Preventing mechanical restraint in forensic mental health care: A secondary analysis of interviews with patients, carers, nursing assistants and nursing staff.

The use of restrictive interventions to prevent harm remains one of the most persistent challenges in psychiatry. Mechanical restraint (MR), involving belts to limit patient movement, is among the most controversial practices due to their physical and psychological consequences for both patients and staff. MR prevalence varies widely across countries and remains particularly high in forensic mental health settings. In Denmark, MR episodes have increased in recent years despite the implementation of evidence-based interventions, underscoring the need for effective, ethical, and sustainable stra

Reading literature on kinship in a clinical context: a qualitative study of a reading group for nurses.

Family members, relatives and friends are all affected when someone is hospitalised with a life-threatening illness. However, they often feel neglected and sometimes ignored by healthcare professionals. To address this, the reading of literature has been used in various clinical contexts in an attempt to humanise the care of patients and their relatives. Reading fiction enables healthcare professionals to imaginatively enter relatives' perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of their experiences, which may in turn enhance family-centred care in clinical practice. However, research on ho

Moral Injury in Mental Health Nursing-A Qualitative Descriptive Study in Switzerland.

Moral injury (MI) is the damage done to one's conscience or moral compass when one perpetrates, witnesses, or fails to prevent acts that transgress one's own moral beliefs. There are numerous associations between MI and various mental health outcomes, including burnout, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and increased job turnover. However, there has been no research or official study investigating MI in mental health nurses (MHNs) in Switzerland. This study aimed to examine and describe the spectrum and impact of MI in Swiss MHN. Demographic data and descriptions of MI in mental health nur

Examining School Nurses' Knowledge and Confidence Related to Their Intention to Screen for and Report Child Sexual Abuse: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a preventable national public health problem that results in adverse health consequences. Research suggests youth experiencing CSA are often of school age. Screening for early detection of health issues is integral to school nurse (SN) practice. Still, there is little evidence that routine screening when CSA is suspected is occurring in schools, despite recommendations that it should be. Lack of confidence and knowledge related to screening and reporting for CSA contribute to a SN's missed opportunity for early intervention. PURPOSE: The aim of this stu

Clinical trajectory of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome/hypermobility spectrum disorders in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Research on hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and hypermobility spectrum disorder (hEDS/HSD) has described its natural history and clinical course in children, adolescents, and young to middle-aged adults. However, more research is needed on the clinical trajectory of hEDS/HSD into older age. Therefore, clinicians, including nurse practitioners, know little about identifying older adults with undiagnosed hEDS/HSD. OBJECTIVE: This review sought to identify studies regarding aging in hEDS/HSD. DATA SOURCES: This scoping review included PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allie

Consumers living with psychosis: Perspectives on sexuality.

Mental health clinicians work within a recovery framework that is rights based and emphasizes positive and respectful approaches to working with mental health consumers. Mental health nurses' practice is also predicated on holism and inclusiveness, yet consumers' sexuality is sometimes neglected and rights in this area overlooked. Also overlooked is sexuality as an area for investigation, particularly from a consumer perspective, even though it constitutes part of consumers' broader remit of sexual health. This paper reports findings from a case study where consumers were asked about their abi
