Could Alcohol Abuse and Dependence on Junk Foods Inducing Obesity and/or Illicit Drug Use Represent Danger to Liver in Young People with Altered Psychological/Relational Spheres or Emotional Problems?

Recent data show that young people, mainly due to the pressure of some risk factors or due to disrupted interpersonal relationships, utilise greater reward value and display greater sensitivity to the reinforcing properties of "pleasurable stimuli", specifically in those situations in which an enhanced dopamine release is present. Alcoholic beverages, foods rich in sugar and fat, and illicit drug use are pleasurable feelings associated with rewards. Research shows that there is a link between substance abuse and obesity in brain functioning. Still, alcohol excess is central in leading to obesi…

Unpacking Sleep and Suicide in Older Adults in a Combined Online Sample.

OBJECTIVE: Duration of insomnia symptoms and nightmares are related to suicidal risk in young adults independent of current symptoms of insomnia, nightmares, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. However, this relation has yet to be examined among older adults, despite older adults being at higher risk of suicidal behavior. Further, the current study aims to replicate previous research among younger adults showing that insomnia symptoms and nightmares are associated with suicide risk independent of the interpersonal psychological theory of suicide (IPTS). METHODS: The present study utilized 167 part

Menopause and sexual desire: the role of testosterone.

The present short review underlines the role of testosterone (T) in the motivational and satisfaction components of women's sexuality and critically discusses the strategies to treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), a condition of low desire associated with personal and/or interpersonal difficulties, which is more common in surgical menopausal women. There are multiple ways androgens target the brain regions (hypothalamic, limbic and cortical) involved in sexual function and behaviour. Even though circulating available androgens have been implicated in several domains of sexual respon

Frontal release signs among patients with schizophrenia, their first-degree biological relatives, and non-psychiatric controls.

BACKGROUND: Frontal release signs (FRS) are a subset of neurological soft signs that are overrepresented among patients with schizophrenia and their unaffected relatives and may be correlated with neuropsychological functioning and chronicity of illness. This study sought to explore FRS and their associations with verbal memory and symptoms of schizophrenia in an African American sample of patients, and FRS and their associations with verbal memory and schizotypal features among first-degree relatives and non-psychiatric controls. METHOD: FRS, verbal memory, schizophrenia symptoms (in patient

Homeless shelter users in the postdeinstitutionalization era.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the psychiatric symptomatology and mental health service needs of homeless shelter users in Calgary, Alberta. Data were collected as part of a broad-based community action initiative designed to reduce the problem of homelessness. METHODS: A semistructured interview was conducted with a representative sample of 250 emergency shelter users. Mental health problems were measured through self-reports of 9 psychiatric symptoms known to be related to illnesses prevalent among homeless populations (depression, anxiety, and psychoses). The CAGE alcohol screen was also used. RE

Updated Freudian drive theory: childhood trauma, epigenetics, serotonin and beta endorphin.

Sigmund Freud developed Drive Theory from clinical observations and proposed that a limited set of basic drives, including hunger, thirst, sleep, sexuality, and attachment, contributes to psychological stability. Modern reinterpretations allow these drives to be discussed alongside neurobiological regulation, including serotonergic and opioidergic signalling, which are relevant to depressive disorders. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors remain a common first line pharmacological option, yet treatment response varies, and simplified deficiency accounts are debated in the current literature

Physiological reactivity in response to a fear-induced virtual reality experience: Associations with psychopathic traits.

Despite the longstanding discussion around the link between psychopathy and fearlessness, few studies have explicitly tested this association, and results have been mixed. This may be due, in part, to the lack of specificity in fear assessment. Further, the relation between psychopathy and fear may be better understood using the two-factor model because, in theory, fear has opposing associations with interpersonal-affective (Factor 1) and impulsive-antisocial (Factor 2) traits. The present study aimed to test if the two factors of psychopathy are deferentially related to fear reactivity. To ex

Non-technical skills in the management of endoscopic adverse events.

Adverse events are an inherent risk of performing endoscopic procedures. Although the rate of serious adverse events during routine endoscopic procedures is relatively low, most gastroenterologists will encounter at least one significant adverse event during their careers. Traditional endoscopic training largely focuses on teaching the technical management of adverse events with less emphasis on the cognitive and interpersonal competencies that are critical to patient safety. Increasing attention has therefore been directed toward endoscopic non-technical skills (ENTS) and their role in preven

Feelings of Not Mattering and Moral Injury Distress in University Students Exposed to Traumatic Events and Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Many university students have a history of exposure to adverse and potentially traumatic life events and may therefore experience Moral Injury (MI). University students exposed to trauma, and especially relational trauma, should be less impacted if they feel and know with certainty that they are valued and matter to other people. The current study uniquely examined MI distress and its correlates in 382 university students who reported the experience of at least one potentially traumatic event. Additionally, we examined the traumatic experiences faced by a subgroup of 2SLGBTQIA+ students and th

Predictors and contributors of burnout among hospitalists in central Michigan.

Burnout among hospitalists is a growing focus of quality improvement for hospitals around the United States. Burnout has been associated with decreased patient care quality, which may lead to decreased system sustainability. A gap remains however regarding burnout factors in certain region-specific populations such as central Michigan. The objective of this study is to examine the associations between burnout and a collection of potentially impactful variables including gender, age, marital status, years at work, and dependents. Four domains of burnout were investigated among hospitalists at M

The efficacy of pandemic-adjusted family/systemic constellation therapy in improving psychopathological symptoms: A randomized controlled trial.

The aim of this pre-registered (NCT05051462), randomized controlled trial was to investigate the efficacy and safety of a pandemic-adjusted version of family/systemic constellation therapy in the general population. Altogether, 80 individuals were randomized (85% retained; 67.6% women, Mage = 41.9 ± 9.2 years) and followed up 1- and 6 months after participation in the single-day intervention. Numerous indicators of psychopathology and addiction as well as wellbeing were assessed. Members of the intervention group improved significantly in terms of the a priori primary outcome (overall psychopa

AIMS: This scoping review charted existing literature regarding the quality and functioning of romantic relationships for people with SAD and high sub-clinical social anxiety (SA). METHODS: The review used a scoping approach to explore the current evidence base relating to SA, romantic relationship quality and functioning. Articles publis

Correlates of African American sexual assault survivors' medical care seeking.

African American women are at higher risk for sexual assault than other racial/ethnic groups and have an overall high prevalence of lifetime sexual assault. Despite elevated risk and prevalence, African American survivors are often reluctant to use services in the aftermath of sexual assault. Yet, little research has focused exclusively on African American women's sexual assault experiences including their experiences of medical care seeking. A mail survey study was conducted in Chicago (2010-2011) to understand better African American women's sexual assault experiences in relationship to post
