Acute Psychosis and the Risk of Motor Vehicle Crash: Psychose aiguë et risque d'accident de la route.

BackgroundLimited evidence guides fitness-to-drive decision-making following an episode of acute psychosis.MethodWe used population-based administrative health and driving data from British Columbia, Canada, to identify all police-attended motor vehicle crashes between 2000 and 2016. Drivers were considered exposed if a hospitalization for acute psychosis ended in the 6-week interval prior to the crash. We assessed the association between psychosis and crashes using a case-crossover design that controls for relatively fixed individual characteristics like personality and routine driving habits

Pre-stroke dementia and in-hospital outcomes in the Chinese Stroke Center Alliance.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the impact of prevalent dementia on in-hospital outcomes of patients with incident stroke in China. Using data from the Chinese Stroke Center Alliance (CSCA), we aim to quantify the prevalence of pre-stroke dementia and whether this group is at higher risk of adverse in-hospital outcomes compared to those without pre-stroke dementia. METHODS: We used multivariable logistic regression models to assess the associations between pre-stroke dementia and ambulation by day 2, in-hospital mortality, in-hospital complications, and being discharged home. Covariates inc

How the COVID-19 Pandemic Impacted Neurological Hospital Admissions in Germany: A Retrospective Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on health care. Shifts in inpatient and outpatient case numbers and morbidity have been quantified in other medical specialties (e.g., oncology and psychiatry). Such an analysis is lacking in neurological cases. Thus, we performed an anonymized, retrospective, multicenter analysis of administrative data from a network of 86 hospitals in Germany. METHODS: Over 350,000 neurological cases admitted between January 2019 and December 2022 were included. The main outcome measures were (1) deficit in inpatient hospital admissions during the p

Effect of In utero Exposure to Air Pollution on Adulthood Hospitalizations.

Empirical analyses have demonstrated that individuals exposed to severe air pollution in utero have worse health outcomes during childhood. However, there is little evidence on the long-term health impacts of air pollution exposure. The objective of this paper is to estimate the effect of in utero exposure to the Great London Smog of 1952 (GLS) on five health outcomes identified through a scoping review to be those most likely affected: respiratory, circulatory, neoplasms, mental health, and nervous system conditions. We use the GLS, an extreme air pollution event in December 1952, as a quasi-

The effect of dexmedetomidine on acute kidney injury after elective major abdominal surgery : a retrospective single-center propensity score matched study.

BACKGROUND: Major abdominal surgery is a kind of high-risk surgery type for postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) among non-cardiac surgeries. Despite dexmedetomidine exerts significant renal protective effects in cardiac surgeries and animal studies, whether it is associated with a lower incidence of AKI in major abdominal surgeries remains unclear. METHODS: From January 2019 to July 2021, patients undergoing elective major abdominal surgery in West China Hospital were enrolled. Participants were divided into two groups based on exposure to continuous intravenous dexmedetomidine: the Dex g
