Different Doses of Dexmedetomidine Reduce Postoperative Sleep Disturbance Incidence in Patients under General Anesthesia by Elevating Serum Neurotransmitter Levels.

Postoperative sleep disturbance is a common issue that affects recovery in patients undergoing general anesthesia. Dexmedetomidine (Dex) has a potential role in improving postoperative sleep quality. We evaluated the effects of different doses of Dex on postoperative sleep disturbance and serum neurotransmitters in patients undergoing radical gastrectomy under general anesthesia. Patients were assigned to the control, NS, and Dex (Dex-L/M/H) groups based on different treatment doses [0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 μg/(kg · h)]. The Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and ELISA kits were used to assess sleep distur

The time sensitive and dose-responsive association between parental corporal punishment and sleep disturbances in preschoolers: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: To examine whether parental corporal punishment is associated with increased risk of concurrent and later sleep disturbances among preschoolers, and whether the association is time-sensitive or dose-responsive. METHODS: This 3-year prospective cohort study used data from the Shanghai Children's Health, Education and Lifestyle Evaluation, Preschool(SCHEDULE-P). Participants were newly enrolled preschoolers in November 2016(wave 1) and followed up in April 2018(wave 2) and April 2019(wave 3). Parents reported the children's corporal punishment experiences and sleep disturbances at e

Distinct trajectories of neuropsychiatric symptoms in the 12 months following traumatic brain injury (TBI): a TRACK-TBI study.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and often resolve within 3 months post-injury. However, the degree to which individual patients follow this course is unknown. We characterized trajectories of neuropsychiatric symptoms over 12 months post-TBI. We hypothesized that a substantial proportion of individuals would display trajectories distinct from the group-average course, with some exhibiting less favorable courses. METHODS: Participants were level 1 trauma center patients with TBI (n = 1943), orthopedic trauma controls (n = 257), and non-injure

The efficacy of heart rate variability biofeedback training on sleep disorders and impact of fibromyalgia: Results of a phase II randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMs) is a chronic, musculoskeletal pain disorder characterized by sleep disturbances, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) aiming to improve self-regulation and strengthen the parasympathetic nervous system has been shown to be effective in several pain syndromes, but its efficacy in FMs has not been adequately investigated. This Phase II trial aimed to assess the feasibility and preliminary measurement of the improvement induced by HRV-BF in FMs. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with FMs were recruited. Patients were ra

TRPV1 is a risk factor for sleep disturbance in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease: a case control study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a chronic high-morbidity disease with a bidirectional relationship with sleep disturbance (SD) that may occur via the transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 receptor (TRPV1) in the oesophageal mucosa. Yet the related mechanism was still unclear, the aim of this study is to investigate whether TRPV1 is associated with the presence of SD in GORD patients. METHODS: A case-control study was performed. After the screening, A total of 88 subjects were assigned to GORD without sleep disturbance (GORD + NOSD, n = 28), GORD comorbid s

Sleep problems in pain patients entering tertiary pain care: the role of pain-related anxiety, medication use, self-reported diseases, and sleep disorders.

Chronic pain and sleep problems frequently co-occur. Pain itself disturbs sleep, but other factors may also contribute to sleep problems in pain patients. This cross-sectional study of 473 patients (69.9% female, mean age 47 years) entering tertiary pain management compared normally sleeping pain patients with those having recurring sleep problems to determine the relationship between pain and sleep. Groups were compared for pain and pain aetiology, pain-related anxiety, childhood adversities, use of sleep and pain medications, self-reported diseases, and sleep disorders. Furthermore, the asso

Peduncular hallucinosis after debulking of a third ventricular pilocytic astrocytoma: Case report and review of the literature.

Peduncular hallucinosis is a rare clinical syndrome manifesting as complex visual hallucinations and sleep-wake dysregulation after injury to deep neural structures, most commonly the midbrain and diencephalon. Initially reported after ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, an increasing range of pathologies and procedures have been described as causative of peduncular hallucinosis. We present a novel case of peduncular hallucinosis following debulking of a third ventricular pilocytic astrocytoma as well as a review of the existing literature.

Adverse effects of Z-drugs for sleep disturbance in people living with dementia: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is common in dementia and often treated with Z-drugs (zopiclone, zaleplon, and zolpidem). While some observational studies suggest that Z-drugs are associated with adverse events such as falls and fracture risks in older people, this has not been studied in dementia. METHODS: We used data from 27,090 patients diagnosed with dementia between January 2000 and March 2016 from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink linked to Hospital Episodes Statistics data in England. We compared adverse events for 3532 patients newly prescribed Z-drugs by time-varying dosage to (
