Valproate sodium enhances body weight gain in patients with childhood epilepsy: a pathogenic mechanisms and open-label clinical trial of behavior therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Excessive weight gain associated with valproate sodium (VPA) may predispose patients with epilepsy to other health problems such as insulin resistance. The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in body weight and several biochemical parameters in children receiving VPA treatment. The effects of behavior therapy for epileptic children with VPA-induced weight gain are discussed. METHODS: Fifteen patients newly diagnosed with epilepsy were included in the study. The following parameters were measured: body weight, body mass index (BMI), serum glucose, serum insulin, serum

Parents living with HIV and children's stress and delinquent behaviors in China.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aims to explore the association of parents living with HIV (PLHs) and their children's self-esteem, everyday stress, and delinquent behaviors. DESIGN: The study samples included 79 families with 79 PLHs and 79 children. METHODS: Multiple regression analysis was used on baseline data collected in 2009 from a pilot study in Anhui Province, China. RESULTS: The results indicated that children from a family with both parents infected with HIV or children from families having multiple children were more likely to report a higher level of everyday stress. Male PLHs have s

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor is critically involved in basal and fluoxetine-stimulated adult hippocampal cell proliferation and in anxiety, depression, and memory-related behaviors.

Intensive research is devoted to unravel the neurobiological mechanisms mediating adult hippocampal neurogenesis, its regulation by antidepressants, and its behavioral consequences. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is expressed in the CNS, where its function is unknown. Here, we show, for the first time, the relevance of MIF expression for adult hippocampal neurogenesis. We identify MIF expression in neurogenic cells (in stem cells, cells undergoing proliferation, and in newly proliferated cells undergoing maturation) in the subgranular zone of t

Refined food addiction: a classic substance use disorder.

Overeating in industrial societies is a significant problem, linked to an increasing incidence of overweight and obesity, and the resultant adverse health consequences. We advance the hypothesis that a possible explanation for overeating is that processed foods with high concentrations of sugar and other refined sweeteners, refined carbohydrates, fat, salt, and caffeine are addictive substances. Therefore, many people lose control over their ability to regulate their consumption of such foods. The loss of control over these foods could account for the global epidemic of obesity and other metab

Factors associated with the psychological and behavioral adjustment of siblings of youths with spina bifida.

The intensive health management activities associated with spina bifida (SB) often command a pervasive presence in the lives of families and may place some members at risk for psychosocial difficulties. However, research on the risk and protective factors associated with sibling adjustment is limited. Anchored upon a social-ecological theoretical framework, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the relationships between select individual, family, and peer factors and sibling adjustment. A convenience sample of 224 adolescent siblings and parents of youths with SB responded t

Chronic disease and health risk behaviors associated with intimate partner violence-18 U.S. states/territories, 2005.

PURPOSE: Few studies have examined the association between intimate partner violence (IPV) and health outcomes for both women and men. The current study examined this relationship for women and men as part of a large cross-sectional public-health survey that collected information on a range of health behaviors and health risks. METHODS: In 2005, over 70,000 respondents in 16 states and 2 territories were administered the first-ever IPV module within the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The BRFSS, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is an annual rand

Youth alcohol use and risky sexual behavior: evidence from underage drunk driving laws.

Recent research calls into question previous methods for estimating the relationship between alcohol use and risky sexual behavior among youths [Rashad, I., Kaestner, R., 2004. Teenage sex, drugs and alcohol use: problems identifying the cause of risky behaviors. Journal of Health Economics 23, 493-503]. This paper provides new evidence on this question by using reductions in heavy alcohol use among underage males induced by state adoption of very strict age-targeted "Zero Tolerance" drunk driving laws. I estimate reduced form models of the effects of Zero Tolerance laws on state gonorrhea rat

Disinhibited personality and sensitivity to alcohol reinforcement: independent correlates of drinking behavior in sons of alcoholics.

Thirty nonalcoholic young (18 to 30 years) males with extensive multigenerational family histories of male alcoholism and 29 age-matched, family history-negative controls completed a variety of trait personality questionnaires, participated in a competitive stress task (while sober and alcohol-intoxicated), and were assessed for self-report and laboratory drinking behavior. Low academic achievement, disinhibited personality (as measured by the P Scale of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire), and sensitivity to alcohol reinforcement were significant and powerful independent predictors of self

[Seven cases of pseudoseizure unnecessarily treated with AEDs].

