Agricultural management can substantially reduce soil biodiversity, potentially impairing key ecosystem processes. Understanding the capacity of soil biota to recover after severe disturbance is therefore essential for evaluating soil resilience. Soil-dwelling mite communities are known to respond sensitively to environmental change. We investigated the recovery of soil mite communities in a newly planted grassland using half-open field mesocosms. Grass mixtures were cultivated over three consecutive eight-month periods in chernozem and sandy soils. Within each system, mite assemblages in mini…

We conducted a nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) addition experiment in Qianjiangyuan National Park in 2015, to investigate the response of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms and denitrifying microorganisms. There were four treatments, including N addition (N), P addition (P), NP, and control (CK). Soil samples were collected in April (wet season) and November (dry season) of 2021. The abundance of amoA gene of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (i.e., ammonia-oxidizing archaea, AOA; ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, AOB; comammox) and denitrifying microbial genes (i.e., nirS, nirK, and nosZ) were determi…

Altitude influences biodiversity and physiochemical soil attributes in terrestrial ecosystems. It is of immense importance to know the patterns of how interactions among climatic and edaphic factors influence plant and microbial diversity in various ecosystems, particularly along the gradients. We hypothesize that altitudinal variation determines the distribution of plant and microbial species as well as their interactions. To test the hypothesis, different sites with variable altitudes were selected. Analyses of edaphic factors revealed significant (p < 0.001) effects of the altitude. Soil am…

Widespread soil resistance can seriously endanger sustainable food production and soil health. Conservation tillage is a promising practice for improving soil structure and health. However, the impact of long-term no-tillage on the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in agricultural soils remains unexplored. Based on the long-term (>11 yr) tillage experimental fields that include both conservation tillage practices [no tillage (ZT)] and conventional tillage practices [plough tillage (PT)], we investigated the accumulation trend of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in farmland soils under …

Soil macroinvertebrates as ecosystem engineers play significant, but largely ignored, roles in affecting mercury (Hg) cycle by altering soil physical-chemical properties. Ant is likely expanded into boreal mires with climate warming, however, its impacts on Hg cycle remained poorly understood. We compared total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) contents in soils from antmounds (Lasius flavus) and the nearby ambient in a boreal mire in Northeast China. The present work seeks to unravel factors that controlling MeHg levels in case of ant appearance or absence. The average THg was 179 µg/kg in th…

Heavy-metal contamination is widespread in agricultural soils worldwide, especially paddy soils contaminated by Cd. Amendment-induced immobilization of heavy metals is an attractive and effective technique, provided that cost-effective materials are used. This field experiment compared three alkaline passivators (attapulgite, processed oyster shell powder, and mixed soil conditioner) at a rate of 2.25 t ha-1 for their effectiveness in decreasing Cd bioavailability in soils and accumulation in rice plants in a paddy field contaminated by Cd (0.38 Cd mg kg-1). The utilization of attapulgite and …

The plants Salix viminalis L. (common osier) and Thlaspi caerulescens J. Presl & C. Presl have been studied often because of their high potential to extract heavy metals from soils. The soil properties favoring this phytoextraction are not yet fully known. In this study we compared three frequently used single-extracting agents (NaNO3, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid [DTPA], and ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid [EDTA]) with a sequential extraction procedure to describe changes in the different Cd, Cu, and Zn pools in the rhizosphere of S. viminalis and T. caerulescens grown on calcareous an…

Invasive plants are species introduced outside their natural range and often cause ecological or economic harm. By modifying litter quality, root architecture, and soil chemistry, invasive plants can alter many soil processes, including nutrient cycling and edaphic activity. The main aim of our study was to provide the first assessment in Poland of the ecological impact of Spiraea tomentosa L. invasion on the abundance, diversity, and species richness of soil Mesotigmata (Gamasida; Gamasina and Uropodnia) mite communities in wet meadow ecosystems, thereby offering novel insights into the below…

Rice cadmium (Cd) contamination is a serious threat to global food security and human health. Plant-associated microbiomes are known to affect Cd accumulation in plants. However, the response of the rice microbiome to Cd contamination and its role in modulating grain Cd accumulation remain poorly understood. In the present study, the responses of the rhizospheric fungi (RF) community and seed endophytic fungi (SEF) community to the soil physiochemical properties of rice from moderately (MC) and severely (SC1 and SC2) Cd-contaminated paddies were investigated. Moreover, the effects of soil phys…

