Tuberculosis Diagnostics and Localization in Chest X-Rays via Deep Learning Models.

For decades, tuberculosis (TB), a potentially serious infectious lung disease, continues to be a leading cause of worldwide death. Proven to be conveniently efficient and cost-effective, chest X-ray (CXR) has become the preliminary medical imaging tool for detecting TB. Arguably, the quality of TB diagnosis will improve vastly with automated CXRs for TB detection and the localization of suspected areas, which may manifest TB. The current line of research aims to develop an efficient computer-aided detection system that will support doctors (and radiologists) to become well-informed when making

Automatic anatomical classification of colonoscopic images using deep convolutional neural networks.

BACKGROUND: A colonoscopy can detect colorectal diseases, including cancers, polyps, and inflammatory bowel diseases. A computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that can recognize anatomical locations during a colonoscopy could efficiently assist practitioners. We aimed to construct a CAD system using a CNN to distinguish colorectal images from parts of the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum. METHOD: We constructed a CNN by training of 9,995 colonoscopy images and tested its performance by 5,121 in

Patterns of distant metastasis in Chinese women according to breast cancer subtypes.

UNLABELLED: Motor imagery (MI) is a high-level cognitive process that has been widely applied to brain-computer inference (BCI) and motor recovery. In practical applications, however, huge individual differences and unclear neural mechanisms have seriously hindered the application of MI and BCI systems. Thus, it is urgently needed to explore MI from a new perspective. Here, we applied a hidden Markov model (HMM) to explore the dynamic organization patterns of left- and right-hand MI tasks. Eleven distinct HMM states were identified based on MI-related EEG data. We found that these states can b

Decoding user satisfaction during reading of pre-defined question-answer pairs: BCI approach using delta and gamma EEG.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid proliferation of large language models (LLMs) has intensified the need for robust evaluation frameworks to align artificial intelligence (AI) behavior with human expectations. While current reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) strategies heavily rely on explicit, post-hoc self-reports, these metrics are fundamentally limited by subjective biases and user non-compliance. METHODS: To address this, the current study presents a novel brain-computer interface (BCI) framework that systematically characterizes the continuous, implicit neural correlates of user sa

Neural dynamics underlying the acquisition of distinct auditory category structures.

Despite the multidimensional and temporally fleeting nature of auditory signals we quickly learn to assign novel sounds to behaviorally relevant categories. The neural systems underlying the learning and representation of novel auditory categories are far from understood. Current models argue for a rigid specialization of hierarchically organized core regions that are fine-tuned to extracting and mapping relevant auditory dimensions to meaningful categories. Scaffolded within a dual-learning systems approach, we test a competing hypothesis: the spatial and temporal dynamics of emerging auditor

Neural Facial Mesh Registration using Geometry Images and Teichmüller Refinement.

Facial surface registration is an important research problem in computer vision and graphics, and has broad applications in the industries of gaming and movie. However, it is still challenging to accurately and efficiently register dense surfaces that undergo intense expression change. In this paper, we propose a novel registration method for facial meshes. By leveraging geometry images as the 3D representation, we reduce the 3D mesh registration problem to a 2D image registration problem. A Transformer-based neural network is trained to obtain a 2D deformation field and a Teichmüller map is c

Anisotropic molecular coarse-graining by force and torque matching with neural networks.

We develop a machine-learning method for coarse-graining condensed-phase molecular systems using anisotropic particles. The method extends currently available high-dimensional neural network potentials by addressing molecular anisotropy. We demonstrate the flexibility of the method by parametrizing single-site coarse-grained models of a rigid small molecule (benzene) and a semi-flexible organic semiconductor (sexithiophene), attaining structural accuracy close to the all-atom models for both molecules at a considerably lower computational expense. The machine-learning method of constructing th

Deep 3D reconstruction of synchrotron X-ray computed tomography for intact lungs.

