OBJECTIVE: Orthokeratology is a process by which the corneal curvature is flattened by sequentially fitting rigid gas permeable contact lenses of decreasing central curvature. There has been a resurgence of interest with the recent introduction of reverse geometry lenses. Although promising results have been described in reducing the myopic refractive error, the use of these lenses can be associated with corneal problems, as reported in this case series.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with recurrent corneal erosion syndrome can suffer both psychologically and socially due to excessive pain. After the failure of conservative treatment, conventional surgical interventions, such as anterior stromal puncture have been suggested. The purpose of this study was to assess the morphological and functional results of minimally invasive excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy (e-PTK) for treatment of recurrent corneal erosion syndrome and in particular, to evaluate the cumulative recurrence rate.

Refraction was measured in eyes of cynomolgus (Macaca irus) monkeys, before and during continuous intravenous infusion of large doses of the carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors acetazolamide and ethoxzolamide. No changes of refraction were seen. Therefore, inhibition of CA in lens, cornea and retina does not appear to be the cause of the transient myopia and associated symptoms, occasionally observed in patients treated with CA inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: We describe a new technique of inferior off-center ablation with laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) to correct both hyperopia and presbyopia.
METHODS: This prospective clinical study was based on the empirical results obtained with LASIK in 16 hyperopic eyes of 8 patients. All patients had a centered ablation in one eye and an inferior decentered ablation in the other eye. A Schwind excimer laser was used and a planned inferior off-center ablation of 1 mm was performed. Maximum follow-up was 22 months (8 eyes).

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of large muscle recessions on visual acuity in albinos with nystagmus.
METHODS: This is a retrospective, unmasked, chart review of 12 patients with ocular or oculocutaneous albinism demonstrating nystagmus who underwent four horizontal rectus muscle retroequatorial recessions. Pre- and postoperative visual acuity were measured.

To evaluate the efficacy, predictability, and stability of myopic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), the authors completed a 1-year follow-up study on a consecutive series of 26 sighted eyes undergoing this procedure. The results of this follow-up are presented. We report the results, over a 20 year period up to 1989, of 201 penetrating keratoplasties in 198 eyes of 158 patients. The five year graft survival was 97%. A corrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better was attained by 91%. The mean spherical equivalent refraction on removal of sutures was -2.68 Ds and the mean cylindrical correction was -5.56 Ds. Twenty-eight patients (14 females and 14 males aged between four and 34 years) with myelomeningocele and Chiari malformations were examined neuro-ophthalmologically. To determine the influence of pregnancy on the retinas of insulin-dependent diabetics, we assessed 53 diabetic women by retinal photography every six weeks throughout pregnancy and for six months post partum. Thirty-nine nonpregnant insulin-dependent diabetics of childbearing age served as controls. Of the 39 controls, 18 (46.2%) had retinopathy. IMPORTANCE: Approximately 70% of crew members who complete long-duration missions to the International Space Station develop signs of optic disc edema, a hallmark finding of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome. The onset and magnitude of edema differ across individuals, and the reason for this variability remains unknown.
