Of all pregnant women in the United States an average of 1.5% reported to have type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our review article will discuss and explore the relationship between pre-pregnancy diabetes and its adverse outcomes in mothers and neonates. Diabetes in pregnancy can cause a myriad of complications, many of which are related to microvascular changes, including diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy associated with preterm delivery, cesarean sections, and intrauterine growth restriction. Pregnant patients with diabetes also have an increased risk of pre-eclampsia, likely due to com

Background/Objectives: In Brazil, nearly universal access to prenatal care coexists with ongoing negative fetal and infant outcomes. This review explores how the adequacy of prenatal care affects maternal, fetal, and child health, and highlights recurring gaps in service delivery. Methods: A narrative review of Brazilian studies published between 2018 and 2024 was conducted through the Virtual Health Library and PubMed. The initial search (July 2024) was updated in February 2025, and two reviewers independently screened and extracted data, synthesizing clinical outcomes from the findings. Resu

BACKGROUND: The administration of antenatal corticosteroid is a standard treatment to reduce the rate of perinatal mortality and morbidity; however, there is limited evidence regarding the potential effects of betamethasone on the constriction of the ductus arteriosus (DA).
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of antenatal betamethasone on fetal cardiovascular and circulation status.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental observational (before-after) study was conducted on 32 singleton fetuses. The participants were healthy pregnant women with a diagnosis…

The emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led to the global COVID-19 pandemic, significantly impacting the health of pregnant women. Obstetric populations, already vulnerable, face increased morbidity and mortality related to COVID-19, aggravated by preexisting comorbidities. Recent studies have shed light on the potential correlation between COVID-19 and preeclampsia (PE), a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity worldwide, emphasizing the significance of exploring the relationship between these two conditions. Here, we review the pathoph

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are major contributors to maternal mortality in South Africa. Preventative strategies in low- and middle-income countries emphasise frequent antenatal visits, symptom identification, patient education and the prophylactic use of calcium and low-dose aspirin to prevent HDP for nurses because they are the frontline workers at antenatal clinics countrywide.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study where a self-administered questionnaire was conducted among nurses (midwives and professional nurses) employed at hospitals and clinics in Durban, South

INTRODUCTION: Twin pregnancies are associated with an increased risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Pregnancy complications related to twins, such as fetal growth restriction, and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), are associated with hemodynamic changes in the fetal heart. Two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D STE) is a tool to evaluate fetal cardiac function. This paper aims to review the literature regarding global longitudinal strain (rate) and peak systolic strain (rate) assessed with 2D STE in twin pregnancies. Feasibility, frame rate, and angle of the fetal

This study presented the management of neonatal arterial thrombosis secondary to hypernatremia and breech presentation trauma. In the first case, an 18-day-old male born at 41 weeks gestation presented with ischemic left foot and absent peripheral pulses in both legs. Abdominal duplex ultrasonography revealed extensive aortic thrombosis from the infrarenal level to the lower extremity trifurcation arteries. An embolectomy was planned. Heparin infusion and hyperbaric oxygen therapy was administered to minimize the amputation level following the embolectomy. After consultation with the relevant

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Adolescents and youth living with HIV (AYLHIV) have worse outcomes at all stages of the care cascade when compared with adults, yet adolescents and youth with unsuppressed viral load are typically excluded from phase 3 studies of novel HIV therapeutic agents and emerging strategies. Long-acting agents have the potential to radically change outcomes for young people struggling with adherence to daily oral HIV medications.
RECENT FINDINGS: 1.5 million children aged less than 15 years live with HIV and more than 100 000 acquire HIV perinatally every year. Adolescents and youth

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (HDP) comprise chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia/eclampsia, and preeclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension. HDP complicate up to 10% of pregnancies worldwide and carry significant risks of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the derangement and characteristics of brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (BAFMD) in women with HDP.
METHODS: The BAFMD of the right brachial artery of 80 women with HDP (pregnant HDP), 80 normotensive pregnant women (pregnant non-HDP), an

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia (PE) is a serious hypertensive pregnancy disorder and a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Despite the prevalence and complications, there are no approved therapeutics to relieve PE symptoms. Inflammation, oxidative stress, and angiogenic imbalance have been shown to contribute to the PE pathophysiology, though there is a lack of understanding in how best to target these pathways in PE. We recently demonstrated that the bioflavonoid luteolin is a potent inhibitor of the anti-angiogenic and pro-hypertensive soluble fms-like tyrosine kinas

During the severe acute respiratory distress virus coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, many women were infected during their pregnancies. The SARS-CoV-2-induced coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has an impact on maternal health and pregnancy outcomes; peripartum and perinatal morbidity and mortality are increased. Pregnancy is considered a risk factor for severe COVID-19 course. Additional risk factors during pregnancy are diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and obesity. Systemic inflammation can lead to severe metabolic dysregulation with ketoacidosis. The endocrine

Advances in perinatal and neonatal care have led to improved survival of preterm infants into adulthood. However, the shift in focus to long-term health in adults born preterm requires a clear understanding of the impact of prematurity on developing organ systems and the development of adult-oriented disease. A less well-recognized area of risk for surviving preterm infants is their cardiometabolic health. Epidemiologic evidence has linked preterm birth to the development of systemic hypertension, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart failure, and ischemic heart disease. Of more significa

Introduction: With a global pandemic like coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreading across borders, creating an extensive fear amongst all groups alike due to the increased morbidity and mortality, there is uncertainty in all patients affected. The government policy of quarantine of pregnant and postnatal women with COVID-19 in hospitals leads to ironic isolation and loneliness, mounting anxiety and fear of unknown outcomes. This study was undertaken to assess maternal anxiety in relation to COVID-19 and to observe factors influencing anxiety, drawing on anxiety scoring scales and a compar

Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), especially when complicated with pre-eclampsia (PE), could be a life-threatening complication of pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia is one of the leading causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality in women. Pre-eclampsia is mainly characterized by hypertension and kidney damage with proteinuria. Abnormal placentation and altered structure of the placental barrier are believed to participate in the pathogenesis of pregnancy-induced hypertension, leading to PE. In the current study, we aimed to analyze the immunohistochemical expression pattern of E-cadherin and p120

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-associated disease, which is the major cause of mortality on maternity and perinatal infants. It is hypothesized that PE is a consequence of the dysfunction of the trophoblast cells. Pleckstrin homology-like domain, family A, member 2 (PHLDA2) was shown to inhibit the proliferation, migration, and invasion of trophoblast cells in our previous studies. However, the mechanism by which PHLDA2 affects trophoblast cell function has not been clarified. In the current study, co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) with mass spectroscopy analysis was used to explore the protein

Background: small-for-gestational-age (SGA) newborns present a higher morbidity and mortality rate when compared to infants born appropriate for gestational age (AGA), as well as insufficient growth, with height far from their target and in some cases a low final height (< -2 SDs). Objective: the aim of this study was to determine when catch-up growth (CUG) in height occurs in these children, and which factors are associated with lack of CUG. Material and methods: this is a retrospective study of SGAs born between 2011 and 2015 in a secondary hospital. Anthropometric measurements were taken co

Domestic violence's most frequently reported outcomes are preterm delivery and low birthweight, both of which are the strongest correlates of mortality and morbidity. Several studies have shown that pregnant women with domestic violence during pregnancy were more likely to deliver low-birthweight and preterm neonates. However, there has been no consensus on associations between domestic violence and low-birthweight and preterm delivery. To examine the impact of domestic violence on birthweight stratified by preterm or full-term delivery, a population-based retrospective cohort study was conduc
