OBJECTIVES: The authors report identical twins presenting similar lesions of localized lumbar osteochondrosis, which were worse in the one twin that practiced strenuous sports activities.
CONCLUSIONS: These observations suggest, at least in some of these patients, a basic role for genetic factors in the occurrence of the disease and an influence of mechanical strain on its severity.

PURPOSE: 141 patients with chordoma and chondrosarcoma of the base of skull and cervical spine were treated with proton and photon irradiation between 1980 and 1989. The local disease was controlled in 111 of these patients. A 22-year-old man suffered two noncontiguous burst fractures of the thoracic spine after minor motor vehicular trauma. He was diagnosed with pathologic spinal burst fracture associated with osteogenesis imperfecta Sillence Type 1A. The diagnosis was based on the relatively minor nature of the trauma, clinical characteristics, roentgenograms, and detailed family history. Osteogenesis imperfecta, although rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of severe burst fractures of the spine.

A report on the use of sublaminar wiring in the fusions of 34 patients with cervical spine injuries is given. No neurologic deficits were incurred in the use of this technique. There were no wire failures nor clinically significant complications. When compared with other forms of instrumentation to achieve similar results, the use of sublaminar wire is the most cost-effective.

Eighty-eight children under the age of 12 years with occult spinal dysraphism were operated on at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital from 1979 to 1989. There were 56 lumbosacral lipomas, 18 dermal sinuses and cysts, 7 isolated thickened filum terminales and 7 diastematomyelias. We examined the rates of postoperative complications and mortality, as recorded in a hospital discharge registry for the State of Washington for the years 1986 through 1988, for patients who had had an operation on the lumbar spine. The pineal organ of the spined rat is located deeply near the third ventricle. The organ shows a compact pattern of organization with pinealocytes and astrocytes arranged in cords and rosettes. Numerous concretions positive to chrome alum hematoxylin technic are visualized in the adjacent tissue near the pineal organ and in the vicinity of the veins which drain the blood of the organ. In the present work we discuss the probable origin of these concretions.

Vertebral column allografts, with their intervertebral discs, were implanted into thoracic spine defects (T7-T9) in 11 dogs in an attempt to re-establish spinal stability and preserve spinal biomechanics.
