Double trouble: modelling the impact of low risk perception and high-risk sexual behaviour on chlamydia transmission.

Risk perception plays an important role in testing behaviour for sexually transmitted infections, but is rarely included in mathematical models exploring the impact of testing. We explored the impact of incorporating sexual behaviour (SB), risk perception (RP) and differential testing uptake in SB-RP groups on prevalence, using chlamydia as an example. We developed a pair model with a susceptible-infected-susceptible structure representing heterosexuals aged 16-26 years. The effect of testing on chlamydia prevalence was compared between a model with only SB (SB model) and a model with SB and R…

Functional Interplay Between the Putative Measures of Rostral and Caudal Efferent Regulation of Speech Perception in Noise.

Efferent modulation has been demonstrated to be very important for speech perception, especially in the presence of noise. We examined the functional relationship between two efferent systems: the rostral and caudal efferent pathways and their individual influences on speech perception in noise. Earlier studies have shown that these two efferent mechanisms were correlated with speech perception in noise. However, previously, these mechanisms were studied in isolation, and their functional relationship with each other was not investigated. We used a correlational design to study the relationshi…

Perception of changes in soft-tissue profile after Herbst appliance treatment of Class II Division 1 malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we sought to assess the perception of changes in soft-tissue profile after Herbst appliance treatment by comparing facial profile silhouettes before treatment, immediately after treatment, and 2 years after treatment, as examined by orthodontists, general dentists, and laypersons. METHODS: The sample comprised 21 patients (mean age, 9.5 ± 0.5 years), who were treated with the Herbst appliance for a mean period of 12 (±1.1) months. Three lateral cephalograms were obtained at different times: baseline, immediately after removal of the Herbst appliance, and 2 years a…

However, evidence for its possible contribution to psychoti … riential thinking, both controls and patients significantly reduced self-reported anomalous reality perception. However, participants in the induced abstract-analytical thinking condition increased anomalous experience, especially sensory experience from an unexplained source. Multigroup path analyses showed that involvement in abstract-analytical thinking d …

40th birthday of the Italian Mental Health Law 180 - perception and reputation abroad, and a personal suggestion.

How things are perceived from a distance may help better understand their nature. Perceptions at home are likely to shape perceptions abroad. The mutual cross-references between local and distant perspectives on the Italian Mental Health Law 180 may help understand the process which preceded and resulted in the reform. This editorial argues that Law 180 came about at a unique - enabling - time in history. It argues that the run-up to and passing of Law 180 constituted a great accomplishment by professionals, the wider public and politicians/administrators. This editorial goes on to argue that …

A mediational model of obesity related disordered eating: The roles of childhood emotional abuse and self-perception.

The extant literature indicates negative self-perceptions are a risk factor for disordered eating (DE) and DE is a risk factor for overweight and obesity. While childhood emotional abuse (EA) is often linked to DE and obesity, it is typically not included in comprehensive models of these health problems. Further investigation of interactions among EA, self-perception, and DE is needed to refine treatments for overweight, obesity, and DE. This study evaluated a model of DE and weight difficulties in which negative self-perception mediate the relationship between EA and DE, and DE predicts body …

Auditory Brainstem Implant Array Position Varies Widely Among Adult and Pediatric Patients and Is Associated With Perception.

OBJECTIVES: The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) provides sound awareness to patients who are ineligible for cochlear implantation. Auditory performance varies widely among similar ABI cohorts. We hypothesize that differences in electrode array position contribute to this variance. Herein, we classify ABI array position based on postoperative imaging and investigate the relationship between position and perception. DESIGN: Retrospective review of pediatric and adult ABI users with postoperative computed tomography. To standardize views across subjects, true axial reformatted series of scans w…

Effect of intralaryngeal muscle synkinesis on perception of voice handicap in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Intralaryngeal muscle synkinesis associated with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is thought to preserve thyroarytenoid-lateral cricoarytenoid muscle complex tone, resulting in a better voice despite the presence of vocal fold paralysis (VFP). This study compares voice handicap in patients with unilateral VFP (UVFP) with and without evidence of adductory synkinesis on laryngeal electromyography (LEMG). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of LEMG data and Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) scores of patients diagnosed with permanent UVFP. METHODS: LEMG was performed

The impaired subjective perception of verticality independent of peripheral vestibular function in dizzy elderly with orthostatic hypotension.

BACKGROUND: The elderly often complain of faintness, lightheadedness, dizziness, and unsteadiness, which may be associated with the orthostatic hypotension (OH), but most of them are subclinical. The pathogenic mechanism of subjective symptoms in the elderly with OH is controversial. AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the involvement of the irregularity of the vertical perception in the dizzy elderly with OH. METHODS: This study consisted of 403 patients seeking treatment for dizziness in our hospital. The neurotological examinations include the subjective visual vertical (SVV) test a…

Assimilation of virtual legs and perception of floor texture by complete paraplegic patients receiving artificial tactile feedback.

Spinal cord injuries disrupt bidirectional communication between the patient's brain and body. Here, we demonstrate a new approach for reproducing lower limb somatosensory feedback in paraplegics by remapping missing leg/foot tactile sensations onto the skin of patients' forearms. A portable haptic display was tested in eight patients in a setup where the lower limbs were simulated using immersive virtual reality (VR). For six out of eight patients, the haptic display induced the realistic illusion of walking on three different types of floor surfaces: beach sand, a paved street or grass. Addi

Opposing effects of glutamatergic and GABAergic pharmacological manipulations on a visual perception task with relevance to schizophrenia.

RATIONALE: Numerous psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases have been associated with differences in visual perception, and it has been proposed that the treatment of these differences may represent a novel means to treat disorders like schizophrenia. Unfortunately, few methods exist to study visual perception in pre-clinical species. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to adapt a task of visual integration by proximity with relevance to schizophrenia to a rodent touchscreen environment to determine the effects of glutamatergic and GABAergic compounds. In this way, we…

Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Reveals Auditory and Frontal Cortical Regions Involved with Speech Perception and Loudness Adaptation.

Considerable progress has been made in the treatment of hearing loss with auditory implants. However, there are still many implanted patients that experience hearing deficiencies, such as limited speech understanding or vanishing perception with continuous stimulation (i.e., abnormal loudness adaptation). The present study aims to identify specific patterns of cerebral cortex activity involved with such deficiencies. We performed O-15-water positron emission tomography (PET) in patients implanted with electrodes within the cochlea, brainstem, or midbrain to investigate the pattern of cortical …
