Animal derived surfactant extract versus protein free synthetic surfactant for the prevention and treatment of respiratory distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: A wide variety of surfactant preparations have been developed and tested including synthetic surfactants and surfactants derived from animal sources. Although clinical trials have demonstrated that both synthetic surfactant and animal derived surfactant preparations are effective, comparison in animal models has suggested that there may be greater efficacy of animal derived surfactant products, perhaps due to the protein content of animal derived surfactant. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effect of animal derived surfactant to protein free synthetic surfactant preparations in preterm

Effects of l-thyroxine administration, TSH-receptor antibodies and smoking on the risk of recurrence in Graves' hyperthyroidism treated with antithyroid drugs: a double-blind prospective randomized study.

OBJECTIVE: In Graves' hyperthyroidism treated with antithyroid drugs (ATD), the overall relapse rate reaches 30-50% following ATD discontinuation. Conflicting results have previously been reported with regard to the usefulness of combining ATD with thyroxine (l-T4), and thereafter maintaining l-T4 treatment after ATD withdrawal. Also, clinicians are in search of useful parameters to predict the risk of a recurrence of hyperthyroidism after ATD treatment. DESIGN: Eighty-two consecutive patients (70 women and 12 men; mean age 36 years) with a first episode of Graves' hyperthyroidism were invest

Adverse Events in the Treatment of Periprosthetic Fractures Around the Knee - a Clinical and Radiological Outcome Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of periprosthetic fractures associated with total knee arthroplasty (PpFxK) has been reported to be 0.3 - 5.5%. 40% of all cases are related to revision TKA. The most common localisation is the distal femur. Classification is performed according to Rorabeck (RB). RB I - II fractures are usually treated with locked plating and retrograde intramedullary nailing, whereas RB III fractures are an indication for revision arthroplasty using a hinged endoprosthesis. PpFxK of the patella can be classified according to Goldberg and PpFxK of the proximal tibia can be grouped as

The effect of a systematic multi-dimensional assessment in severe uncontrolled asthma: a literature review and protocol for an investigator-initiated, open-label, randomized-controlled trial (EXACT@home study).

INTRODUCTION: Severe asthma affects 3.6% of the asthma population, in which patients are uncontrolled despite optimal drug therapy and management of treatable traits. These patients are eligible for treatment with biologicals, which provide significant benefits but are costly and need precise indication. However, identifying all individual treatable traits before diagnosing severe asthma is challenging. A systematic multi-dimensional assessment may help identify and address these hidden traits, resulting in tailored treatment and reducing the number of unnecessary biological prescriptions. ME

The Histamine Pathway is a Target to Treat Hepatic Experimental Erythropoietic Protoporphyria.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is caused by mutations in ferrochelatase, which inserts iron into protoporphyrin-IX (PP-IX) to generate heme. EPP is characterized by PP-IX accumulation, skin photosensitivity, cholestasis, and end-stage liver disease. Despite available drugs that address photosensitivity, treatment of EPP-related liver disease remains an unmet need. METHODS: We administered delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and deferoxamine (DFO), which results in PP-IX overproduction and accumulation. High-throughput compound screening of ALA + DFO-treated zebrafish ident

Modelling long-term outcomes in patients with post-stroke spasticity with or without BoNT-A treatment on all-cause mortality and secondary cardiovascular events: TOXINS 2024 7th International Conference: Basic science and clinical aspects of Botulinum and other neurotoxins - Berlin, Germany, 17/01/2024 - 20/01/2024.

App. 25 % of stroke survivors develop post-stroke spasticity (PSS) over the first year after a stroke, and they also experience motor weakness, which may prevent effective recovery by restricting mobility and participating in exercise programmes. Patients generally experience rapid improvement with Botulinum Toxin Type A (BoNT-A) therapy for PSS. Unfortunately, clinical trials demonstrating benefits from BoNT-A treatment are of short duration. Consequently, it is not known if treatment-related improvements in mobility could also contribute to lowering the risks of secondary cardiovascular (CV)

Transnasal delivery of human A-beta peptides elicits impaired learning and memory performance in wild type mice.

BACKGROUND: Murine models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are mainly based on overexpression of pathologic amyloid precursor protein and/or presenilins. Those genes resemble underlying cause of early onset type of AD while about 99 % of all human cases are to be characterized as sporadic, late onset. Appropriate animal models for this type of AD are still missing. We here investigated, if transnasal delivery of A-beta 42 peptides might serve to mimic pathological effects in mice. RESULTS: A-beta 42 peptides, used for the behavioral study, showed the expected dose-dependent toxicity in neur oblast

Comparison of short-segment pedicle fixation with versus without inclusion of the fracture level in the treatment of mild thoracolumbar burst fractures.

BACKGROUND: A review of the literature showed that posterior short-segment fixation including the fractured vertebra (PSFFV) has better outcomes in the treatment of thoracolumbar burst fractures(TBFs) than patients with short-segment pedicle screw fixation(SSPF) alone. However, its efficacy in mild TBFs with load-sharing scores of 3 and 4 points has not been specifically analyzed. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical, functional and radiologic results of PSFFV with SSPF for mild TBFs and to determine whether the screws in the fractured vetebra were necessary for these patients.
