Home-based parenteral nutrition (HBPN) allows recovering or maintaining the nutritional status of patients with chronic intestinal failure that cannot afford their nutritional requirements through the digestive route. Frequently, liver function impairments develop along the treatment, which in the most severe cases, and especially in premature and low-weight infants, may lead to an irreversible liver failure. The proper composition of the parenteral nutrition bag, avoiding an excess of energy intake, together with the use of new types of lipid emulsions (with lower content in -6 fatty acids an…

Copper deficiency is a rare complication of enteral nutrition. Haematologic abnormalities such as neutropenia and anaemia, but not pancytopenia, have been described associated to copper deficiency. We report the case of a patient requiring long term enteral nutrition through jejunostomy who developed copper deficiency and pancytopenia. In 1991, a 47-year-old woman was admitted with severe gastroesophageal mucositis after an attempted suicide with caustic intake. Enteral nutrition with a commercial, polymeric, fiber-containing formula was started. Twenty-eight months later, the patient develope

Background/Objectives: Child undernutrition remains a major public health in Djibouti, yet conventional anthropometric indicators may underestimate its true burden by failing to capture overlapping forms of malnutrition. The Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF) provides a more comprehensive assessment by identifying children experiencing one or multiple anthropometric deficits. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition among children under five years of age in Djibouti using the CIAF. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of data from the

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem in aging populations and is increasingly linked to interactions between nutritional status and systemic inflammation. The Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and the Advanced Lung Cancer Inflammation Index (ALI) are established immunonutritional markers in oncology, but their associations with osteoporosis in the general population remain unclear. We examined the cross-sectional associations of PNI and ALI with osteoporosis and compared the consistency of these associations across analytic strategies. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of adult…

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder, leading to long-lasting pain. This study aimed to explore the relationship between geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) and immune-inflammatory biomarkers neutrophil-percentage-to-lymphocyte ratio (NPAR)/neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR)/platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR)/lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR)/systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in elderly RA patients. We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES; 2005-2018), focusing on adults aged ≥60 years (final sample size

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the impact of nutrition on critically ill older adults, focusing on the role of comorbidities such as malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty, as well as the importance of nutritional support for outcomes such as mortality, recovery, and long-term disability.
RECENT FINDINGS: Malnutrition is highly prevalent in the elderly and is strongly associated with adverse outcomes, including increased mortality, longer ICU stays, and higher rates of infection. In addition, frailty, multimorbidity, and cognitive decline significantly contribute to the vulnerability of older pa

This study examined access to water, food, and nutrition programs among marginalized communities in Southern Punjab, Pakistan, and their effects on nutrition. Both qualitative and quantitative data were used in this study. We held two focus group discussions (one with 10 males and one with 10 females) and conducted in-depth interviews with 15 key stakeholders, including 20 mothers and 10 healthcare providers. A survey of 235 households was carried out to evaluate water and food insecurity, with the data analyzed using Wilcoxon's rank-sum test, t-test, and Pearson's chi-square test. The results

Diet and exercise interventions may help reverse malnutrition and muscle wasting common in pancreatic cancer. We performed a scoping review to identify the knowledge gaps surrounding diet and exercise interventions. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, ProQuest Theses and Dissertations, and Google Scholar using the umbrella terms of "pancreatic cancer," "diet/nutrition," and "exercise." Included were articles reporting on ambulatory adults with diagnosed pancreatic cancer. Excluded were studies examining prevention and/or risk, animal, o

OBJECTIVE: The levels, distributions of child malnutrition and its potential risk factors are not very well known in Myanmar. The objectives … each type of malnutrition were identified, including low birth weight (LBW) and inadequate maternal nutritional status. Except for overweight, regional variations largely persisted even after adjustment for the risk factors investigated.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of malnutrition among children under 5 is still high in Myanmar, most commonly stunting. Targeted inte …

Those with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) require important considerations with respect to food and nutrition, owing to advanced age, poor diet behaviours and immobility associated with the disease process and co-morbid state. These considerations, coupled with the economic effectiveness of medical nutrition therapy, mandate that dietetic care plays a vital role in the management of PAD. Despite this, optimising dietetic care in PAD remains poorly understood. This narrative review considers the role of medical nutrition therapy in every stage of the PAD process, ranging from the onset and i

OBJECTIVES: Infants with short bowel syndrome (SBS) require diligent nutritional support for adequate growth. Enteral independence is a primary goal, but must be balanced with ensuring sufficient nutrition. We aimed to describe growth trajectory in infants with SBS as function of nutritional intake during first 2 years of life.
METHODS: Infants with SBS were reviewed (2008-2016). z Scores for weight, height, and head circumference (HC) were recorded at birth, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Nutritional intake, serum liver enzyme, and bilirubin levels were assessed at all time points. Pearson cor

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the maternal and child nutrition situation in Asia in transition and its public health implications.
RECENT FINDINGS: Countries in Asia are facing a double burden of malnutrition. Accessibility to high energy, less nutrient-dense foods or processed foods affects current dietary patterns, whereas industrialization is leading to more sedentary lifestyles both in rural and urban areas. Stunting and wasting among young children persist but have declined in severity, whereas overweight and obesity have risen rapidly. Growth faltering in height during the fir

Preserving or restoring adequate nutritional status is a key factor to delay the onset of chronic diseases and to accelerate recovery from acute illnesses. In particular, consistent and robust data show the loss of muscle mass, that is, sarcopenia, is clinically relevant since it is closely related to increased morbidity and mortality in healthy individuals and patients. Sarcopenia is defined as the age-related loss of muscle mass and function. International study groups have recently proposed separate definitions and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia. Unfortunately, the rate of agreement in …

Nutrition and health are fundamental pillars of human development across the entire life-span. The potential role of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in improving nutrition and health and reduction of poverty has been recognized in recent years. NTFPs continue to be an important source of household food security, nutrition, and health. Despite their significant contribution to food security, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods, these tend to be overlooked by policy-makers. NTFPs have not been accorded adequate attention in development planning and in nutrition-improvement programmes in Gh

Latent copper deficiency develops after 3 mo in patients receiving enteral feeding solutions with low copper levels. We examined whether a copper-rich enteral solution restores and maintains the level of copper in serum for a prolonged period. The study group consisted of 13 patients (eight males and five females). Commercial preparations, F2alpha and Lifelon-PZ, for enteral administration were used. F2alpha and Lifelon-PZ contain 1.6 and 0.13 mg/L, respectively, of copper. Serum copper levels were monitored in patients before and after administration of F2alpha, a copper-rich enteral solution

Vitamin C is an essential dietary nutrient required as a co-factor for many enzymes, and humans are among the few animals that lack the ability to synthesize the compound from glucose. The reduced form of the vitamin, ascorbic acid, is an especially effective antioxidant owing to its high electron-donating power and ready conversion back to the active reduced form. Concentrations of the vitamin in body tissues and fluids are regulated through interactions of intestinal absorption, cellular transport, and excretion. The amount of vitamin C needed to prevent scurvy is very small and easily obtai

Depending on the severity of malnutrition, protein depletion is associated with general debilitation, inanition, slow healing of wounds, delayed convalescence, increased susceptibility to infection, and other pathophysiologic conditions. In an effort to decrease the incidence and severity of these complications, Hermann Hospital and the University of Texas Medical School at Houston have implemented a comprehensive nutritional assessment program to identify clinical and subclinical malnutrition and to implement aggressive, effective therapy. A multidisciplinary team approach to nutritional asse
