was divided into two time periods which are compared, because in 1990 the authors changed their surgical tactics and technique and also the procedure used for general anaesthesia. During the first period/1986-1989/they made 12 resections of the liver and during the second peri

Thirty-five patients with hepatic abscesses were treated at our institution during an 8-year period. Twenty-nine patients had bacterial abscesses, and six patients had amoebic abscesses. The patients were admitted with fever (95%), right upper quadrant pain (63%), and nausea and vomiting (40%) as the most common symptoms. Eleven patients had some inciting cause for the abscess formation; the remaining 18 bacterial abscesses were cryptogenic. The primary abnormal test results were leukocytosis (91%) and liver enzyme elevations (80%). All patients with amoebic abscesses were serologically positi

Hepatic adenoma is an infrequent evenience, not wellknown till oral contraceptive diffusion in the 60s. The lesion may also be associated to the use of androgenic steroids, and to both type I and type III glycogen storage disease. Hepatic adenoma may be single or, more rarely, multiple. Recently the term of multiple adenomatosis has been adopted for the cases in which ten hepatic adenomas or more are found in a single liver. In this report, a case of hepatic adenoma involving a patient with no risk factors for such lesion as well as diagnosis and therapy are illustrated.

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative and granulomatous disease characterized histologically by sulfur granules with extensive necrosis, fibrosis and sinus formation. Depending on the site of primary infection, actinomycosis is generally classified as cervicofacial, thoracic and abdominal type. The liver is known to be the primary site of infection in 15% with abdominal actinomycosis. The authors have experienced a case of liver abscess in a 24-year-old male. The sono-guided aspiration biopsy revealed findings of infiltration of neutrophils and characteristics sulfur granules by light microsc

Aprindine is a very effective antiarrhythmic agent with a narrow therapeutic ratio. We report a patient who suffered from granulomatous hepatitis probably due to the administration of aprindine. Evidence of hepatitis appeared within 6 weeks of initiating aprindine therapy and resolved rapidly when the drug was withdrawn. Six months later, fibrosis but no granulomata were found in the expanded portal tracts. Our observations suggest that granulomatous hepatitis can occur during aprindine therapy.
