[A case of systemic lupus erythematosus associated with meningitis, myelitis, and bilateral optic neuritis].

A 16-year-old girl was admitted to our hospital in August 23, 1986, for headache, nausea and low grade fever. Marked increases in immunoglobulin indices were found in the cerebrospinal fluid. When she was 13, she was diagnosed as having SLE and lupus nephritis. On September 9, 1986, she complained of urinary retention, and pathological reflexes were elicited bilaterally. On September 13, she complained of a sudden loss of vision (count fingers) in the right eye which worsened to a visual acuity of light perception over the next 48 hours. A visual evoked response potentials (VEP) to flash stimu

[Intracapsular implantation of the Saturn-type intraocular lens during simultaneous cataract extraction and trabeculectomy].

The authors have developed a method for implantation of the Saturn-type intraocular lens (IOL), designed by Krasnov and Pivovarov, during a simultaneous cataract extraction with trabeculectomy. Such combined operations have been carried out in one of the eyes of 15 patients suffering from senile cataracts and open-angle glaucomas, the vision acuity of the other eye being at least 0.4. The patients have been followed up for 1 to 3 yrs postoperation. The suggested variant of surgery involves but little complications and yields good immediate and late hypotensive effect. Intracapsular implantatio

Retinal imaging by laser polarimetry and optical coherence tomography evidence of axonal degeneration in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning laser polarimetry with variable corneal compensation (GDx) are similar yet provide information on different aspects of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) structure (thickness values similar to histology for OCT vs birefringence of microtubules for GDx). OBJECTIVES: To compare the ability of OCT and GDx to distinguish eyes of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) from eyes of disease-free controls and thus identify RNFL abnormalities. We also sought to examine the capacity of these techniques to distinguish MS eyes from those without a

Penetrating keratoplasty in the mentally retarded.

Penetrating keratoplasty is infrequently performed in the mentally retarded due to the high risk of serious post-operative complications, in particular wound rupture and severe inflammation of the graft. Graft survival is hindered by the patient's tendency for eye rubbing and possibly self-inflicted injury. Adequate nursing support is essential to ensure strict compliance with post-operative treatment. A retrospective study of corneal graft outcomes in mentally retarded patients was undertaken to assess graft survival, visual rehabilitation, post-operative complications and the influence on so

Optical coherence tomography analysis of patients with untreated diabetic macular edema.

PURPOSE: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a major cause of vision loss. Diabetes patients with mild macular edema and good visual acuity are often observed carefully so that treatment can be instituted when central vision is threatened. Optimal frequency of monitoring of these patients is unknown. Our study aimed to gather more information to determine a safe interval for monitoring of patients with eyes that were not undergoing active treatment for DME and to correlate outcomes with clinical risk factors. METHODS: Study population: Ninety-seven eyes with optical coherence tomography (OCT) evi
