A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a sucralfate mouthwash in preventing and alleviating oral mucositis induced by 5-fluorouracil (5FU). A total of 81 patients with colorectal cancer were enrolled. The study aimed to assess oral conditions other than caries and gingival inflammation present in the mouth of children from birth to 5 years old attending a Community Dental Program. Data were collected through the examination of all dental records, who attended the clinic from November 1997 until November 1999. A total of 1042 records were examined. The results showed that 97.7% of the patients had no lesions present in the mouth during the visits to the clinic, while 2.3% who presented did have lesions. An increasing number of anaerobic bloodstream infections in neutropenic cancer patients have been reported in the last decade. The type of anaerobes isolated from most of these patients suggests an oral source of infection. We describe a case of anaerobic bacteremia in a neutropenic patient with oral mucositis that highlights the importance of considering these organisms when selecting empiric prophylactic or therapeutic antimicrobial regimens, especially in the setting of periodontal disease or oral mucositis.

About one-third of patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment suffer oral mucositis, an inflammatory-like change of the oral mucosa. Severe pseudomembranous/ulcerative mucositis can lead to secondary infection of lesions, sepsis and even cessation of treatment. Cancrum oris is predominantly seen in children in underdeveloped countries where widespread malnutrition, dehydration and epidemic infections are present. In the western world, it is sometimes found in immunosuppressed adults with predisposing conditions such as leukaemia and infection associated with malnutrition. Early diagnosis and an intensive therapeutic approach are the key to a favourable prognosis of noma-like necro-ulcerative lesions. The prognosis is significantly improved if the predisposing condition can be removed. Two cases are presented and the treatment is discussed.

Twenty-three patients with advanced breast cancer were treated with the combination of mitoxantrone and doxorubicin. This review presents the results of the clinical use of human leukocyte interferon (HLI) in certain diseases with viral etiology. Viral infections with manifestations in the eye, skin, and/or mucous membranes and in the respiratory system were treated with HLI by local application. HLI was incorporated into ointment, oil suspension, powder, dilution for inhalation, and dilution for subcutaneous and subconjunctival injections. The treatment in some of the diseases yielded statistical results that were highly significant in favor of interferon.

Acyclovir is a new antiviral agent which is highly active against herpesviruses in vitro and in laboratory animals. Twenty-three cancer patients with cutaneous and/or systemic herpes zoster or herpes simplex infections were treated with parenteral acyclovir.
