This report describes a case where joint neurological and cardiac surgery teams cooperated to perform simultaneous procedures of clipping a complex internal carotid artery under hypothermic cardiac arrest and coronary artery bypass grafting. A 69 year old man was evaluated for complaints of double vision, pain behind his right eye, and progressively worsening headaches. Examination showed bilateral upgoing toes and difficulty performing a tandem gait. The patient had a history of myocardial infarction. BACKGROUND: Histologically proven radical resections often lead to severe functional problems especially in upper aero-digestive-tract tumors. Oncologically the combination of external radiotherapy and brachytherapy offers an alternative treatment option. The purpose of this study was to obtain more informations about the levator veli palatini (LVP) muscle through the dissection of head and neck cadaver samples in 20 sides of normal adults, 4 sides of normal newborns and 4 sides of cleft palate newborns and histological sections in 6 normal fetuses. The results shown that the middle part of LVP is 7.9 mm in width, 3.4mm in thickness and 29mm2 on cross-section area. BACKGROUND: We describe an instrument for mobilizing the normal esophagus without thoracotomy. It is essentially a metal ring introduced through the neck that encircles the esophagus, separating it from surrounding tissues.
METHODS: Preliminary studies of 12 cadavers were followed by clinical application in 18 patients with esophageal carcinoma and two with benign esophageal lesions.
RESULTS: Pneumothorax occurred in 20%, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy in 25% (4 of 5 were transient), and thoracotomy for postoperative bleeding from the tumor bed in two cases. No anastomotic leakage occurred.

This study presents a refined, reproducible, and clinically appropriate animal model of renal transplantation. A pair of kidneys are harvested from a donor pig and preserved in Euro-Collins' solution (4 degrees C). After a set period of preservation, the allografts are transplanted to two recipient pigs. Management of arterial injuries at the thoracic outlet and neck presents a major challenge to the trauma surgeon: hemorrhagic shock, neurologic deficit, and limb loss are the serious sequelae. Over a 13-year period, 118 patients with injuries to the innominate, carotid, subclavian, and axillary arteries were evaluated. Most injuries were penetrating (78%). BACKGROUND: Prophylactic central lymph node dissection (CLND) in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is controversial. We aimed to investigate if prophylactic CLND aids risk stratification and contributes to the decision for postoperative RAI ablation.
METHODS: Patients undergoing thyroidectomy for PTC and prophylactic CLND were identified from an endocrine surgical unit database. Pathology reports where reviewed for number and size of lymph nodes and patients stratified by risk according to the ATA guidelines.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine prognostic factors influencing outcomes of surgical treatment in patients with T4a hypopharyngeal cancer.
METHODS: The present study enrolled 93 patients diagnosed with T4a hypopharyngeal cancer who underwent primary surgery between January 2005 and December 2015 at six medical centers in Korea. Primary tumor sites included pyriform sinus in 71 patients, posterior pharyngeal wall in 14 patients, and postcricoid region in 8 patients. Seventy-two patients received postoperative radio(chemo)therapy.

BACKGROUND: The most common clinical presentation of thoracic outlet syndrome stems from compression of the lower trunk of the brachial plexus or ulnar nerve. A plethora of anatomical variations have been implicated in the cause of thoracic outlet syndrome.
