PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the effect of arytenoid shielding on local control and complications in the treatment of early stage glottic carcinomas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analysis concerns 71 patients treated with megavoltage photons for stages Tis, T1 and T2 glottic carcinomas. In 31 patients the entire larynx was treated at 2 Gy/day to full dose (group 1, mean field area 41.5 cm2) and in 40 patients a posterior block was placed after a median dose of 54 Gy to protect the arytenoid cartilage (group 2, mean field area 38 cm2). PURPOSE: Patients irradiated for Hodgkin's disease are fixed in an immobilization cradle to improve repositioning. In the early 1990s, we changed our cradle system from a "short" upper torso cradle to an extended near-total body cradle that also includes the lower torso and thighs. We report a case of locally advanced rectal cancer stage III disease, T3N2M0, with a pelvic kidney complicating adjuvant radiation therapy. Chromosomal aberrations were evaluated in cultures of peripheral lymphocytes from subjects working in diagnostic X-ray and nuclear medicine areas, exposed to electromagnetic ionizing radiation and particulate ionizing emissions, respectively. We have been investigating radiation-induced neoplastic transformants of C3H 10T1/2 mouse fibroblasts for evidence of heritable changes. C3H 10T1/2 cells were treated with 8 Gy X rays. PURPOSE: Radiation-induced lumbosacral plexopathy is a rare complication of pelvic irradiation.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We report four cases among 2,410 patients treated to the pelvis for carcinoma of the cervix and carcinoma of the endometrium. All patients received both external beam and intracavitary radiation. The total calculated dose to the lumbosacral plexus was on the order of 7300 cGy.

Chronic exposure of the South American opossum, Monodelphis domestica, to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) induced 154 primary tumours of the cornea in 152 eyes. LEC strain rats, which have been known to develop hereditarily spontaneous fulminant hepatitis 4 to 5 months after birth, were highly sensitive to whole-body X ray-irradiation as compared to WKAH strain rats. Radiation-induced acute bone-marrow death occurred at doses higher than 2.0 Gy in LEC rats, and at doses higher than 7.4 Gy in WKAH rats, respectively. The natural history and therapeutic results of 26 patients with stage I malignant lymphoma of Waldeyer's ring (ML-WR) were analyzed retrospectively. Complete response was achieved in all 26. Relapse occurred in 9 of 21 (43%) patients treated with radiation therapy (RT) alone, while no relapse was seen in those treated with a combination chemotherapy consisting of cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP therapy). Relapse occurred within 1 year in 8 of the 9 patients. Relapse-free survival in the patients treated with RT alone was considered suboptimal.

The outcome of 31 patients with severe radiation enteritis treated by total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was analyzed. Before initiation of parenteral nutrition, 18 of the patients had not had abdominal surgery, while 13 had either a resection or an intestinal bypass for radiation enteritis. Median follow-up was 2 1/2 years (range: 1 month to 12 years) from the time of initiation of parenteral nutrition. External irradiation of different head and neck cancers may involve parts of the ear. The vestibular function of 25 patients in which the inner ear was comprised in the irradiated volume was investigated by electronystagmography (ENG).
