Distinguishing Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients From General Surgery Emergency Patients With the CIAAD Scale: Development and Validation of a Prediction Model Based on 822 Cases in China.

Background: During the epidemic, surgeons cannot identify infectious acute abdomen patients with suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) immediately using the current widely applied methods, such as double nucleic acid detection. We aimed to develop and validate a prediction model, presented as a nomogram and scale, to identify infectious acute abdomen patients with suspected COVID-19 more effectively and efficiently. Methods: A total of 584 COVID-19 patients and 238 infectious acute abdomen patients were enrolled. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression an

Deep Natural Language Processing to Identify Symptom Documentation in Clinical Notes for Patients With Heart Failure Undergoing Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy.

CONTEXT: Clinicians lack reliable methods to predict which patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) will benefit from cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). Symptom burden may help to predict response, but this information is buried in free-text clinical notes. Natural language processing (NLP) may identify symptoms recorded in the electronic health record and thereby enable this information to inform clinical decisions about the appropriateness of CRT. OBJECTIVES: To develop, train, and test a deep NLP model that identifies documented symptoms in patients with CHF receiving CRT. METHO

Automated development of artificial neural networks for clinical purposes: Application for predicting the outcome of choledocholithiasis surgery.

Among various expert systems (ES), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has shown to be suitable for the diagnosis of concurrent common bile duct stones (CBDS) in patients undergoing elective cholecystectomy. However, their application in practice remains limited since the development of ANNs represents a slow process that requires additional expertize from potential users. The aim of this study was to propose an ES for automated development of ANNs and validate its performances on the problem of prediction of CBDS. Automated development of the ANN was achieved by applying the evolutionary assembli

Predictors of osteoporosis and vertebral fractures in patients presenting with moderate-to-severe chronic obstructive lung disease.

Bone mineral density (BMD) alone does not reliably predict osteoporotic fractures. The Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) was developed to estimate the risk of fracture in the general population. This study was designed to identify predictors of osteoporosis and vertebral fractures in patients presenting with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We studied 85 patients (mean age = 75 years; 92% men) with moderate to very severe COPD. Osteoporosis and vertebral fractures were diagnosed with dual energy X-ray absorptiometric scan and vertebral X-rays, respectively. Patient characterist

Quantifying Metabolic Syndrome Severity: Methodological Evolution, Clinical Validation, and Translational Perspectives.

Categorical criteria for diagnosing metabolic syndrome often fail to capture the continuous nature of metabolic risk and underlying patient heterogeneity. This narrative review evaluates the methodological evolution of quantitative severity assessment, focusing on the transition from conventional statistical scoring to advanced machine learning applications. Initial statistical models established the foundation for continuous risk evaluation by mathematically weighting core diagnostic components. Supervised machine learning approaches subsequently enhanced predictive precision by processing mu

A distinct four-value blood signature of pyrexia under combination therapy of malignant melanoma with dabrafenib and trametinib evidenced by an algorithm-defined pyrexia score.

Pyrexia is a frequent adverse event of BRAF/MEK-inhibitor combination therapy in patients with metastasized malignant melanoma (MM). The study's objective was to identify laboratory changes which might correlate with the appearance of pyrexia. Initially, data of 38 MM patients treated with dabrafenib plus trametinib, of which 14 patients developed pyrexia, were analysed retrospectively. Graphical visualization of time series of laboratory values suggested that a rise in C-reactive-protein, in parallel with a fall of leukocytes and thrombocytes, were indicative of pyrexia. Additionally, statist

Stacked Model-Based Classification of Parkinson's Disease Patients Using Imaging Biomarker Data.

