With the advent of real-time MRI, the motion and passage of cerebrospinal fluid can be visualized without gating and exclusion of low-frequency waves. This imaging modality gives insights into low-volume, rapidly oscillating cardiac-driven movement as well as sustained, high-volume, slowly oscillating inspiration-driven movement. Inspiration means a spontaneous or artificial increase in the intrathoracic dimensions independent of body position. Alterations in thoracic diameter enable the thoracic and spinal epidural venous compartments to be emptied and filled, producing an upward surge of cer

Individuals with neurological disorders, such as stroke or spinal cord injury, often have weakness and/or spasticity in their hand and wrist muscles, which can lead to impaired ability to extend their fingers and wrists. Functional electrical stimulation can help to restore these motor functions. However, the conventional stimulation method can lead to fast muscle fatigue and limited movements due to a non-physiological recruitment of motor units and a limited recruitment of deep muscles. In this paper, we investigated the feasibility of eliciting various hand opening and wrist extension movem

OBJECTIVE: Myofascial pain in temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) is evoked by various factors, including edematous change. We investigated whether the pain pattern is related to edematous change by using T2 mapping generated by magnetic resonance imaging to detect water content in the tissue.
STUDY DESIGN: One hundred and five patients diagnosed with TMDs, with or without unilateral masseter muscle pain, were divided into 6 groups according to their pain experience: pain on compression (23 cases), pain on movement (13 cases), spontaneous pain (4 cases), pain on compression and movement

The cerebellum plays an integral role in the control of limb and ocular movements, balance, and walking. Cerebellar disorders may be classified as sporadic or hereditary with clinical presentation varying with the extent and site of cerebellar damage and extracerebellar signs. Deficits in balance and walking reflect the cerebellum's proposed role in coordination, sensory integration, coordinate transformation, motor learning, and adaptation. Cerebellar dysfunction results in increased postural sway, hypermetric postural responses to perturbations and optokinetic stimuli, and postural responses

BACKGROUND: New light is being shed on the relationship between chronic neurotoxicity of the central nervous system (CNS) and exposure to lo … 772 person-years of exposure. OS-exposed workers were at elevated risk of "other extrapyramidal and movement disorders" (G25) with a SAR = 2.95 (95% CI: 1.41-5.42) and "systemic atrophies primarily affecting the CNS" (G10-G13) SAR = 2.08 (95% CI: 1.03-3.74). There were no significant differences between the OS-exposed workers and noise-exposed workers.
CONCLUSIONS: …

Neurodegenerative diseases encompass a large group of neurological disorders. Clinical symptoms can include memory loss, cognitive impairment, loss of movement or loss of control of movement, and loss of sensation. Symptoms are typically adult onset (although severe cases can occur in adolescents) and are reflective of neuronal and glial cell loss in the central nervous system. Neurodegenerative diseases also are considered progressive, with increased severity of symptoms over time, also reflective of increased neuronal cell death. However, various neurodegenerative diseases differentially aff

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most frequent, chronic, progressive degenerative disorders of the CNS, characterised by altered neurotransmission of dopamine in the basal ganglia. This may result in disturbances of movement, mobility and posture symptoms, all of which cause severe disability in PD patients. There is no cure for PD. Current treatment approaches aim at symptomatic improvement with a balance of the altered neurotransmission, particularly in striatal dopaminergic neurons. Levodopa, the metabolic precursor of active dopamine, is the most effective compound in the drug treatm

We explored the prevalence of respiratory dyskinesia (RD), diagnosed objectively using a spirograph, and the major risk factors for tardive dyskinesia (TD) and RD. A total of 258 inpatients treated with neuroleptics was interviewed, and TD was evaluated using the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS). Movement of the chest and respiratory regularity were assessed on clinical examination. Spirographs of patients with suspected RD were recorded, and RD was diagnosed based on spirographic data and the concurrence of two investigators. The prevalence of TD in this study was 22.1% (57 of 258).

Sleep disorders are highly relevant in clinical practice given their prevalence as well as their impact on health outcomes and quality of life. The most common concerns are excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, disordered breathing, and abnormal movements or behaviors during sleep. A detailed but targeted history is vital, particularly from the sleep partner/witness. In-laboratory sleep testing (polysomnography and multiple sleep latency test) remains vital in the diagnosis of certain sleep disorders (such as sleep-disordered breathing and central hypersomnia) and in specific populations (su

Homonymous parafoveal field loss impairs reading at the visual-sensory level. To elucidate the role of parafoveal visual field in reading, reading eye movements were recorded, by means of an infra-red registration technique, in 50 patients with homonymous hemianopia and visual field sparing ranging from 1 degree to 5 degrees; for comparison, a group of 25 normal subjects was studied. The degree of reading impairment in patients was found to depend on the extent of visual field sparing. Patients with right-sided loss of parafoveal visual field were more impaired than patients with left-sided lo

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To develop and evaluate artificial intelligence methods for detecting upper-body joint positions from video recordings of individuals during sleep, providing a foundation for future automated, video-based analysis of sleep movements that extends beyond conventional sensor-based methods.
METHODS: We developed HypnoPose and tested five different model configurations. We pretrained each variant on a public body pose dataset and evaluated on a sleep pose dataset comprising 4419 annotated frames from 198 video segments depicting movement across 74 participants (10 RBD, 4 PD, 9 he

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: SLC6A1-related neurodevelopmental disorder (SLC6A1-NDD) is emerging as a leading genetic cause of epilepsy, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and NDD caused by monoallelic loss of function variants in SLC6A1 (solute carrier family 6 member 1) which encodes a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transporter (GAT1). Descriptions of SLC6A1-NDD have centered around epilepsy, but caregivers report other features that drive key aspects of the disease burden. This retrospective chart review and prospective natural history study (NHS) aims to highlight the nonseizure clinical featur

Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder of sleep-wake regulation whose cardinal features include pathological daytime somnolence and dysregulation of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. It is frequently underdiagnosed in adolescents owing to symptom overlap with psychiatric, behavioral, and prior sleep disorders, including childhood obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Narcolepsy type 2 (NT2), defined by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) without cataplexy, poses particular diagnostic challenges due to the absence of a single pathognomonic feature. We report an 18-year-old female who presented wit

BACKGROUND: Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a severe and persistent involuntary movement disorder associated with long-term antipsychotic treatment. TD is likely underreported and misdiagnosed in routine practice, and there is a need to understand the proportion of patients who may experience TD but receive no formal diagnosis. This information could support the characterisation of patient populations that may benefit from novel therapeutic interventions. This study aimed to identify and describe patients with diagnosed or undiagnosed TD. Demographic and clinical features associated with an ICD-9/1

Introduction - Dystonia is the third most common movement disorder, which is highly diverse, both clinically and genetically. With the rise of next-generation sequencing, the number of genes associated with dystonia is increasing. Genetic testing is particularly important to predict the effectiveness of widely used therapeutic approaches (e.g., deep brain stimulation/DBS).Case report - The symptoms of a 69-yearold female patient began at the age of 18 years. Her symptoms developed gradually, i.e., cervical abnormal postures and movements first, followed by tongue movement problems, writer's cr

Focal hand dystonia in musicians is a task-specific movement disorder that can impair professional performance, and effective rehabilitative treatments remain limited. Prior work suggested that bi-hemispheric transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) paired with bimanual mirror-movement training may transiently improve fine motor control in affected pianists. This case-control pilot study tested whether extending this approach to three consecutive days would produce detectable and sustained benefit. Ten professional pianists with unilateral musician's dystonia and 10 matched healthy piani