An increasing number of pseudoseizures and/or behavioral abnormalities are being unnecessarily treated with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) for long periods, often producing adverse effects and even aggravating abnormal behaviors. Seven of the 77 new referrals (43 men, 34 women) to our epilepsy clinic within a single year (1992-1993) were misdiagnosed with epilepsy and had pseudoseizures or behavioral abnormalities alone. The initial episodes for which AEDs had been given were febrile convulsions during childhood in two patients, nonfebrile convulsions of uncertain nature in four patients, and lea

Type A and B subjects' self-reported cognitive/affective/behavioral responses to descriptions of potentially frustrating situations.

This study compared Type A and Type B individuals' self-reported thoughts and behavioral responses to descriptions of potentially frustrating situations. The Jenkins Activity Survey was first administered to 181 adults to assess their TYpe A tendencies. The Type A scores were then used in forming two groups of 40 extreme Type A's and 40 extreme Type B's. These 80 subjects were subsequently presented with written descriptions of 16 potentially frustrating situations included in the questionnaire "What Pushes Your Button?" and asked to provide two responses to each situation: what they might thi

[Correlations among disease perceptions, attitudes and self-care behaviors in patients with interstitial cystitis].

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is an enigmatic disease that currently remains incurable. Failure to adopt positive self-care behaviors can exacerbate recurrent clinical symptoms and significantly affect a patient's capacity to function normally in work, family and social setting. Proper disease perception can improve patient attitudes toward disease management and positively influence behavior. PURPOSE: This study investigated correlations between disease perceptions, attitudes and self-care behaviors in patients with interstitial cystitis. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional

Patterns of alcohol use and response to digital brief interventions in college students: a secondary analysis of a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Drinking among college students in India is rising, influenced by social and cultural shifts. This study aimed to classify drinking behaviors among underage students using Latent Class Analysis (LCA) and assess the effectiveness of digital screening and brief intervention (DSBI) and brief advice (DSBA) across identified classes. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a two-stage cluster randomized trial that screened 693 college students (age 18-22 yrs) with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). LCA was employed to identify latent classes in a main sample (N =

Racism and alcohol use and related problems among Asian American and Pacific Island adults: The role of negative emotions in responses to experiencing racism.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although Asian American and Pacific Island (AAPI) individuals are less likely to use alcohol than other racial/ethnic groups, health disparities regarding alcohol-related outcomes indicate a need to study factors relevant to the AAPI community that may be related to alcohol use and related problems. Experiences of racism are related to greater alcohol use and related problems, presumably due to alcohol use in an attempt to manage heightened negative affect due to experiencing racism. Yet, no known studies have tested whether negative affect specifically related to ra

Association of Internet addiction with psychiatric symptom levels and sleep disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive Internet use is defined as Internet addiction disorders (IAD), which can lead to psychological problems and sleep disorders. Although many studies on the correlation between Internet addiction, psychiatric symptom levels, and sleep disorders have been conducted in recent years, there is no meta-analysis to substantiate the connection between these variables. METHODS: We systematically searched databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library to collect relevant studies using keywords associated with Internet addiction, psychological problems

Associations between the burdens of comorbid sleep problems, central sensitization, and headache-related disability in patients with migraine.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances are common in migraine patients and affect quality of life. Central sensitization (CS) is likely to play a role in the increased severity and chronicity of migraine. We hypothesized that the number of comorbid sleep problems would affect headache-related disability through the effects of central sensitization (CS). METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study including 215 consecutive patients with migraine. Insomnia was defined as a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score greater than 5. Probable REM sleep behavior disorder (pRBD) was defined as an R

Online 8-week cognitive therapy for problem gamblers: The moderating effects of depression symptoms and perceived financial control.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Online interventions for problem gambling are increasingly popular, but not everyone benefits from them. We describe 12 years of real-world data from an online intervention for gambling problems and aim to find out the extent to which depression, alcohol use, and sense of financial control influence the effectiveness of the program. METHODS: We analyzed treatment effectiveness and moderators in the Finnish "Peli Poikki" program (2007-2018)-an 8-week cognitive behavioral therapy and follow-up program for problem gambling. Participants were Finnish-speaking adults over 18 y
