The appearance, site of occurrence, and selected physical and clinical characteristics are reported for 102 symptomatic carcinomas diagnosed during a 30-month period in Torino, Italy. Erythroplasia was a more significant visual component than leukoplakia, confirming the results of a previous study on asymptomatic cancer in a US population. The condition of carcinoma arising in a pharyngeal pouch is rare. It has been described in relation to long standing pouches and in pouches previously treated by the Dohlman's operation. Three additional cases of carcinoma of the pharyngeal pouch are described.

Eleven cases of primary carcinoma of vagina were admitted in Kasturba Medical College Hospital during the last 10 years, of which 6 cases aged 44-72 years, were associated with 3rd degree uterine prolapse. All the patients attended the hospital in late stage in spite of having 3rd degree uterine prolapse. Blood stained discharge and ulceration on the prolapsed part, irreducible prolapse with urinary retention and marked oedema of local and surrounding tissues were the presenting symptoms. During the period 1978-1984, 525 patients referred with cancer of the oesophagus or gastro-oesophageal junction were assessed for operation and cure. After investigation, 276 patients were selected and operated upon, as a rule, 4 weeks after radiotherapy (40 Gy/4 weeks). In 224 patients (81 per cent) the oesophagus and cardia were resected and reconstructed with stomach (69 per cent), colon (21 per cent), free ileal graft (7 per cent) or Roux-en-Y-oesophagojejunostomy (3 per cent). This report describes experience with radiation therapy in hyperbaric oxygen in 201 patients with squamous carcinoma arising in the mobile portion of tongue (anterior 2/3), oropharynx, hypopharynx, and supraglottic larynx, treated between the years 1964 and 1980. Bronchial carcinoma is associated with a variety of non-metastatic neurological effects (Posner 1982). I report on a patient in whom bilateral papillitis was the presenting feature of squamous carcinoma of lung. Investigations revealed no evidence of cerebral secondary tumour and resolution of the papillitis followed dexamethasone therapy and resection of the carcinoma.

Cisplatin is an inorganic platinum compound used in the treatment of solid tumors. Clinical trials have proved its efficacy whilst recognising the nephrotoxicity of the drug. We report the case of a 14 1/2 year old female with an epidermoid carcinoma of the lung, who developed acute renal failure following two courses of Cisplatin. The predominant features were symptomatic hypomagnesaemia, hypocalcaemia and hypokalaemia which were corrected following the administration of intravenous magnesium. The sign of Leser-Trélat in a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix is reported. This seems to be the first report of this association. Literature was reviewed, try to correlate this entity with acanthosis nigricans and to link this sign with internal malignancy or other kind of epidermal stimuli.

In 5 patients with malignant pleural effusion, neothramycin (NTM) was intrapleurally administered at a dose of 30 mg in 3 cases and 40 mg in 2 cases and the pharmacokinetics was studied by using compartment models. Two patients with Netherton's syndrome are presented who, in addition to the classical triad of trichorrhexis invaginata, ichthyosis linearis circumflexa and atopy, exhibit signs of reduced cellular immunity (negative skin tests to a battery of microbial antigens, impaired stimulation of lymphocytes with various mitogens and widespread viral warts resembling epidermodysplasia verruciformis). One patient had a squamous cell carcinoma possibly arising from a viral wart. It is suggested that Netherton's syndrome is part of the group of immunodeficiency syndromes with atopy-like symptoms.

A case of erythema gyratum repens is reported in 78 year old woman. The particularly typical eruption, mainly affecting the trunk, was associated with a squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. The paraneoplastic dermatosis cleared after radiotherapy of the cancer.
