The normal and post-traumatic appearances of the sub-talar joints are illustrated by means of a number of arthrograms. Special projections were used in order to demonstrate various parts of the joints. The mobility of the articulating bones and its relationship to the trabecular structure has been demonstrated. The mechanism of typical injuries in normal limbs, and in the presence of pes planus, is described. Radiological features of capsular injuries of the sub-talar joint have been studied by arthrography.

Anterior displacement of the temporomandibular joint disc is associated with a general remodeling of the joint's soft tissues. The anterior part of the posterior attachment becomes fibrotic. The external shape and the internal architecture of the disc change in characteristic ways. The disc appears to overlie more of the lateral pterygoid muscle than is normal. The capsule connecting the anterior band of the disc to the condyle appears to be elongated.

Degenerative arthropathy and rheumatoid disease produce significant morbidity in elderly dental patients. Clinical and radiographic examination usually indicates the nature and extent of the disease in the temporomandibular joints and provides the basis for graduated treatment. Conservative measures are generally more acceptable and most successful in the elderly patient with pain, limitation of opening and grating of the joint. Acute-onset arthritis is relieved by local anaesthetics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and occlusal adjustment. Occasionally, intra-articular steroids are need…

Bronchial carcinomata very frequently metastasize to bony tissue. The most common sites are generally known, but metastases can also occur in atypical locations where they then simulate other clinical syndromes. The present paper describes the clinical picture of a patient with small-cell bronchial carcinoma metastasizing to the finger joints. The frequency of this manifestation is investigated on the basis of the literature.

Blood vessels supplying the coxofemoral joint were identified and described in 8 healthy, mature dogs. An accurate representation of the blood vessels was obtained by intra-arterial methyl methacrylate injection and sodium hydroxide corrosion of soft tissues until only the pelvis, femurs, and casts of the blood vessels remained. The sources of vascular supply to the dog's coxofemoral joint, from most to least contributory, were the lateral circumflex femoral artery, the medial circumflex femoral artery, the caudal gluteal artery, the cranial gluteal artery, and the iliolumbar artery. In additi

The results of skeletal scintigraphy with Tc-99m-medronate of five children, in whom bone or joint infection was suspected, are presented. They illustrate that the demonstration of areas of diminished radionuclide accumulation may be of considerable assistance in establishing a diagnosis.

Acrylic spacers and cubes of cortical bone of known dimensions were placed in predetermined locations in cadaver hip joints, which were then studied with plain radiography and linear, hypocycloidal, and computed tomography (CT). Joint space widening was not measurable on plain radiographs of the pelvis when 2-mm spacers were placed anywhere within the hip joint. When 4-mm spacers were used, widening measured 2 mm in the axis of measurement corresponding to the location of the spacer. Linear tomography did not permit identification of the 2-mm cubes; however, hypocycloidal tomography and CT con…

The conventional arthrographic methods for demonstration of the femoro-patellar joint are not sufficiently reliable. Through the use of CT-arthrography a cross-sectional image free of superimposition and possessing a high density resolution is available thus facilitating a direct demonstration of the joint cartilage. Traumatic and degenerative lesions of the cartilage can be clearly shown by CT-arthrography. Damage of cartilage in patients with chondromalacia patellae can be differentiated in its different stages. The shape of the patella and its relation to femoral condyles can be evaluated m

A group of patients with idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip joint reported on in 1971 have been reviewed and the findings reveal no significant change in their condition. since then a further 9 patients have been encountered and the findings are included in this article. This, we feel, confirms the existence of this strange condition, which almost inevitably results in the development of a fibrous ankylosis.

A classical guitarist performing for at least 5 hours each day developed a traumatic synovitis at the left wrist joint that was first erroneously considered to be rheumatoid arthritis. Comparison with members of the same guitar class suggested that unusual joint laxity of the fingers and wrist, probably inherited from the patient's father, was of more importance in the aetiology of the synovitis than a wide range of movement acquired by regular practice. Hyperextension of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the left index finger, quantified by the hyperextensometer, was less marked in the guitari

A posttraumatic, recurrent luxation of the knee joint is presented. The cause for the first luxation was a severe trauma. As the treatment of the ligament and capsule ruptures of the first luxation was inadequate, the effect was a completely unstable knee joint. By hyperextension trauma or hyperextension following weakness of the muscles of the thigh recurrent luxations of the knee were caused. The importance of a sufficient treatment of ligament and capsule damage following a knee luxation is emphasized.

The inflammatory activity of joints can be stated after intravenous administration of 99mTc-pertechnetate by demonstration of an enrichment of isotope. In 85 out of 111 patients (77%) a good accordance between profilogram and clinical finding could be seen. "False positive" results could be found in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, reactive arthritis and juvenile gout. In some cases of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis the clinical finding is later obvious than the demonstration by nuclear medicine. "False negative" results mainly can be seen at the wrists of patients with juveni…

In some patients with hemifacial microsomia, the mandibular ascending ramus and condyle are absent. Sometimes the zygomatic arch and glenoid fossa are also absent, and the zygoma and lateral orbital wall are deficient and misplaced. Complete alignment of the facial skeleton with construction of all components of the temporomandibular joint has been performed as a one-stage procedure on 14 patients, aged 6 to 23 years. The principle "first the bone, rarely the soft tissue" has evolved because when the skeleton is correct, the soft tissues assume a normal contour. The dangers of major skeletal s
