Stoppage rules and genetic studies of autism.

Parents may respond in various ways to the birth of a seriously affected child. They may, for example, decide not to have any more children or to have one more child and then stop. These various responses are called "stoppage rules" in the genetic literature. Where stoppage rules are operative, the order in which affected and nonaffected children are born is disturbed in definite ways. The present paper shows that stoppage rules are at work in a recently reported data set consisting of 46 multiplex families of childhood autism and, as a consequence, that the segregation ratio was underestimate

Agoraphobia and parental bereavement.

The prevalence of parental bereavement was determined in 50 married female outpatients with a DSM-III diagnosis of agoraphobia and in a control group of married female outpatients diagnosed as having non-psychotic psychiatric disorders other than agoraphobia. The two groups were matched for age and overall severity of psychiatric symptoms. Compared with the general population, the patient control group reported a statistically significant excess of parental, but not maternal, bereavement. The agoraphobic group was significantly younger than the control group at the time of parental loss. These

Precautionary measures for the wise traveler. Some common hazards.

Several risks can be posed by travel, even when the stay is not protracted nor the destination exotic. Air travelers should consider the potential problems associated with decreased cabin pressure, hypoxia, and circadian dysrhythmia, problems that can contraindicate flying for some. Motion sickness can affect those traveling by air, sea, or land; medications are available to combat the symptoms, and several other remedies such as changing visual stimuli are also worth trying. Persons staying in hotels, particularly high rises, should review several general guidelines for defensive action in ca

Opium administration to infants in Peshawar region of Pakistan.

Use of opium for sedating infants in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan causes a grave public health problem. Among the infants hospitalized for opium overdosage, 22 were studied in detail, and their major clinical picture is presented in this paper. The effect of opium use on the nutritional status of these infants, or the relation of infant opium use to addiction in adult life, have not been assessed. It is, however, pointed out that opium overdosage of infants contributed to infant mortality. Despite emergency treatment, the lethality rate of opium overdosed infants was 40 per cen

Correlation between dental maturity, height development and sexual maturation in normal girls.

The correlation between the dental maturity and the different measures of sexual development, i.e. the age at menarche, the ages at breast and pubic hair development, and the age of peak height velocity, was found to be low in healthy girls. Multiple regression analyses between the predictors height and growth rate at the chronological age of a certain stage of the dental development and each of the predictands age at menarche, breast development, and age of peak height velocity improved the residual standard deviation significantly in comparison with the standard deviation of the distribution

Nutrition of elderly men living alone. I. Intakes of energy and nutrients.

The energy and nutrient intakes of 35 men aged 70 years and over, living alone at home, were studied using five-day records. The mean energy intake was 1628 (SD 545) kcal/day. Protein and calcium intakes were generally adequate, but 60% of the old men took less than 10mg of iron per day. Intakes of vitamin C were below 15 mg/day in 34%. Thirty-four percent took less than 0.8 mg thiamine daily. Intakes of vitamin A and riboflavin were, in general, adequate, except for a small number of subjects. It is concluded that about one-third of the men had deficient vitamin C or thiamine intakes.

Kinetic and structural characterization of a typical two-cysteine peroxiredoxin from Leptospira interrogans exhibiting redox sensitivity.

Little is known about the mechanisms by which Leptospira interrogans, the causative agent of leptospirosis, copes with oxidative stress at the time it establishes persistent infection within its human host. We report the molecular cloning of a gene encoding a 2-Cys peroxiredoxin (LinAhpC) from this bacterium. After bioinformatic analysis we found that LinAhpC contains the characteristic GGIG and YF motifs present in peroxiredoxins that are sensitive to overoxidation (mainly eukaryotic proteins). These motifs are absent in insensitive prokaryotic enzymes. Recombinant LinAhpC showed activity as

Primary amenorrhea in anorexia nervosa: impact on characteristic masculine and feminine traits.

Animal studies indicate that gonadal hormones at puberty have an effect on the development of masculine and feminine traits. However, it is unknown whether similar processes occur in humans. We examined whether women with anorexia nervosa (AN), who often experience primary amenorrhea, exhibit attenuated feminization in their psychological characteristics in adulthood due to the decrease/absence of gonadal hormones at puberty. Women with AN were compared on a number of psychological characteristics using general linear models on the basis of the presence/absence of primary amenorrhea. Although

[Ventral prolapse of the embryo: case report].

OBJECTIVE: A pathologic human embryo 3 mm long affected by a "ventral prolaps" was present in a product of conception implanted within the Fallopian tube. The gestational age was 7 weeks. The malformation was characterized by a deep protrusion of the embryonal body (containing the medullary tube and the notochord adherent to the ceiling of the yolk sac) through the umbilical ring of the germ disc delineated by ectoderm covered mesenchymal streaks with primordia of the umbilical veins. Similar two affected embryos were depicted by Kollmann in his Handatlas in 1907, but were considered normal.

The effect of growth hormone on craniofacial growth and dental maturation in Turner syndrome.

Serial cephalometric and panoramic radiographs from a mixed longitudinal group of 28 subjects with Turner syndrome (TS), age 4.4-19.0 years, were evaluated for annualized growth increments of the craniofacial complex and dental development and were compared with a longitudinal control group from the Burlington growth study. The short and retrognathic face characteristic of the syndrome was due largely to the increased cranial base angle, decreased posterior face height, and decreased mandibular length, all of which were significantly different from the controls. Although increases in statural

Laryngeal reflexomyographic responses in rabbits: a neurolaryngological study of glottal movement.

The role of the laryngeal reflex in glottal movement has been reported, but its mechanism remains unclear. To further investigate the neurophysiological characteristics of glottal movement, we recorded the laryngeal reflexomyographic responses (LRMRs) to electrical stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) in rabbits. The procedure involved simultaneous recording of the LRMRs from the thyroarytenoid muscles by means of bipolar hooked wire electrodes after electrical stimulation to the SLN. The results demonstrated characteristic patterns of the responses, consisting of R1 and R2, simil

Advances in the understanding of Coxiella burnetii infection in Japan.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by a rickettsia Coxiella burnetii. Since its first description in 1937, the disease has been found to be present in most countries of the world. Serological evidences of Q fever in humans and coxiellosis in animals were reported in Japan in the 1950s, however, systematic studies of the disease did not begin until the report of isolation of C. burnetii from an acute Q fever patient in 1989. In addition to the extensive information about epidemiology of the disease, the understanding of Japanese isolates of C. burnetii is increasing rapidly in recent years. I
