Complications of patients with bone tumors treated with carbon-fiber plates: an international multicenter study.

Carbon-fiber (CF) plates are a promising alternative to metal plates. However, reported experience in orthopaedic oncology remains limited. The aim of this study was to identify complications of patients with bone tumors treated with CF plates. Between February 2015 and May 2021, 13 centers retrospectively registered patients with bone tumors that were reconstructed using CF plates. Complications were identified, and timing and etiology of complications were noted. Similar complications were tabulated and classified based on mechanical, non-mechanical and paediatric complications. Mechanical c

Joint-preservation surgery for bone sarcoma in adolescents and young adults.

Bone sarcoma often occurs in childhood, as well as in adolescents and young adults (AYAs). AYAs differ from pediatric patients in that their bone is skeletally mature and the physis has almost disappeared with the completion of growth. Although AYAs spend less time outside, they often participate in sports activities, as well as driving, working, and raising a family, which are natural activities in daily living. Multidisciplinary approaches involving imaging, multi-agent chemotherapy, surgical procedures, and careful postoperative care has facilitated an increase in limb-sparing surgery for b

A Novel Method of Fibula Flap In Situ Distraction Osteogenesis Prior to Flap Transfer.

BACKGROUND: The fibula flap is the workhorse for mandibular reconstruction, but fibula bone width is not ideal to match mandibular height. In this study, in situ widening of the fibula with distraction osteogenesis before transfer is evaluated as a solution. The authors present a proof of concept of this technique with a patient series, including one patient who has undergone subsequent orthognathic surgery of the reconstructed mandible. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients undergoing the authors' technique was performed. A longitudinal fibula osteotomy was made in situ and distraction

Decannulation in Trisomy 21 patients undergoing laryngotracheal reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Down Syndrome (DS) patients are more susceptible to either congenital or acquired subglottic stenosis (SGS). This often creates a multilevel airway obstruction and can lead to tracheostomy dependence early in life. As a result, they may require Laryngotracheal Reconstruction (LTR) to achieve decannulation. The primary objective of this study was to assess decannulation rates, time to decannulation and potential barriers to decannulation in DS patients undergoing LTR. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review from 2008 to 2021 of 193 children who underwent LTR for treatmen

Analysis of the efficacy of the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap in reconstructive head and neck surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Although free flaps have been used predominantly in past decades for the soft tissue reconstruction of head and neck malignancies, Pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF) is still a reliable workhorse for patients with co-existing co-morbidities or low economic status where free flaps are not feasible. PATIENTS AND METHODS: It was a retrospective study done on 36 patients of head and neck malignancies over the period of 5 years in which PMMF was used as a method of reconstruction in our hospital. Patients were followed up for a period of one year and outcome of PMMF was evalua

Reconstruction of hypopharyngeal defects with anterolateral thigh free flap: A single-center retrospective analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Reconstruction of expanded hypopharyngeal defects following laryngo-hypopharyngectomy for surgical treatment of primary is still a challenge for head and neck surgeons. Tradiotionally, jejunal or radial forearm flaps are the common reconstructive choice. Recently, the anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flap has served for pharyngoesophageal reconstruction. The goal of this work is to describe a retrospective analysis about a five-year single-center experience in the reconstruction of post-operative hypopharyngeal defects with ALT free flap. METHODS: A single-center retrospective stu

Anatomical Study of Domain Rescue of Palatal Length in Patients With a Wide Cleft Palate: Buccal Flap Reconstruction in Primary Palatoplasty.

BACKGROUND: This study characterizes the potential loss of velar length in patients with a wide cleft and rescue of this loss of domain by local flap reconstruction, providing anatomic evidence in support of primary lengthening of the soft palate during palatoplasty. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all patients with a cleft palate at least 10mm in width, who underwent primary palatoplasty with a buccal flap prior to 18 months of age over a 2-year period. All patients underwent primary palatoplasty with horizontal transection of the nasal mucosa, which was performed after nasa

Customized and Navigated Primary Orbital Fracture Reconstruction: Computerized Operation Neuronavigated Surgery Orbital Recent Trauma (CONSORT) Protocol.

Combined orbital medial wall and floor fractures and large isolated orbital floor fractures commonly require surgical treatment due to the high probability of diplopia and enophthal-mos. Primary reconstruction of these orbital fractures requires a high-level surgeon with a great amount of technical surgical skill. The use of novel technology can greatly improve the accuracy of reconstruction and achieve satisfactory clinical outcomes. Hence, the authors aimed to present our findings and overall experience with respect to extensive floor and medial wall orbital fracture reconstruction according

Histological features of complete tracheal rings in congenital tracheal stenosis.

PURPOSE: Congenital tracheal stenosis is a disease in which complete tracheal cartilage rings (CTCR) cause airway narrowing. Although tracheal cartilage malformation has been suggested as a cause of CTCR, no histological studies have been performed. Here, we report a comparison of the tissues from CTCR and normal tracheal cartilage. METHODS: Thirty-one infants who underwent slide tracheoplasty at our institution from May 2016 to August 2019 were included. Tissues from ten autopsy cases without tracheal lesions were used as controls. The survey items were tracheal cartilage cell density, carti

Reconstruction strategies for intraoperative CSF leak in endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) is one of the preferred options for skull base pathologies. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is a significant complication of EES and neurosurgeons have proposed various reconstructive strategies to decrease this morbidity. We describe and compare the efficacy of these strategies. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for publications between 1990 and November 2019. We defined a reconstruction hierarchy of seven levels from inside to outside: fat graft, intracranial intradural layer (inlay), intracranial extradural layer
