In situ 3D bioprinting with bioconcrete bioink.

In-situ bioprinting is attractive for directly depositing the therapy bioink at the defective organs to repair them, especially for occupations such as soldiers, athletes, and drivers who can be injured in emergency. However, traditional bioink displays obvious limitations in its complex operation environments. Here, we design a bioconcrete bioink with electrosprayed cell-laden microgels as the aggregate and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) precursor solution as the cement. Promising printability is guaranteed with a wide temperature range benefiting from robust rheological properties of photocros…

Engineering of a Microscale Niche for Pancreatic Tumor Cells Using Bioactive Film Coatings Combined with 3D-Architectured Scaffolds.

Two-photon polymerization has recently emerged as a promising technique to fabricate scaffolds for three-dimensional (3D) cell culture and tissue engineering. Here, we combined 3D-printed microscale scaffolds fabricated using two-photon polymerization with a bioactive layer-by-layer film coating. This bioactive coating consists of hyaluronic acid and poly(l-lysine) of controlled stiffness, loaded with fibronectin and bone morphogenic proteins 2 and 4 (BMP2 and BMP4) as matrix-bound proteins. Planar films were prepared using a liquid handling robot directly in 96-well plates to perform high-con

Performance of a monolith biotrickling filter treating high concentrations of H2S from mimic biogas and elemental sulfur plugging control using pigging.

A novel biotrickling filter using a 3D-printed honeycomb-monolith as its filter bed has been proposed and studied in this work and a solution to bed-clogging problems using pigging was demonstrated. The inlet H2S concentration in the mimic biogas was controlled around 1000 ppmv and the empty bed gas residence time (EBRT) was 41 s corresponding to a loading rate of 127 g S-H2S m-3 h-1. The influence of different H2S/O2 ratios on the removal performance and fate of sulfur end-products was investigated. The results indicated that at a H2S/O2 molar ratio of 1:2, an average removal efficiency of 95

Advances in 3D-bioprinted implantable liver microtissue for liver failure treatment.

Liver failure represents a significant global health challenge, and orthotopic liver transplantation remains the only available clinical therapy for this disease. However, the severe shortage of donor organs has made the development of alternative therapies for liver function replacement an urgent unmet clinical need. Over the past decades, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering research have been dedicated to developing engineered synthetic tissues and organs for transplantation. As an advanced and prospective biofabrication technique, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting offers an innova…

Advancing Research on Rare Cancers Through 3D Bioprinting.

Rare cancers are a diverse group of malignancies with low incidence, posing significant challenges for research due to the scarcity of cases and the lack of well-established in vitro and in vivo models. In this letter, we describe how 3D bioprinting can address these challenges by enabling the construction of more accurate tumor models that capture the essential characteristics and heterogeneity of rare cancers. The technology allows for the creation of multicellular microenvironments, the incorporation of diverse extracellular matrix substrates, and the deployment of additional components lik…

Microalgae in 3D bioprinting and bone regeneration: Trends, applications, and future perspectives.

3D bioprinting has emerged as a powerful technology for bone tissue engineering, enabling the fabrication of complex, cell-laden structures with spatial precision. In recent years, microalgae have attracted growing attention in this field due to their unique photosynthetic ability, oxygen-generating capacity, and inherent bioactivities, which can enhance tissue regeneration and angiogenesis. This review systematically outlines the types of microalgae used in bone-related 3D bioprinting, their integration into bioinks and scaffolds, and the mechanisms through which they contribute to bone heali…

Radiofrequency and microwave 3D bioprinting of emulsion gel for dysphagia diets.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting of emulsion gels is expected to achieve a flexible design of dysphagia diets for individuals with difficulty in swallowing. In this study, the 3D bioprinting of emulsion gels have been achieved using radiofrequency (RF) and microwaves (MW). The textural properties were controlled using different RF and MW frequencies. The structure of an emulsion gel ink was composed of ovalbumin, xanthan gum, MgCl2, Tween 80, and canola oil, satisfying the dysphagia diet criteria. The RF treatment at 200 MHz effectively improved the hardness of the emulsion gel by forming th…

Multimodal additive manufacturing of biomimetic tympanic membrane replacements with near tissue-like acousto-mechanical and biological properties.

The three additive manufacturing techniques fused deposition modeling, gel plotting and melt electrowriting were combined to develop a mimicry of the tympanic membrane (TM) to tackle large TM perforations caused by chronic otitis media. The mimicry of the collagen fiber orientation of the TM was accompanied by a study of multiple funnel-shaped mimics of the TM morphology, resulting in mechanical and acoustic properties similar to those of the eardrum. For the different 3D printing techniques used, the process parameters were optimized to allow reasonable microfiber arrangements within the melt…

Laser-cutting: A novel alternative approach for point-of-care manufacturing of bespoke tablets.

A novel subtractive manufacturing method to produce bespoke tablets with immediate and extended drug release is presented. This is the first report on applying fusion laser cutting to produce bespoke furosemide solid dosage forms based on pharmaceutical-grade polymeric carriers. Cylindric tablets of different sizes were produced by controlling the two-dimensional design of circles of the corresponding diameter. Immediate and extended drug release patterns were achieved by modifying the composition of the polymeric matrix. Thermal analysis and XRD indicated that furosemide was present in an amo