Synchrotron X-rays can be used to obtain highly detailed images of parts of the lung. However, micro-motion artifacts induced by such as cardiac motion impede quantitative visualization of the alveoli in the lungs. This paper proposes a method that applies a neural network for synchrotron X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) data to reconstruct the high-quality 3D structure of alveoli in intact mouse lungs at expiration, without needing ground-truth data. Our approach reconstructs the spatial sequence of CT images by using a deep-image prior with interpolated input latent variables, and in this way

Deficits in decision-making induced by parietal cortex inactivation are compensated at two timescales.

Perceptual decisions arise through the transformation of samples of evidence into a commitment to a proposition or plan of action. Such transformation is thought to involve cortical circuits capable of computation over timescales associated with working memory, attention, and planning. Neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) play a role in these functions, and much of what is known about the neurobiology of decision-making has been influenced by studies of LIP and its network of connections. However, the causal role of LIP remains controversial. In this study, we used pharmacological a

Stopped object detection by learning foreground model in videos.

The automatic detection of objects that are abandoned or removed in a video scene is an interesting area of computer vision, with key applications in video surveillance. Forgotten or stolen luggage in train and airport stations and irregularly parked vehicles are examples that concern significant issues, such as the fight against terrorism and crime, and public safety. Both issues involve the basic task of detecting static regions in the scene. We address this problem by introducing a model-based framework to segment static foreground objects against moving foreground objects in single view se

The promise of computer-assisted auscultation in screening for structural heart disease and clinical teaching.

Cardiac auscultation has been the central clinical tool for the diagnosis of valvular and other structural heart diseases for over a century. Physicians acquire competence in this technique through considerable training and experience. In Africa, however, we face a shortage of physicians and have the lowest health personnel-to-population ratio in the world. One of the proposed solutions for tackling this crisis is the adoption of health technologies and product innovations to support different cadres of health workers as part of task shifting. Computer-assisted auscultation (CAA) uses a digita

Network-based intrusion detection using deep learning technique.

A high growth rate in network traffic and the complexity of cyber threats have made it necessary to create more effective and flexible intrusion detection systems. Most traditional Network-based Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) can become weak at detecting new patterns of attacks due to the use of obsolete data or traditional machine learning models. To overcome the mentioned constraints, the current research presents a new deep learning solution that combines Sequential Deep Neural Networks (DNN) and Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation unit with an Extra Tree Classifier feature selectio

The role of plasticity-related functional reorganization in the explanation of central dyslexias.

This investigation explored the hypothesis that patterns of acquired dyslexia may reflect, in part, plasticity-driven relearning that dynamically alters the division of labour (DOL) between the direct, orthography → phonology (O → P) pathway and the semantically mediated, orthography → semantics → phonology (O → S → P) pathway. Three simulations were conducted using a variant of the triangle model of reading. The model demonstrated core characteristics of normal reading behaviour in its undamaged state. When damage was followed by reoptimization (mimicking spontaneous recovery), the model repr

Keratoconus Severity Classification Using Features Selection and Machine Learning Algorithms.

Keratoconus is a noninflammatory disease characterized by thinning and bulging of the cornea, generally appearing during adolescence and slowly progressing, causing vision impairment. However, the detection of keratoconus remains difficult in the early stages of the disease because the patient does not feel any pain. Therefore, the development of a method for detecting this disease based on machine and deep learning methods is necessary for early detection in order to provide the appropriate treatment as early as possible to patients. Thus, the objective of this work is to determine the most r

Machine Learning Algorithms for Early Detection of Bone Metastases in an Experimental Rat Model.

Machine learning (ML) algorithms permit the integration of different features into a model to perform classification or regression tasks with an accuracy exceeding its constituents. This protocol describes the development of an ML algorithm to predict the growth of breast cancer bone macrometastases in a rat model before any abnormalities are observable with standard imaging methods. Such an algorithm can facilitate the detection of early metastatic disease (i.e., micrometastasis) that is regularly missed during staging examinations. The applied metastasis model is site-specific, meaning that
