Phenotype and function of IL-10 producing NK cells in individuals with malaria experience.

Plasmodium falciparum infection can trigger high levels of inflammation that lead to fever and sometimes severe disease. People living in malaria-endemic areas gradually develop resistance to symptomatic malaria and control both parasite numbers and the inflammatory response. We previously found that adaptive natural killer (NK) cells correlate with reduced parasite load and protection from symptoms. We also previously found that murine NK cell production of IL-10 can protect mice from experimental cerebral malaria. Human NK cells can also secrete IL-10, but it was unknown what NK cell subsets

Obesity is associated with incident chronic kidney disease in individuals with normal renal function.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Obesity has known to be a modifiable risk factor associated with worse outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD), but few studies have examined the impact of obesity on CKD incidence in the general population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) as predictors of incident CKD and to evaluate the impact of weight reduction on CKD prevention. METHODS: A total of 2,711 participants from a community-based cohort with normal renal function were prospectively analyzed. Among participants with obesity, we analyzed

Self-Transcendence as a Risk and Resilience Factor in Individuals at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis.

AIM: Self-transcendence is a personality feature and psychological resource that involves feelings of connectedness with the universe, all of humanity, and the individual self. Self-transcendence has been positively associated with both positive psychotic symptoms and clinical high risk for developing psychosis status, but studies reporting these findings focus solely on the connectedness-with-universe aspect of self-transcendence. The broader self-transcendence literature, which also includes connection with humanity and oneself, robustly supports self-transcendence as an indicator of well-be

Individualized Homeopathic Treatment for Persistent Insomnia and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Case Report.

Insomnia is a widespread disease that tends to be associated with other problems, like anxiety. The most frequent anxiety disorder is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which is characterized by excessive worrying about everyday situations. Medications for insomnia and anxiety can have adverse reactions and the latter may be ineffective in up to 30% of patients. Here we present a case report of a 27-year-old male patient who suffered from persistent insomnia with comorbid GAD and schizophreniform disorder. Initially, he was taking alprazolam, paroxetine, and risperidone, which had a less-than

Biological brain age and resilience in cognitively unimpaired 70-year-old individuals.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the associations of brain age gap (BAG)-a biological marker of brain resilience-with life exposures, neuroimaging measures, biological processes, and cognitive function. METHODS: We derived BAG by subtracting predicted brain age from chronological age in 739 septuagenarians without dementia or neurological disorders. Robust linear regression models assessed BAG associations with life exposures, plasma inflammatory and metabolic biomarkers, magnetic resonance imaging, and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers of neurodegeneration and vascular brain injury, and co

Sexual violence research across levels of the social ecology: from the individual to the societal.

Sexual violence is a common and harmful form of trauma. In this article collection, EJPT features research on sexual violence spanning levels of the social ecology. First, we discuss the individual-level studies in this collection, which report on sexual violence prevalence, impact, prevention, and intervention. These papers highlight best practices for assessing sexual assault (i.e., via behaviorally-specific questionnaires), indicate the substantial and enduring mental health effects of sexual violence, and suggest that a number of prevention and intervention strategies are feasible and prom

Neuromelanin levels in individuals with substance use disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dopamine's role in addiction has been extensively studied, revealing disruptions in its functioning throughout all addiction stages. Neuromelanin in the substantia nigra (SN) may reflect dopamine auto-oxidation, and can be quantified using neuromelaninsensitive magnetic resonance imaging (neuromelanin-MRI) in a non-invasive manner. In this pre-registered systematic review, we assess the current body of evidence related to neuromelanin levels in substance use disorders, using both post-mortem and MRI examinations. The systematic search identified 10 relevant articles, primarily focusing on the s

Although most accounts criticizing the concept of disease as value-laden do not supply a positive element, disability st …

Effects of Medicare Eligibility at Age 65 Among Individuals With and Without Functional Disability.

