This study examined history of arrest and victimization in an urban community sample of severely mentally ill adults. Adults (n = 308) were consented and interviewed in one of four short-term residential treatment facilities in San Francisco. Nearly three quarters (71.4%) had been arrested at some time in their lives, 28.2% of whom had been arrested in the past 6 months. Krabbe disease, also known as globoid cell leukodystrophy, is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency of a lysosomal enzyme, galactocerebrosidase. This defect prevents normal turnover of the galactolipids and results in progressive demyelination. In the infantile form, symptoms typically present at 3 to 6 months of age with subsequent neurologic deterioration. Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) are asymptomatic, pre-malignant disorders characterized by monoclonal plasma cell proliferation in the bone marrow and absence of end-organ damage. Recent advances in the pathogenesis, natural history, and prognosis of MGUS and SMM are reviewed. A new risk stratification system to determine the prognosis of MGUS using the size and type of M protein, and the serum free light chain assay is discussed.

We report two siblings with congenital generalized hypertrichosis and distinctive facial appearance consistent with the dysmorphic facial features described in Ambras syndrome. The patients were born to non-consanguineous, phenotypically normal parents. This is the first report of affected siblings and could be explained by either autosomal recessive inheritance or by germline mosaicism for an autosomal dominant gene. We compared the phenotype of our patients to descriptions of reported cases and discuss phenotypic variability.

Researchers examined the mean sum scores of 15 semantic differential scales to specify the evaluative index assigned to the term condom by 173 undergraduate students at a large public university. Of interest was whether evaluative indices were different for men and women, and for condom ever-users versus never-users. There was no sex difference in semantic evaluation of condom.
