Preliminary evidence for context-dependent modulation of interoceptive signals in social evaluation.

Interoception, the brain's processing of internal bodily signals, has emerged as a key mechanism linking body and mind. Yet it remains unresolved whether this processing operates automatically or is selectively modulated depending on context. Here, we used heartbeat-evoked potentials (HEPs) as a cortical marker of interoception, in combination with skin conductance responses (SCRs), to compare interoceptive processing between social (trustworthiness) and perceptual (symmetry) face evaluation tasks in which affective meaning is not task-relevant. HEP amplitudes over the left parietal cortex (12

Wireless, skin-attachable patch with 3D liquid metal electrodes for vagus nerve stimulation in depression.

Current nonsurgical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) approaches often suffer from broad current spread, high electrode-skin impedance, and unintended stimulation of surrounding tissues, which can reduce efficacy and cause side effects. Here, we present a wirelessly operable, skin-attachable VNS patch with three-dimensional liquid-metal electrodes that mimic the low modulus of biological tissues, developed as a minimally invasive platform for investigating the biological mechanisms underlying VNS in a mouse model of depression. The soft, low-modulus three-dimensional liquid metal electrodes gently

Gabapentin may promote language development in a pediatric patient with autism spectrum disorder: a case report.

At this time, there is no report of how gabapentin may promote language development in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experiencing neuropathic pain. A clinically significant increase in expressed vocabulary, around 10 words when gabapentin was prescribed to around 150 words at the 6-month follow-up, was observed in a child with ASD. This was likely due to improved symptoms of neuropathic pain, which could have allowed the patient to more effectively focus on language acquisition. Given that speech therapy had failed for years at that time to improve the patient's vocabulary and h

Age-Associated Development of Sleep Disturbances in db/db Diabetic Mice.

PURPOSE: Disturbed sleep quantity and quality are associated with diabetes and have been recognized as significant risk factors for its development. However, it remains unclear whether sleep disturbances arise during the progression of diabetes and what underlying neurobiological mechanisms may be involved. We aimed to characterize the dynamic development of sleep-wake phenotype in diabetic db/db mice and to investigate the associated neural mechanisms. METHODS: Polysomnographic recordings were conducted to characterize age-dependent changes in sleep-wake characteristics in diabetic db/db mic

Knowledge gaps in high-energy sacral fracture treatment and management.

High-energy sacral fractures (HESF) are often challenging injuries due to the location of the sacrum at the junction of the spine and pelvis, the complex biomechanics of the pelvic ring and the wide spectrum of injury patterns, which make treatment standardization challenging. Despite advances in classification systems - particularly the AOSpine Sacral Injury Classification - significant gaps remain in understanding optimal management. To review and discuss the management and identify knowledge gaps related to HESF. A narrative review of the literature was conducted, focusing on five domains:

Does preserving the preputial subcutaneous layer in distal hypospadias surgery harbor potential consequences for penile sensation?

PURPOSE: Penile surgeries, such as circumcision and hypospadias repair, somewhat raise concerns about long-term effects on genital sensation and sexual function. This study was conducted to support a hypothesis that preserving the dorsal preputial subcutaneous tissue and adding it as a tissue onlay to the ventral hypospadias penis could provide a potential benefit in the future on penile sensation and sexual function. METHODS: The study groups consisted of 22 children who underwent tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (TIPU) distal hypospadias repair, and 24 standard circumcision cases for

FQGR-net: Morphology-based litchi flower quantification and gender recognition.

As a crucial agricultural crop in China, litchi exhibits a biennial bearing pattern with alternating high-yield and low-yield cycles, known as on-year and off-year respectively. Research has identified unstable floral initiation as the primary cause of irregular fruiting in mid-to-late maturing cultivars. Rapid and accurate quantification of female to male flower ratios during the flowering phase enables targeted management strategies to optimize floral development and enhance fruit-setting rates. This study proposes Flower Quantification and Gender Recognition Network (FQGR-Net), a three-bran

Biphasic Electrical Stimulation of Schwann Cells on Conducting Polymer-Coated Carbon Microfibers.

Electroactive biomaterials are a key emerging technology for the treatment of neural damage. Conducting polymer-coated carbon microfibers are particularly useful for this application because they provide directional support for cell growth and tissue repair and simultaneously allow for ultrasensitive recording and stimulation of neural activity. Here, we report in vitro experiments investigating the biology of Schwann cells (SCs), a major player in peripheral nerve regeneration, on electroconducting microfibers. The optimal molecular composition of the cell substrate and cell culture medium wa

Consistent neural representation of valence in encoding and recall.

Recall is an act of elicitation of emotions similar to those emotions previously experienced. Unlike the past experiences where external sensory stimuli triggered emotions, recall does not require external sensory stimuli. This difference is pertinent to the key debate in affective representation, addressing whether the representation of valence is consistent across modalities (modality-general) or dependent on modalities (modality-specific). This study aimed to verify neural representations of valence between encoding and recall. Using neuroimaging data from movie watching and recall (Chen et

A Transformer-Based Multimodal Fusion Network for Emotion Recognition Using EEG and Facial Expressions in Hearing-Impaired Subjects.

Hearing-impaired people face challenges in expressing and perceiving emotions, and traditional single-modal emotion recognition methods demonstrate limited effectiveness in complex environments. To enhance recognition performance, this paper proposes a multimodal fusion neural network based on a multimodal multi-head attention fusion neural network (MMHA-FNN). This method utilizes differential entropy (DE) and bilinear interpolation features as inputs, learning the spatial-temporal characteristics of brain regions through an MBConv-based module. By incorporating the Transformer-based multi-hea

Optimized sequential model for superior classification of plant disease.

Indian agriculture is vital sector in the country's economy, providing employment and sustenance to millions of farmers. However, Plant diseases are a serious risk to crop yields and farmers' livelihoods. Traditional plant disease diagnosis methods rely heavily on human expertise, which can lead to inaccuracies due to the invisible nature of early disease symptoms and the labor-intensive process, making them inefficient for large-scale agricultural management. To recover from this and, address these challenges, this study explores deep learning, specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)

Dorsal bed nucleus of the stria terminalis GABA neurons are necessary for chronic unpredictable stress-induced depressive behaviors in adolescent male mice.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that neurons in the Bed Nucleus of the Stria Terminalis (BNST) respond to stress and play a key role in mental health. However, the cellular bases of BNST in adolescent depression remain elusive. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to the control (Ctrl) or chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) groups. The CUS mice, aged 28 days, were subjected to diverse stressors at various times of the day for 12 days. Depression-like behaviors were assessed through the sucrose preference test (SPT) and tail suspension test (TST). Immunostaining was used to

Mapping gray matter changes in anorexia nervosa: a functional connectivity network approach.

BACKGROUND: Studies using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) have shown considerable variability in gray matter (GM) changes in anorexia nervosa (AN). However, it remains unclear whether these changes converge on common brain networks underlying the disorder. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases to identify studies on whole-brain GM alterations in AN published up to October 10, 2024. The Human Connectome Project (HCP) dataset (n = 1,093) and functional connectivity network mapping (FCNM) approach to identify common brain networks associa

Differential Gene Expression in the Prefrontal Cortex and Hippocampus Following Long-Access Methamphetamine Self-Administration in Male Rats.

Methamphetamine (METH) is a potent psychostimulant that disrupts cognitive and neurobiological functions in brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus. Chronic METH use leads to altered synaptic plasticity, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction, contributing to methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). This study investigates gene expression changes following long-access intravenous METH self-administration in a rodent model. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was conducted on PFC and hippocampal tissue to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between METH-treated an