Parkinson's disease (PSD) is a neurological disorder of the brain where nigrostriatal integrity functions lead to motor and non-motor-based symptoms. Doctors can assess the patient based on the patient's history and symptoms; however, the symptoms are similar in various neurodegenerative diseases, such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple system atrophy-parkinsonian type (MSA), essential tremor, and Parkinson's tremor. Thus, sometimes it is difficult to identify a patient's disease based on his or her symptoms. To address the issue, we have used neuroimaging biomarkers to analyze

Combining Rhythm Information between Heartbeats and BiLSTM-Treg Algorithm for Intelligent Beat Classification of Arrhythmia.

Arrhythmia is a cardiovascular disease that seriously affects human health. The identification and diagnosis of arrhythmia is an effective means of preventing most heart diseases. In this paper, a BiLSTM-Treg algorithm that integrates rhythm information is proposed to realize the automatic classification of arrhythmia. Firstly, the discrete wavelet transform is used to denoise the ECG signal, based on which we performed heartbeat segmentation and preserved the timing relationship between heartbeats. Then, different heartbeat segment lengths and the BiLSTM network model are used to conduct mult

An artificially intelligent (or algorithm-enhanced) electronic medical record in orofacial pain.

This review examines how a highly structured data collection system could be used to create data-driven diagnostic classification algorithms. Some preliminary data using this process is provided. The data collection system described is applicable to any clinical domain where the diagnoses being explored are based predominately on clinical history (subjective) and physical examination (objective) information. The system has been piloted and refined using patient encounters collected in a clinic specializing in Orofacial Pain treatment. In summary, whether you believe a branching hybrid check-bo

G6PD Deficiency in an HIV Clinic Setting in the Dominican Republic.

Because human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients receive prophylaxis with oxidative drugs, those with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency may experience hemolysis. However, G6PD deficiency has not been studied in the Dominican Republic, where many individuals have African ancestry. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of G6PD deficiency in Dominican HIV-infected patients and to attempt to develop a cost-effective algorithm for identifying such individuals. To this end, histories, chart reviews, and G6PD testing were performed for 238 consecutive HIV-infecte

A Risk-based Model Predictive Control Approach to Adaptive Interventions in Behavioral Health.

This paper examines how control engineering and risk management techniques can be applied in the field of behavioral health through their use in the design and implementation of adaptive behavioral interventions. Adaptive interventions are gaining increasing acceptance as a means to improve prevention and treatment of chronic, relapsing disorders, such as abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, mental illness, and obesity. A risk-based Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm is developed for a hypothetical intervention inspired by Fast Track, a real-life program whose long-term goal is th

Docking unbound proteins with MIAX: a novel algorithm for protein-protein soft docking.

We propose a new methodology for "soft'' docking unbound protein molecules (reported at the isolated state). The methodology is characterized by its simplicity and easiness of embedment in any rigid body docking process based on point complementarity. It is oriented to allow limited free but not unrealistic interpenetration of the side chains of protein surface amino acid residues. The central step to the technique is a filtering process similar to those in image processing. The methodology assists in deletion of atomic-scale details on the surface of the interacting monomers, leading to the e

Machine Learning and Post-Hoc Feature Attribution for Predicting Cardiac MRI Motion Artifacts: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Anxiety-induced motion artifacts frequently compromise image quality during non-sedated cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), leading to rescans and increased healthcare burdens. This retrospective cohort study hypothesized that combining multidimensional psychological and physiological indicators could accurately predict artifact occurrence. Baseline data from 514 adult patients, encompassing 15 clinical features, were systematically analyzed. Four machine learning algorithms were trained and evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The eXtreme Gra

Deep learning-based computational pathology: Technologies, clinical applications, and future directions.

The adoption of whole-slide imaging is establishing a new paradigm in digital pathology. However, the translation of artificial intelligence (AI) from research to clinical practice faces significant hurdles, largely due to a misalignment between algorithmic advances and the practical demands of pathological diagnosis and prognosis. In this review, we propose a dual-perspective framework to systematically bridge this gap by linking core clinical tasks with cutting-edge deep learning methodologies. We present a comprehensive overview of the field from 2020 to 2025, analyzing how architectures su