BACKGROUND: Medicare coverage at age 65 improves access to and use of care and alleviates financial hardship for the general population. However, less is known whether the effects differ between individuals without and with functional disability. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of Medicare eligibility at age 65 on health insurance coverage, financial burden of care, and access to care among individuals without and with functional disability. DESIGN: We used a regression discontinuity design, which exploits the discontinuity in eligibility for Medicare at age 65 and compares individuals ju

Individualized prevention of proton pump inhibitor related adverse events by risk stratification.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used for gastric acid-related disorders, but their safety profile and risk stratification for high-burden diseases need further investigation. Analyzing over 2 million participants from five prospective cohorts from the US, the UK, and China, we found that PPI use correlated with increased risk of 15 leading global diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and chronic kidney disease. These associations showed dose-response relationships and consistency across different PPI types. PPI-related absolute risks increased w

Interventional Radiology for Bleeding Ectopic Varices: Individualized Approach Based on Vascular Anatomy.

Ectopic varices are rare but potentially life-threatening conditions usually resulting from a combination of global portal hypertension and local occlusive components. As imaging, innovative devices, and interventional radiologic techniques evolve and are more widely adopted, interventional radiology is becoming essential in the management of ectopic varices. The interventional radiologist starts by diagnosing the underlying causes of portal hypertension and evaluating the afferent and efferent veins of ectopic varices with CT. If decompensated portal hypertension is causing ectopic varices, p

"Sticky" thinking disrupts decision making for individuals with a tendency toward worry and depression.

Depressed individuals are commonly known to suffer from low mood. Less attention is paid to their decision-making deficiencies, consisting of indecisiveness and biased judgments. Many theories attempt to explain these impairments by focusing on reduced sensitivity to reward and punishment or biased information processing. Beyond these accounts, the present study explores another scenario, namely, whether the occurrence of sticky thinking-the occurrence of thoughts that are difficult to disengage from-could be a cause for the disruption of the decision-making process in individuals with depress

Association of Neurogranin and BACE1 With Clinical Cognitive Decline in Individuals With Subjective Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: CSF biomarkers have immense diagnostic and prognostic potential for Alzheimer disease (AD). However, AD is still diagnosed relatively late in the disease process, sometimes even years after the initial manifestation of cognitive symptoms. Thus, further identification of biomarkers is required to detect related pathology in the preclinical stage and predict cognitive decline. Our study aimed to assess the association of neurogranin and β-site amyloid precursor protein-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) with cognitive decline in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SC

Against the odds: exploring individuals' pushback mechanisms against commercialized football gambling.

INTRODUCTION: The need for money, the pursuit of pleasure, and the liberalized access to gambling have been documented in several pieces of literature as the drivers of gambling. Such drivers are predicated on commercialized gambling, leading to the growth of the gambling industry and constituting a structural influence that normalizes the activity among young people. METHODS: Through a qualitative inquiry, this study investigates the social agentic factors of individuals who are susceptible to gambling. Fifteen non-gamblers were recruited across three commercial cities in Africa, namely Nair

Exposure-Response Efficacy Modeling to Support Trofinetide Dosing in Individuals with Rett Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Trofinetide was recently approved for the treatment of Rett syndrome (RTT) on the basis of the efficacy and safety findings of the phase 3 LAVENDER study, which used a body weight-based dosing regimen. Exposure-response (E-R) efficacy modeling was used to characterize relationships between trofinetide exposure measures (maximum drug concentration and area under the concentration-time curve for the dosing interval of 0-12 h [AUC0-12]) and efficacy endpoints in RTT clinical studies to support the trofinetide dosing regimen. METHODS: Efficacy endpoints were modeled using trofinetid

Cholelithiasis prevalence and risk factors in individuals with severe or profound intellectual and motor disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and risk factors of cholelithiasis in individuals with severe or profound intellectual and motor disabilities (SPIMD) are poorly characterised. Thus, we aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk determinants of cholelithiasis in a cohort with SPIMD under medical care in a residential facility. METHODS: We categorised 84 patients in a residential hospital for persons with SPIMD into groups: those with (Group CL) and without (Group N) cholelithiasis. Gallstones were detected via computed tomography, ultrasonography or both. We evaluated gastrostomy status, nutritio