The rise of plasticulture as mulching material in farming systems has raised concerns about microplastics (MPs) in the agricultural landscape. MPs are emerging pollutants in croplands and water systems with significant ecological risks, particularly over the long term. In the soil systems, MPs polymer type, thinness, shape, and size induces numerous effects on soil aggregates, dissolved organic carbon (C), rapidly oxidized organic C, microbial biomass C, microbial biomass nitrogen (N), microbial immobilization, degradation of organic matter, N cycling, and production of greenhouse gas emission…

BACKGROUND: Fluazaindolizine is a novel sulfonamide nematicide that is currently under commercialization in various countries. Four trials (two in tomato, two in zucchini) were carried out over two growing seasons in a root-knot nematode (RKN; Meloidogyne incognita)-infested plastic house to test the effects of a single application of fluazaindolizine at 1000 and 2000 g ha-1 , on RKN, the resident nematode community and to estimate any side effects on the soil food web and soil ecological functions. The composition of the nematode community was evaluated at three sampling times, pre-treatment …

Biochar is a carbon (C) rich product of thermochemical conversion of organic material that is used as a soil amendment due to its resistance to decomposition and its influence on nutrient dynamics; however, individual studies on biochar effects on phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) have proven inconsistent. Herein, we performed a meta-analysis of 124 published studies to evaluate the influence of biochar on available P, microbial biomass P (MBP), and inorganic N (NO3--N and NH4+-N) in global agricultural ecosystems. Overall, the results showed that biochar applications significantly increased sur…

Fungal pathogens are a vital component of microbial communities and can substantially reduce plant productivity. In grasslands, pathogens and their host plants frequently coexist with large grazing herbivores. However, it remains unclear whether and how grazing alters pathogen transmission and prevalence, particularly when integrating soil and foliar pathogens. Here, we conducted an 8-year field experiment in alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau to examine how soil pathogens and foliar diseases respond to grazing intensity, and to assess the relationship between them. Our results s…

Soil health assessment is increasingly used to support sustainable land management and agronomic decision-making, but generic indicator lists and universal scoring systems may be inadequate for highly reactive volcanic soils. This critical methodological review proposes an integrated methodological framework for volcanic island agroecosystems that explicitly separates analytical measurement from interpretation. The framework links assessment objectives and site context to fit-for-purpose analytical levels and classifies evidence as method-matched thresholds, local or reference benchmarks, rela…

Laboratory and field measurements were conducted to examine dry deposition of SO2 onto Chinese loess surfaces using native soil sampled in the loess plateau, China. The field tests were employed in Beijing and Lanzhou, China, by directly measuring the dry deposition of SO2 on soil, which uses soil put on a collector as an SO2 passive sampling medium. In the laboratory, a high rate of uptake to SO2 deposition for Chinese soil surfaces due to the highly alkalinity was found. The uptake of SO2 deposition was dependent on the pH soil and relative humidity. Furthermore, we evaluated some factors th…

Lime is widely applied as a soil amendment to reduce the grain cadmium (Cd) content in rice production. However, the effectiveness of liming on grain Cd reduction is inconsistent and often cannot meet the safety requirements established for rice production. To identify the factors causing the effectiveness of liming to vary, we collected data from peer-viewed articles regarding lime application in paddy soils that were published during the last ten years. The average Cd reduction rates in rice grains after liming were -44% across all the studies considered, which could be broken down into -48%…

The concentrations and flux of CO2, (222)Radon (Rn), and gaseous elemental mercury (Hg) in soil gas were investigated based on the field measurements in June 2010 at ten sites along the seismic rupture zones produced by the May 12, 2008, Wenchuan M s 8.0 earthquake in order to assess the environmental impact of degassing of CO2, Rn and Hg. Soil gas concentrations of 344 sampling points were obtained. Seventy measurements of CO2, Rn and Hg flux by the static accumulation chamber method were performed. The results of risk assessment of CO2, Rn and Hg concentration in soil gas showed that (1) the…
