A single-center, retrospective study of COVID-19 features in children: a descriptive investigation.

BACKGROUND: Compared to adults, there are relatively few studies on COVID-19 infection in children, and even less focusing on the unique features of COVID-19 in children in terms of laboratory findings, locations of computerized tomography (CT) lesions, and the role of CT in evaluating clinical recovery. The objective of this study is to report the results from patients at Wuhan Children's Hospital, located within the initial center of the outbreak. METHODS: Clinical, imaging, and laboratory data of 76 children were collected retrospectively and analyzed with the Fisher exact test and Cox reg

Short-term outcomes of mirogabalin in patients with peripheral neuropathic pain: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Mirogabalin, which is approved for the treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain in Japan, is a ligand for the α2δ subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels. Both pregabalin and mirogabalin act as nonselective ligands at the α2δ-1 and α2δ-2 subunits. Mirogabalin has a unique binding profile and long duration of action. Pregabalin has been reported to produce intolerable adverse effects in some patients. This study investigated outcomes associated with mirogabalin administration in patients with peripheral neuropathic pain who ceased treatment with pregabalin. METHODS: We retrospect

Fifteen years of heroin-assisted treatment in a Swiss prison-a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the current US opioid crisis and the compelling fact that a quarter to a third of all those addicted to heroin pass through its prisons and jails each year, the care of incarcerated opioid-using individuals (OUI) needs to be improved. AIMS: Little has been published on the effectiveness or outcomes of heroin-assisted treatment (HAT), a treatment option for severely dependent OUI delivered in a prison setting. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate such treatment since its implementation. The primary objective was to investigate whether heroin-assisted tr

Veterinary drug administration in German veal calves: An exploratory study on retrospective data.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to characterise the usage of antibiotic and non-antibiotic drugs with a withdrawal period in German veal calves in more detail. In Germany, the documentation of the usage of veterinary medicinal products in food producing animals is mandatory. In the German monitoring system antibiotic use in calves under the age of eight months is recorded irrespective of the production type and only some basic measures (50 % and 75 % percentiles of the entire distributions of the treatment frequencies) are published regularly. Within this study 57 farms were included

Sepsis is underreported in Swedish intensive care units: A retrospective observational multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a common indication for admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Since definitions vary across studies, comparisons of prevalence and outcomes have been challenging. We aimed to compare sepsis according to ICU discharge codes with sepsis according to Sepsis-3 criteria and to investigate the epidemiology of sepsis in the ICU. We hypothesized that sepsis using discharge codes is underreported. METHODS: Adult ICU admissions to four ICUs in Sweden between 2015 and 2017 were screened for sepsis according to the Sepsis-3 criteria. Medical records were reviewed and data extr

Incidence of adenocarcinoma bladder in patients with cystitis cystica et glandularis: A retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Cystitis cystica et glandularis (CCG) is a hyper proliferative condition, likely representing a local immune response to chronic inflammatory stimulus. It has been hypothesized as a potential precursor of adenocarcinoma; however, a definite association has not been demonstrated. We aimed to determine whether CCG is a precursor to malignancy and to study the correlation of its two histological variants: the typical and the intestinal metaplasia (IM) type CCG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, all the cases of CCG diagnosed and treated between January 2012 and De

Acute abdomen in pregnancy: a retrospective study of pregnant patients hospitalised for abdominal pain.

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal emergencies occur in pregnant women with the rate of 1:500635 pregnancies. Such conditions usually develop from full health and worsen rapidly. Symptoms are often similar to those in physiological pregnancy (abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation). The diagnostic process is thus difficult and both the mother and her child are at risk. Our aim was to evaluate the frequency of abdominal emergencies in the Department of Surgery, University Hospital in Pilsen and to consider their impact on pregnancy and on the newborn. METHODS: We acquired a set of patients by retrograde

LINAC radiosurgery for glomus jugulare tumors: retrospective - cohort study of 23 patients.

BACKGROUND: Glomus jugulare tumors (GJTs) are uncommon and locally disruptive tumors that usually arise within the jugular foramen of the temporal bone. Surgery was the treatment of choice up until recently. In the last decades, however, radiosurgery has surfaced as a promising alternative treatment by providing excellent tumor control with low risk of cranial nerve injuries. Our aim was to examine the results of radiosurgery specifically, linear accelerator stereotactic radiosurgery (LINAC SRS) for GJT treatment. We hypothesized that radiosurgery will reduce the size of the tumor and improve
