Association of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia with offspring adiposity: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The association of gestational hypertension (GH) and preeclampsia (PE) with offspring adiposity outcomes had controversial resul … ffspring (MD=1.04, 95% CI: 0.67~1.42, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The systematic review suggested that maternal exposure to de novo hypertension disorders of pregnancy (HDP) was associated with obesity in offspring, extending from early childhood to adolescence. The meta-analysis showed that PE was associated with higher BMI in female offspring. More studies are neede …

Alcohol-induced premature permeability in mouse placenta-yolk sac barriers in vivo.

OBJECTIVE: Acute alcohol exposure induces malformation and malfunction of placenta-yolk sac tissues in rodents, reducing the labyrinth zone in the placenta and altering the permeability and fluidity of the cell membrane. During normal mouse placentation the cells line up in an optimal way to form a hemotrichorial placenta where layers II and III are connected through gap junctions. These act as molecular sieves that limit the passage of large molecules. PlGF is a developmentally regulated protein that controls the passage of molecules in the vasculosyncytial membranes and media of large blood

Phthalate exposure alters gut microbiota composition and IgM vaccine response in human newborns.

Postnatal exposure to di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a common plasticizer, is associated with allergy development in childhood, suggesting that DEHP exposure may dysregulate immune response in infants. We investigated whether DEHP exposure in newborns through medical treatment affected the gut microbiota pattern and vaccine response, which are both related to immune development. In this prospective cohort study from May 1, 2016 through July 31, 2017, newborns with respiratory distress who were given intravenous infusions (IVs) were enrolled as the DEHP group, and newborns who did not rece

Social support, violence exposure and mental health among young South African adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Cumulative violence exposure has been associated with both internalising and externalising difficulties in youth. Therefore, it is important to identify protective factors that may ameliorate both exposure to and the impact of cumulative violence. This study aimed to identify sources of perceived social support amongst early adolescents in a low-income, high-violence community in South Africa, and to examine the association of perceived support with exposure to violence and with the severity of depression, aggression and conduct disorder symptoms. METHOD: A sample of 615 Grade 7 le

Prenatal ethanol exposure differentially affects hippocampal neurogenesis in the adolescent and aged brain.

Exposure to ethanol in utero is associated with a myriad of sequelae for the offspring. Some of these effects are morphological in nature and noticeable from birth, while others involve more subtle changes to the brain that only become apparent later in life when the individuals are challenged cognitively. One brain structure that shows both functional and structural deficits following prenatal ethanol exposure is the hippocampus. The hippocampus is composed of two interlocking gyri, the cornu ammonis (CA) and the dentate gyrus (DG), and they are differentially affected by prenatal ethanol exp

Environmental tobacco smoke and children's health.

Passive exposure to tobacco smoke significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality in children. Children, in particular, seem to be the most susceptible population to the harmful effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Paternal smoking inside the home leads to significant maternal and fetal exposure to ETS and may subsequently affect fetal health. ETS has been associated with adverse effects on pediatric health, including preterm birth, intrauterine growth retardation, perinatal mortality, respiratory illness, neurobehavioral problems, and decreased performance in school. A valid est

Prenatal Inflammation Reprograms Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis Development in Female Rats.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis development during critical periods of ontogenesis can be disrupted by stress factors, including in particular maternal immune activation by infectious agents. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS, E.coli) exposure induces inflammation accompanied by proinflammatory cytokine release. The resulting elevated cytokine levels may lead to a disruption of epigenetic mechanisms regulating HPG axis development and to a reduced fertility in the offspring. This study focused on the long-term effects of prenatal LPS exposure on HPG axis development in female rat

Lack of relation of oral clefts to diazepam use during pregnancy.

The hypothesis that in utero exposure to diazepam increases the risk of oral-cleft anomalies was evaluated in a case-control study, in which 445 infants with cleft lip with or without cleft palate and 166 with cleft palate without cleft lip (cleft palate alone) were compared with 2498 control infants having other birth defects. For exposure to diazepam during lunar months 1 through 4 relative to no exposure during pregnancy, the estimated relative risks were 1.0 for cleft lip with or without cleft palate (95 per cent confidence interval, 0.5 to 2.1) and 0.8 for cleft palate alone (0.3 to 2.7).

Evidence for bystander signalling between human trophoblast cells and human embryonic stem cells.

Maternal exposure during pregnancy to toxins can occasionally lead to miscarriage and malformation. It is currently thought that toxins pass through the placental barrier, albeit bi-layered in the first trimester, and damage the fetus directly, albeit at low concentration. Here we examined the responses of human embryonic stem (hES) cells in tissue culture to two metals at low concentration. We compared direct exposures with indirect exposures across a bi-layered model of the placenta cell barrier. Direct exposure caused increased DNA damage without apoptosis or a loss of cell number but with …

Case Report: Unplanned pregnancy during treatment with inebilizumab in patients with AQP4-IgG-seropositive NMOSD: report of two cases.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) predominantly affects women and has a median age at onset of 40 years, meaning that many patients are of childbearing age. However, management of pregnant women with NMOSD remains extremely challenging. We report two patients with NMOSD who had unplanned pregnancies during inebilizumab (INE) treatment and successful deliveries. These cases provide preliminary clinical information regarding maternal disease control and pregnancy outcomes following INE exposure.

Neonatal lupus syndrome: a case with chondrodysplasia punctata and other unusual manifestations.

We report a case of a newborn infant whose mother had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) diagnosed before pregnancy. The child had clinical manifestations of neonatal lupus as well as chondrodysplasia punctata and other findings that resemble the congenital anomalies associated with the use of oral anticoagulants, with no history of exposure. We speculate that the combined action of the different maternal autoantibodies may produce the whole spectrum of manifestations.

Does prenatal methylmercury exposure from fish consumption affect blood pressure in childhood?

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to organic methylmercury (MeHg) from seafood consumption has been reported to increase children's blood pressure (BP). A report from the Faroe Islands noted significantly increased diastolic and systolic BP in 7-year-old children as prenatal MeHg exposure increased. The Faroese diet includes sea mammals that contain MeHg, cadmium, and other pollutants. We examined this relationship in the Seychelles Islands to determine if it was present in a society exposed primarily to MeHg from consuming ocean fish. METHODS: We obtained BP at ages 12 and 15 years on children

Antipsychotic drug use during pregnancy and neonatal outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: The use of antipsychotics during pregnancy has increased over the past two decades, primarily driven by an increase in the use of second-generation antipsychotic drugs. However, knowledge regarding the reproductive safety of antipsychotic drugs remains limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the associations between in utero antipsychotic drug exposure and congenital malformations and other neonatal outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycInfo was conducted from database inception to February 2024 for cohort and case-control (English

Association between exposure to air pollution during preconception and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: The role of anti-inflammatory diet.

BACKGROUND: Regarding the association between the sensitive time-windows of air pollution (AP) exposure and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), epidemiological findings are inconsistent. The dietary inflammatory potential has been implicated in the development of GDM, but it is unclear whether an anti-inflammatory diet during pregnancy reduces the association between AP and GDM. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize the sensitive time-windows of AP to GDM risk. Further, to verify whether a maternal anti-inflammatory diet can reduce the risk of AP-induced GDM, by inhibiting inflammation. METHO
