INTRODUCTION: Over half of marriages are consanguineous in some countries, and about 10 % of children worldwide have consanguineous parents. Perceived benefits of consanguineous marriage (CM) include preservation of tradition, stronger family ties, financial advantages, and bride protection. Potential harms include autosomal recessive disorders, complex congenital malformations, stillbirths, postnatal mortality. There have been no population-based data published on frequency of CM in Ireland since 1970.

BACKGROUND: Over 80 % of bariatric surgical patients are women with obesity in their reproductive years. Obesity adversely affects fertility; the rapid weight loss following bariatric surgery can increase fecundity. Current guidelines recommend avoiding pregnancy for up to 24 months following surgery, but little is known about current contraceptive care of women who undergo bariatric surgery. BACKGROUND: Six recent randomised control trials (RCTs) have suggested that supervised injectable heroin (SIH) can be effective in patients who persist in street heroin use during methadone treatment. However, short-term randomised control trials have limitations in assessing the effectiveness of treatments for addictive disorders, which are chronic and relapsing disorders of motivation. This study examined the role of crisis advice appearing in US news coverage of the 2001 anthrax attacks. Coverage of any crisis can spark public outrage, including fear, speculation, and contradictory or confusing evidence, especially when the stories do not contain practical advice. OBJECTIVES: Partial cricotracheal resection (PCTR) is widely accepted for treating severe paediatric laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS). However, it remains limited to a few experienced centres.
