Caliber-Persistent Labial Artery: A Rarely Recognized Cause of a Lower Lip Swelling-Report of 5 Cases and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Caliber-persistent labial artery (CPLA) is a vascular anomaly of the labial artery that penetrates into the submucosa of the lip without reduction in diameter. It commonly presents as a bluish or normal-colored elevated mass and usually pulsates on manual palpation. It can resemble a mucocele or squamous cell carcinoma if surface ulceration presented. CPLA carries the risk of profuse bleeding if the artery undergoes transection during biopsy. METHODOLOGY: Five patients aged between 28 and 88 years presented with discrete lesions of the lower lip. All cases were diagnosed clinicall…

Difference in the Surgical Outcome of Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Patients with and without Pre-Alveolar Bone Graft Orthodontic Treatment.

Presurgical orthodontic treatment before secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG) is widely performed for cleft lip/palate patients. However, no randomized controlled trial has been published comparing SABG outcomes in patients with, and without, presurgical orthodontic treatment. This randomized, prospective, single-blinded trial was conducted between January 2012 and April 2015 to compare ABG volumes 6 months postoperatively between patients with and without presurgical orthodontic treatment. Twenty-four patients were enrolled and randomized and 22 patients completed follow-up. Patients who h…

A Pilot Study on the Influence of Facial Expression on Measurements in Three-Dimensional Digital Surfaces of the Face in Infants With Cleft Lip and Palate.

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional surface imaging is an increasingly popular modality for face measurements in infants with cleft lip and palate. Infants are noncompliant toward producing specific facial expressions, and selecting the appropriate moment of acquisition is challenging. The objective was to estimate amount and spatial distribution of deformation of the face due to facial expression in infants with cleft lip and palate and provide recommendations for an improved acquisition protocol, including a method of quality control in terms of obtaining images with true neutral expression. MATER…

Comprehensive treatment approach for bilateral cleft lip and palate in an adult with premaxillary osteotomy, tooth autotransplantation, and 2-jaw surgery.

We report the successful treatment of a woman aged 25 years 3 months with bilateral cleft lip and palate. She had a protruded premaxilla, collapsed posterior segments, wide alveolar defects with oronasal fistulae, a congenital missing tooth, and severe facial asymmetry with a transverse occlusal cant. The comprehensive treatment approach included (1) premaxillary osteotomy combined with alveolar bone grafting to reposition the premaxilla and minimize the wide alveolar defects, (2) autotransplantation of a tooth with complete root formation to the grafted bone region to restore the missing toot…

Complete Midline Cleft of Lower Lip, Mandible, Tongue, Floor of Mouth with Neck Contracture: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Midline cleft of the lower lip and mandible is an extremely rare condition. Since 1819, when the first case was reported by Couronne, fewer than 80 cases have been described in the world literature so far. The cleft has also been described as facial cleft no. 30 by Paul Tessier. The condition varies in severity from a mild variety in which there is a submucous cleft and notching in the lower lip to a severe variety, involving the tongue, floor of the mouth, mandible, absent hyoid, atrophic neck muscles, and sternum. In this case report, a female child having complete midline cleft of the lower…

Conventional prosthodontic management of partial edentulism with a resilient attachment-retained overdenture in a patient with a cleft lip and palate: a clinical report.

Recent advances in surgery and orthodontics have resulted in improvements in the management of patients with a cleft lip or palate. Early surgical intervention and bone-grafting procedures have frequently been used to ensure closure of the cleft and continuity of the alveolar bone. However, a need for the prosthodontic management of patients with a cleft palate still exists. Most frequently, the indication is to restore the edentulous spaces located anteriorly in the vicinity of the residual cleft defect. In addition to improving the esthetic outcome, prosthodontic management also is required …

Impact of primary palatoplasty on the maxillomandibular sagittal relationship in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The study objective was to evaluate, through a meta-analysis, the impact of primary palatoplasty on the sagittal maxillary and mandibular relationship among patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). Electronic database and hand searches were performed. Controlled clinical trials involving non-syndromic UCLP patients were included. Selected papers had to include a group of patients undergoing lip and palate repair and a group undergoing lip repair only. Data heterogeneity was demonstrated and individual means, standard deviations, and sample sizes were collected and summari…

Is a polymorphism in 10q25 associated with non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate? A meta-analysis based on limited evidence.

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is one of the most common defects in the human facial structure. A polymorphism, rs7078160 in 10q25, has been reported to be involved in susceptibility to the condition but results remain conflicting. To address this we did a meta-analysis of 7 eligible studies. Two authors independently collected information from the papers, and fixed effects or random effects models were used to calculate the combined estimates of risk. The pooled results showed that rs7078160 on 10q25, the minor allele A, had a higher risk of NSCLP than the major…

Clinical and genetic study on 356 Brazilian patients with a distinct phenotype of cleft lip and palate without alveolar ridge involvement.

Oral clefts include cleft lip (CL), cleft lip with cleft palate (CLP) and cleft palate (CP), with wide variations in clinical presentation and degree of severity. We described a sample of individuals with CL and CP without alveolar arch involvement (CL + CP) to verify if the characteristics of this group are distinct from those with CL with or without CP (CL/P) described in literature. The sample was composed of 356 patients with CL + CP, registered at HRCA-USP, Bauru-SP-Brazil. The following characteristics were investigated: sex ratio, parental age at the time of conception, parental consang…

A polymorphic marker associated with non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate in a population in Heilongjiang Province, northern China.

OBJECTIVE: To further assess the roles of the ABCA4 (ATP-binding cassette, sub-family A, member 4) gene in NSCL/P, we investigated two tag SNPs in ABCA4 (rs481931 and rs560426) in a northern Chinese Han population where the prevalence of NSCL/P is high. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The two SNPs were examined for association with NSCL/P in 344 patients and 324 healthy controls. Peripheral blood samples were acquired at study enrollment, and DNA samples were extracted. SNPs were genotyped using a mini-sequencing (SNAPSHOT) method. RESULTS: We observed a significant correlation between the ABCA4 SNP

Trends of lip, oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers in Australia 1982-2008: overall good news but with rising rates in the oropharynx.

BACKGROUND: Considerable global variation in the incidence of lip, of oral cavity and of pharyngeal cancers exists. Whilst this reflects regional or population differences in risk, interpretation is uncertain due to heterogeneity of definitions of sites and of sub-sites within this anatomically diverse region. For Australia, limited data on sub-sites have been published. This study examines age-standardised incidence trends and demography from 1982 to 2008, the latest data available. METHODS: Numbers of cases within ICD10:C00-C14 were obtained from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfa…
