Suicide trends among persons aged 10-24 years--United States, 1994-2012.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among persons aged 10-24 years in the United States and accounted for 5,178 deaths in this age group in 2012. Firearm, suffocation (including hanging), and poisoning (including drug overdose) are the three most common mechanisms of suicide in the United States. Previous reports have noted that trends in suicide rates vary by mechanism and by age group in the United States, with increasing rates of suffocation suicides among young persons. To test whether this increase is continuing and to determine whether it varies by demographic subgroups among pe

Associations between social cognition and inflammatory markers in eating disorders and borderline personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (EDs) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are severe psychiatric conditions characterized by emotional dysregulation and impairments in social cognition. Growing evidence suggests that inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways may contribute to their pathophysiology. The present study aimed to explore the association between social cognition performance and immune-inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in individuals with BPD, restrictive ED (EDR), and purging ED (EDP) vs healthy controls (HC), using a pathway-based psychoneuroimmunologica

Exploratory Graph Analysis Failed to Reproduce the Hypothesized Functional Zoning Framework in the OECD Survey on Social and Emotional Skills.

The OECD's first Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) in 2019 assessed 10- and 15-year-olds across ten cities, employing a framework of 15 skills organized into five dimensions aligned with the Big Five personality traits. While this adult-derived model offers a parsimonious structure for measuring social-emotional skills, its applicability to children and early adolescents across diverse cultural contexts remains largely untested. This study examined the structural validity of the SSES framework employing exploratory graph analysis (EGA)-a network psychometrics technique using skill f

Psychopathological profiles in offenders with antisocial personality disorder: a comparison of violent and sexual crimes.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines psychopathy and aggression profiles in offenders with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) using standardized forensic assessment tools. It hypothesizes that higher psychopathy scores (PCL-R) will be significantly associated with greater aggression, providing insights for forensic risk evaluation and management. METHOD: The study included incarcerated offenders evaluated at the Council of Forensic Medicine between 2014 and 2024 who were diagnosed with ASPD according to DSM-5 criteria. Participants voluntarily completed standardized assessments including the

More symptoms, less crime: distinguishing clinical severity from violence risk in a national follow-up study of adolescent forensic inpatients.

BACKGROUND: The predictive value of symptom severity on post-discharge criminal offending in forensic psychiatric settings remains unknown, potentially leading to prolonged institutionalization of stabilized patients under the rationale of public safety. Furthermore, outcomes of adolescent forensic psychiatric inpatient care are understudied. AIMS: To explore if clinical symptom severity predicts subsequent criminal offending, to investigate the role of severe disorders in future offending, and to quantify offence rates among former adolescent forensic inpatients compared to the general popul

A fatal case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy in the father-daughter dyad.

Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA), formerly known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, is a rare form of abuse where parents induce or fabricate symptoms in their child, exposing them to unnecessary and potentially harmful medical treatments. In over 90% of cases, the perpetrators are mothers. A father was put on trial for the murder of his three-month-old daughter and was eventually convicted of repeatedly inducing respiratory crises, ultimately causing her death. Investigations began after multiple visits to the Emergency Department for respiratory episodes reported by the father but

Offenders with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Clinical Case Series and Diagnostic Considerations in Forensic Psychiatry.

PURPOSE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasingly recognized in adulthood, including in forensic settings, where its diagnostic and medico-legal implications remain insufficiently defined. Current evidence does not support a simple association between ASD and offending; rather, offender presentations in autistic individuals appear heterogeneous and are likely shaped by the interaction between core autistic features, intellectual and adaptive functioning, comorbidity, developmental adversity, and contextual stressors. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This clinical-forensic case series describes

Associations between sensory changes and psychological problems after moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI) is frequently accompanied by persistent sensory changes that can substantially impair quality of life. Theory suggests that these changes may not occur in isolation but instead be closely intertwined with psychological difficulties (eg, anxiety). A better understanding of the interrelationships between sensory changes and psychological problems may help identify mechanisms underlying symptom persistence and inform rehabilitation efforts. METHODS: We conducted a psychometric network analysis on cross-sectional questionnaire data fro

Study on the Pathway Mechanism of Social Support and Quality of Life Between Self-Disclosure and Stigma Among Breast Cancer Patients During Recovery.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer comprehensive therapies often cause body image changes, triggering stigma that impairs mental health and quality of life. Existing studies lack an integrated model to reveal the underlying mechanisms between these variables. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 292 breast cancer patients selected via convenience sampling from 5 hospitals in Guangdong Province between March 2021 and March 2022. Clinical predictors of insomnia in borderline personality disorder: a polysomnographic and subjective examination.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and are associated with a poor prognosis and symptom severity. Research findings on sleep abnormalities in individuals with BPD have been inconsistent, with limited evidence linking subjective and objective measures. METHODS: We compared 44 women with BPD with 41 healthy controls. We examined differences (using ANCOVAs and ordinal logistic regression) and associations (using correlations) between objective sleep assessment (polysomnography) and subjective measures (Consensus Sleep Diary, Insomnia

The current clinical approach to feeding and eating disorders aimed to increase personalization of management.

Feeding and eating disorders (FEDs) are a heterogeneous grouping of disorders at the mind-body interface, with typical onset from childhood into emerging adulthood. They occur along a spectrum of disordered eating and compensatory weight management behaviors, and from low to high body weight. Psychiatric comorbidities are the norm. In contrast to other major psychiatric disorders, first-line treatments for FEDs are mainly psychological and/or nutrition-focused, with medications playing a minor adjunctive role. Patients, carers and clinicians all have identified personalization of treatment as

Identifying primary-care features associated with complex mental health difficulties.

AIM: The coded prevalence of complex mental health difficulties in electronic health records, such as personality disorder and dysthymia,is much lower than expected from population surveys. We aimed to identify features in primary care records that might be useful in promoting greater recognition of complex mental health difficulties. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We analysed Connected Bradford, an anonymised primary care database of approximately 1.15M citizens. We used multiple approaches to generate a large set of features representing multi-level collections of patient attributes across time and

Affective Instability: Impact of Fluctuating Emotions on Regulation and Psychological Well-Being.

Previous research has focused on understanding the occurrence of intense and fluctuating emotions and the ability to manage these emotions and affective states. These phenomena have been, respectively, labeled as affective instability and emotion regulation and have been studied among individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder (BD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous findings suggest that affective instability may be associated with poorer psychological well-being. The present study aims t

Trait impulsivity moderates rate of alcohol consumption in daily life.

INTRODUCTION: Rate of alcohol consumption, the speed with which people drink, has been linked to a range of outcomes, including alcohol use disorder symptoms and increased positive affect. However, minimal work has identified who is most likely to drink at elevated rates. Impulsivity is associated with increased attention to positive reinforcers specifically (e.g., positive affect). We therefore examined whether people higher in trait impulsivity engage in faster consumption during drinking episodes. METHODS: Participants were current drinkers (N = 113; 54 people with borderline personality d

Can I Leave the Past Behind? Associations between Childhood Abuse and Adult Psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Research consistently shows that abuse during childhood is related to adult psychopathology. Information regarding childhood abuse is frequently collected from either previous documentation or from participants' self-reports. OBJECTIVE: In the current study, we combined information on reports of childhood abuse from several informants (patients, treating clinicians, and independent interviewer), as well as diagnostic assessments of adult patients based on independent interviewer assessments based on structured diagnostic interviews (SCID) and clinician judgments, to better examine
