The use of laparostomy in damage control surgery and uncontrolled intra-abdominal infection has been well described. We examined 71 patients who required laparostomy to see if trends in management and outcome could be identified based on the underlying disease state. The underlying etiology included gastrointestinal sepsis (n = 25), pancreatitis (n = 21), or trauma (n = 25). Pancreatitis patients required more operations per patient (P < 0.05). Primary peritoneal carcinoma, like ovarian cancer, usually causes non-specific abdominal symptoms, and often presents at a late stage. We report a case of primary peritoneal carcinoma where the development of abdominal symptoms was preceded for 6 months by paraneoplastic palmar contractures. This case demonstrates the importance of recognising palmar contractures as a potential sign of neoplastic disease.

We report a 17-year-old boy with chondroblastic osteosarcoma initially found in left proximal tibia. He received surgical resection and chemotherapy. However, a lung metastasis was found 4 years later. Despite intensive chemotherapy, the metastatic osteosarcoma of lung continued to invade the ribs and later into retroperitoneum and liver. The metastatic pattern of chondroblastic osteosarcoma of tibia directly to the chest and then into the abdomen is unusual.
